Kenya's Judges Uphold Laws That Criminalize Gay Sex

Kenya's High Court has chosen to uphold colonial-era laws that criminalize gay sex, dashing the hopes of activists who believed the judges would overturn sections of the penal code as unconstitutional and inspire a sea change across the continent.

Three judges said Friday that the laws in question did not target the LGBTQ community. They were not convinced that people's basic rights had been violated, they said.

"We are not persuaded by the petitioners that the offenses against them are overboard," one of the judges said, according local media.

The case stems from to a petition filed in 2016 by activist Eric Gitari, with the support of organizations serving LGBTQ Kenyans. They argued that two sections of Kenya's penal code violated people's rights: Article 162 penalizes "carnal knowledge ... against the order of nature" with up to 14 years in prison, and Article 165 castigates "indecent practices between males" with the possibility of five years' imprisonment.

Trump administration announces rollback of health care regulations protecting LGBTQ people

The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) announced Friday that it is proposing a rule that would change a regulation under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that expanded anti-discrimination protections to transgender individuals.

The new regulation would change the 2016 rule that banned discrimination -- on the basis of sex and against trangender people -- by health care providers that receive federal funding.

In a release announcing the proposed change, HHS pointed to a Texas judge's December 2016 injunction that kept the Obama-era rule from being implemented. U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor sided with the state of Texas and other plaintiffs who argued that the Obama rule would force health care providers and insurers to enable transgender people to be treated and get coverage for gender transitions and abortions, despite their religious beliefs or against their medical judgment.

Catholic Church Orders School to Cover Pride Mural, Calling It 'Obscene'

A Catholic priest in Hackensack, N.J., ordered a charter school that leases the school grounds from his church to cover up a Pride mural in the school cafeteria, calling it “obscene” because it included an homage to Keith Haring’s interlocking male symbols. And the 16-year-old student at the Bergen Arts and Science Charter School in nearby Garfield who painted the mural took to Twitter to express her frustration.

“So ... my school’s owned by a Catholic Church and they want me to take down my Keith Haring mural that supports the LGBT community,” wrote the student (who did not want her name published), according to the North Jersey Record. “They think it’s inappropriate and wrong for a school setting. I’m heartbroken and I really never thought this could actually happen. Please help.”

Antigay former Congressman Aaron Schock busted trying to pick up a guy in West Hollywood

Totally-not-gay-at-all former Republican Congressman Aaron Schock was snapped poolside at the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood by a gay tourist visiting from New York.

The loathed closet case was accompanied by an attractive speedo-clad young gay man who was on Scruff while they lounged by the pool. Later he was spotted chatting up and ogling another young man.

Schock, who made a splash in the nation’s capital with his clothing choices, Instagram photos, and interior decorating choices, resigned after being accused of illegally using campaign funds to finance his over-the-top lifestyle.

Schock was a reliably anti-gay vote for Republicans, despite the parade of young men who visited his DC apartment, and his outing by journalist Itay Hod in 2014. Hod claimed he had walked in on his male roommate and Schock showering together.

Two men arrested after 18 year old falls from condo after alleged three-way

A doctor and his male friend have been arrested after an 18-year-old man fell to his death after an alleged three-way.

Police apprehended the pair after their guest fell from a balcony at the doctor’s 20th floor condo in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday (18 May).

A police source at Thong Lor police station told The Nation that the two suspects appeared to be under the influence of crystal methamphetamine.

What happened?

Thong Lor precinct officers received the report of the victim’s death at 3.30pm on Saturday.

Police authorities examined the building’s CCTV recordings. They reportedly found the victim entered the condo block with two older men, both in their 30s, and went up to the 20th floor with them.

One of the men alleged the teen became intoxicated and fell from the balcony. Locals found him on the street wearing only a G-string.

Chick-fil-A Says Its Anti-LGBTQ+ Donations Are a “Higher Calling”

We all feel a higher calling sometimes. Maybe it’s to be a teacher. Maybe it’s to leave your six-figure job and be a full-time drag queen. Or maybe, if you’re the CEO of Chick-fil-A, it’s a calling to donate to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations.

In an interview with Business Insider, Chick-fil-A’s vice president of corporate social responsibility and executive director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation Rodney Bullard said that the company felt a “higher calling” to donate its money to anti-LGBTQ+ organizations.

Colorado police officer who pulled gun on black man picking up trash quits force

A white Colorado police officer caught on video pulling a gun on a black man who was picking up trash outside his home has resigned, officials said Thursday.

