Church that thinks homosexuality is ‘destructive’ stays open during coronavirus because it’s a ‘divine institution’

The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland has announced that it is “not of the view” that services need to stop to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

This statement was issued two days ago, in the wake of UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s March 16 briefing that said everyone must avoid both “mass gatherings” and “pubs, clubs, theatres and other such social venues”.

The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland said: “Although many have interpreted UK government advice and remarks [about coronavirus] as meaning that all services in church buildings should cease, and have stopped meeting, the Church Interests Committee is not of that view.”

Yes, really.

Christian group opposes coronavirus vaccine research because it used aborted fetal tissue

The Trump administration’s decision to ban scientific research that uses human fetal cells has not only had a major impact on a potential cure for HIV, now it’s hampering the search for a vaccine for COVID-19.

Evangelical Christian activists, who overwhelmingly support Donald Trump and oppose abortion, pushed the administration to ban the research. Now one group is attacking a potential vaccine for the novel coronavirus and claiming further research would be “morally” irresponsible.

“It is deplorable that anyone would want to exploit the remains of aborted babies for financial profit especially when so many people will refuse to use those products because of their deeply held religious, moral, and pro-life convictions?” Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of Children of God for Life, asked.

In 2018, a scientist who was supposed to supply mice that have been modified with human fetal tissue for an HIV study emailed researchers that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) “has directed me to discontinue procuring fetal tissue.”

“This effectively stops all of our research to discover a cure for HIV,” he wrote.

Jerry Falwell Jr.'s Christian University Welcoming Students Back to Campus Amid COVID-19

Liberty University, a private evangelical Christian university in Virginia, is welcoming students back to campus this week despite a little something known as COVID-19.

"I was on a conference call with other college presidents and representatives from private colleges, and we listened to what other schools were doing," president Jerry Falwell Jr. said in a statement shared to the school's site this week. "Many were throwing their hands up and saying they would just close and others were going to extend their breaks. At that time, we were on Spring Break, so we had time to work on it."

This process of choosing to "work on it" ultimately resulted in the decision to "get [students] back as soon as we can, the ones who want to come back."

A report from the Richmond Times-Dispatch noted that between a few hundred to more than 5,000 students were projected to be living in Liberty dorms as classes resumed this week. The majority of those classes have moved to online formats. Staff and faculty, however, are said to be coming to work in their usual capacity.

An anti-LGBTQ cardinal calls for Catholics to go to church despite coronavirus

You have to hand it to Cardinal Raymond Burke – if nothing else, he’s consistent. He used to let HIV wreak havoc on people. Now he wants coronavirus to do the same.

Burke has been one of the fiercest anti-LGBTQ prelates in the Catholic Church. He has called homosexuality an “ailment” and told parents that they should not allow their children to meet same-sex couples. Burke has also been a leader in decrying the use of condoms to prevent HIV. Of course, the Vatican’s refusal to acknowledge condoms can save lives no doubt contributed to the death toll from AIDS.

Given his condom opposition, you might think that Burke simply wanted to consign LGBTQ people to death. But no, he’s an equal opportunity grim reaper. He wants to do the same for pious Catholics.

In a message to his followers this weekend, Burke says people should keep going to church, despite the calls from public health authorities in Italy to avoid groups.

“Just as we are able to purchase food and medicine, while taking care not to spread the coronavirus in the process, so also [sic] we must be able to pray in our churches and chapels, receive the Sacraments, and engage in acts of public prayer and devotion, so that we know God’s closeness to us and remain close to Him, fittingly calling upon His help,” Burke writes.

Hobby Lobby CEO tells employees to come to work because his wife heard words from God

David Green, the billionaire CEO of Hobby Lobby, has determined that his employees – 43,000-plus people – shall continue showing up to work despite the upheaval caused by the coronavirus and social distancing orders. He asserts that they all will be fine because his wife, Barbara, received a message from God that they interpret as much.

Green describes how Barbara had a divine encounter that should qualm any concern for their family – and Hobby Lobby. “In her quiet prayer time this past week, the Lord put on Barbara’s heart three profound words to remind us that He’s in control. Guide, Guard, and Groom.”

Anti-LGBTQ Hate Groups Are Surging in the U.S.

The fastest growing number of known hate groups in the U.S. are focused on opposing LGBTQ rights, according to a report released Wednesday.

Last year there was a massive 43 percent increase in the number of organizations dedicated to opposing LGBTQ equality, the advocacy group Southern Poverty Law Center found in its yearly hate group index released on Wednesday. There were 70 anti-LGBTQ hate groups operating in 2019, as opposed to just 49 for the two consecutive years prior.

These battles are not merely being fought in the courts and in Congress. Many LGBTQ people are fighting to stay alive as homophobia and transphobia spread throughout the nation. Brooks said the uptick in hate groups correlates with a general rise in targeted attacks against the members of the LGBTQ community: A 2019 report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigations found that hate crimes against LGBTQ people had increased six percent over the past year.

A Louisiana pastor defies a state order and holds a church service with hundreds of people

On Tuesday night, just before the police arrived, Pastor Tony Spell stood in the pulpit of his Louisiana church and delivered a message to hundreds of worshipers before him and fellow believers around the world.

"I just want to encourage the religious world tonight, Amen!," Spell said in a sing-song voice, building to the crest of his sermon.

