Daughter of Shanghai (1937)
Smuggling asians to America for slave labor. It's big on gumption because the makers gambled on a "good eye". There is a jolt of celebration in seeing ourselves being portrayed in a prohibitive era. The film is incomplete, scarcely budgeted and cold in character development. It's not its fault. What blesses it, is Anna May Wong's illumination and a supporting cast that kept it burning. The characters were typed to be like they were. 13-May-2020