Boulder Police Officer John Smyly quit the police force after an investigation found he violated department policy when he drew his gun and attempted to detain 26-year-old Zayd Atkinson in March, according to officials and a police department internal affairs report.

"While the finding likely would have resulted in suspension or possibly termination, Officer Smyly resigned prior to the conclusion of the disciplinary process," a statement released by the City of Boulder on Thursday reads.

A police internal affairs report obtained by ABC News shows Smyly's decision to attempt to detain Atkinson "was not supported by reasonable suspicion that Mr. Atkinson was committing, had committed, or was about to commit a crime."

Kicked out, spat on and abused, new UK shelter helps LGBT+ homeless

LONDON, May 15 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Apart from being spat on and urinated on when he slept rough in London for over a year, 52-year-old Chabahn had to contend with another daily threat: being abused and attacked for his sexuality.

Chabahn, who is gay but kept it hidden on the streets, said living with HIV was an additional burden that some mainstream shelters did not have the capacity to support him with.

"When it comes to being LGBT, the amount of discrimination on the street is rather high. There is no safety, you have to fend for yourself," said Chabahn, who declined to give his full name.

"You have to become a very good actor and you have to be someone that you are not."

Chick-fil-A is about to get thrown off another college campus for being antigay

California Polytechnic State University’s faculty voted overwhelmingly to boot Chick-fil-A from campus.

The Academic Senate is the faculty’s governing body and represents 1300 faculty members at Cal Poly. Last Tuesday, the Academic Senate voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution calling on the school to cut ties with Chick-fil-A, citing the corporation’s donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations.

The university’s “values statement includes language that identifies LGBTQ as a classification of individuals that we want to embrace in our diversity and inclusion model,” said Thomas Gutierrez, the vice chair of the Academic Senate who introduced the resolution.

Homophobes Attack Congressional Black Caucus Over Equality Act

A right-wing group aims to spark outrage among black voters over an impending vote on the Equality Act.

Organizers for the Gone 2 Far Movement released an open letter through Christian Newswire attacking leadership from the Congressional Black Caucus.

The bizarre rant, signed by failed Congressional candidate Stephen Broden and right-wing radio host Randy Short, suggests the “Gay Equality Act” will set back minority rights.

The letter singles out Rep. Karen Bass, CBC chair, and other caucus members for refusing to “defend the real purpose of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as a scam to make 'Gay the New Black' wherein pedophiles, sodomites of all stripes, and persons of debased fetish needs are accorded protected class status akin to Blacks and women.”

The letter compares a vote for the Equality Act to the biblical story of disciple Judas Iscariot betraying Jesus Christ, though its unclear how many pieces of silver were exchanged or who will be crucified should the legislation pass.

Eight Arrested for Hacking LGBTQ Activists to Death

Eight members of a radical group with ties to al Qaeda have been charged with the murder of two LGBTQ activists in Bangladesh, several media outlets reported today.

Xulhaz Mannan, founder and publisher of Bangadesh’s first gay magazine, Roopbaan, and actor Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy were hacked to death at Mannan’s home in Dhaka, the nation’s capital and largest city, in April 2016. Ansar al Islam, the regional arm of al Qaeda, claimed credit for the attack. Its members gained access to his home by pretending they were delivering a package.

Watch this woman suddenly demean & spit on a gay man as he tries to ride the subway

A bystander on the Jubilee line of the London Underground caught a homophobic attack on film as one rider used anti-gay slurs and spit on another passenger.

The video of the apparently intoxicated woman, originally reported by the Daily Mail, was provided by an unnamed onlooker who said that the attack was unprovoked..

The short clip shows the woman shouting at a passenger while several other riders look on.

At the beginning of the clip, she tells the man, “because you’re gay I’m gonna be like, ‘nah, he’s gay, just let him go?’ No! Because you’re gay, even more, I’m going to violate you.”

Most Jamaicans want to keep same-sex activity illegal

New research has showed most Jamaicans want to still keep the ban on gay sex.

LGBTI organisation, the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG), commissioned the research.

It found between seven and 30% of the population identified as LGBTI. The research also found that 97% of people had very little understanding of trans people and trans issues.

‘Over the last couple of years, we have seen some improvement in the situation where LGBT people are concerned. I think there is respect and tolerance for the community, but we are still a very far way from where we need to go,’ J-Flag’s executive director, Jaevion Nelson told a Gleaner forum.

Nelson said bullying and discrimination was still a huge issue for LGBTI people. But he felt heartened by findings that 68% of employers and 88% of politicians would report violence against LGBTIs. But only 34% of the general public would do so.