"Keep going to church! Keep on worshiping God! ... The church is a hospital for the sick! It's a place of healing for the brokenhearted!"

In holding services for so many followers at his Life Tabernacle Church in Baton Rouge, Spell defied an emergency order by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards banning public or private gatherings with more than 50 people to stop the spread of Covid-19.

"I feel the Covid-19 scare is politically motivated," Spell told CNN. He estimated his church hosted about 300 people for Tuesday's service.

‘Demonic spirit:’ Miami pastor rejects coronavirus warning

The pastor of a megachurch in South Florida warned his parishioners Sunday that fears of exposure to COVID-19 was a “demonic spirit,” and he encouraged his parishioners to show up to worship and not heed warnings from officials to avoid crowded spaces.

“Do you believe God would bring his people to his house to be contagious with the virus? Of course not,” said pastor Guillermo Maldonado, who goes by the term of “apostle,” at a service on Sunday morning at the King Jesus International Ministry in Kendall.

“This service is usually packed. So now they’re home in a cave afraid of the virus, that you want to transmit the virus,” Maldonado said to a venue that appeared half empty, as some churchgoers left seats between them. “If we die, we die for Christ. If we live, we live for Christ, so what do you lose?”

Margaret Court’s Church Reckons “The Blood Of Jesus” Will Protect Them From Coronavirus

This week in ‘Good Ideas’, sub-category ‘What Could Possibly Go Wrong?’, Margaret Court and her congregation have declared that they are safe from the coronavirus pandemic because the blood of Jesus will protect them.

The Victory Life Church released a statement to followers yesterday, saying that daily prayers and additional hand sanitiser are the only measures they’ll take to combat the rapidly-spreading disease.

Franklin Graham is suing an event venue for refusing to let him spread anti-LGBTQ rhetoric

After a Glasgow venue canceled an event hosted by Franklin Graham, the notoriously anti-LGBTQ preacher has started legal proceedings to sue for “religious discrimination.” The minister regularly bashes LGBTQ people on social media and from the pulpit.

Graham’s claim of discrimination comes after he has spent years defending anti-LGBTQ bakery owners’ rights to turn away LGBTQ couples. Graham has repeatedly praised the business owners for standing up for their private beliefs.

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) is claiming the venue, the SSE Hydro, is being discriminatory against Christians by refusing to give the pastor a platform to spread anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. Graham’s May 30th event was canceled after the venue’s primary shareholder, the Glasgow City Council, voiced strong concerns about hosting Graham because it was likely hate speech and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric would be used at the event.

Town burns effigy of kissing gay couple holding a child as part of carnival “celebration”

Residents of the small Croatian town of Imotski cheered and danced on Sunday while burning an effigy of a gay couple holding a child.

The violent display occurred during a town carnival, while a massive crowd looked on. In a video, many children can be seen watching as the adults around them applaud and play celebratory music.

The doll in the couple’s arms, placed there to represent a child, was adorned with the face of Nenad Stazic, a left-wing, Social Democratic Party member and a member of the Croatian parliament.

Sidewalk Preachers Say They Want to 'Take a Sword' to Gays

In a new video posted to YouTube, preachers from a religious sect have expressed a desire to put a sword to queer people.

Captured on the streets of Dalston in East London, the video was posted on a YouTube channel for The Church of Yahawashi. The organization is an extremist sect of Black Hebrew Israelites. In the video, the preachers say that their main channel was recently deactivated. They then went on to threaten LGBTQ+ people.

“There’s a lot of stupid people here,” the main preacher in the footage says, referring to Dalston. “Because we’ve just come out of the — I don’t know if it’s a pub or a slash restaurant. We had two faggots in there that we’ve had to keep eyes on because certain brothers, most of the brothers, no actually all of the brothers, we don’t like faggots.” Brothers surrounding him chime in with their agreement.

DC Priest Found Guilty of Sexually Abusing Girls in Church

The Catholic priest accused of sexually abusing two children of his Washington, D.C., parish has been found guilty.

Urbano Vazquez was convicted Thursday on four felony counts of child sexual abuse.

Vazquez groped a 9-year-old girl and 13-year-old girl in 2016, two years after he was ordained as a priest in the Capuchin Franciscan religious order.

Indianapolis Catholic School threatened to expel a gay student for supporting LGBTQ rights

Indianapolis Archbishop Charles Thompson, who ordered the mass firing of any teachers at the diocese’s schools, also had no problem allowing school administrators to threaten a gay student with expulsion if he didn’t stop speaking out for social justice.

The archdiocese has admitted it instructed all schools under its umbrella to immediately enforce all employment contracts – effectively a blanket order to fire any LGBTQ staff members. Over 70 schools in central Indiana are under the archdiocese’s administration.

“To effectively bear witness to Christ, whether they teach religion or not, all ministers in their professional and private lives must convey and be supportive of Catholic Church teaching,” the archdiocese said in a statement sent last week.

New Jersey mayor calls LGBTQ rights movement 'an affront to almighty God'

A New Jersey mayor called the LGBTQ rights movement "an affront to almighty God" at a town council meeting and warned that people who support "unrighteous laws" will be held accountable.

Barnegat Township Mayor Alfonso Cirulli, a former assistant principal, began Tuesday by condemning a state law that requires LGBTQ-inclusive material be taught in public school. He said the law "crossed over the line into absurdity" and politicians "have no right to promote the LGBT agenda."
