A study examined the death certificates of LGBTQ teen suicide victims. This is what they found.

LGBTQ youth who die by suicide are more likely to have been bullied, according to a new study published in JAMA Pediatrics.

LGBTQ youth are both more likely to be bullied and more likely to report suicidal thoughts and behaviors than cisgender, heterosexual youth. A team of researchers set out to determine if the two high rates are related.

The researchers examined death records for teens from 2003 to 2017, examining both the coroner’s or medical examiner’s report and police reports about the suicides. Since the records don’t always say how a decedent identified, the researchers looked for keywords describing how their families saw them, if they had a same-sex boyfriend or girlfriend, or if they were taking steps toward a transition.

Overall, they counted around 3% of the nearly 10,000 suicide records they had access to as LGBTQ. The researchers note that this is probably an undercount – there may have been LGBTQ youth whose death certificates and police reports didn’t mention their gender identity or sexual orientation in any way.

California Authorities Bring Suit Against 'Criminal Minds' Team for "Unchecked" Sexual Harassment

California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing wants to make a stand against sexual harassment in Hollywood. This past week, the agency took the bold step of filing suit against the various studios behind CBS' Criminal Minds as well as the executive producers of the series, which had its final episode in February.

The complaint filed in Los Angeles Superior Court discusses alleged sexual touching by Gregory St. Johns, who acted as a director of photography on the show. He's been the subject of court action already, but what makes this particular legal action so extraordinary is that California authorities have decided to go after The Walt Disney Company, ABC Signature Studios, CBS Studios and various individuals for what happened.

"With the aid of defendants, St. Johns created an unchecked intimidating, hostile, and offensive work environment on the set of Criminal Minds," states the complaint. "Protected by the executive production team — including showrunner Erica Messer, executive producer Harry Bring, executive producer John Breen Frazier, director Glenn Kershaw, and unit production manager Stacey Beneville — St. Johns continued his unlawful conduct for years. Defendants’ executive team not only had actual and constructive knowledge of St. Johns’ abusive conduct, they condoned it. No necessary steps to prevent sex-based harassment and discrimination were taken over the years, nor were appropriate corrective actions. Instead, the executives fired anyone who resisted or who tacitly evaded St. Johns’ advances or abuse."

Furious mob descends on woman who didn't wear a mask in a grocery store: ‘Get the fuck out of here!’

A viral video shows the moment an angry mob of New York grocery shoppers descended on an unmasked woman and drove her out of the store.

In the 20-second video, a crowd is shown shouting profanities as it targeted a female shopper who was not wearing a face mask inside a Staten Island grocery store.

'Not a mask in sight': thousands flock to Yellowstone as park reopens

Yellowstone, America’s oldest national park, and the nearby Grand Teton national park are the most recent to have partially reopened with the support of the Trump administration.

“I hope everybody is listening,” Donald Trump announced earlier in May. “The parks are opening, and rapidly, actually.”

While many have celebrated the reopening of the revered landscapes, others have raised health concerns about large, possibly maskless, groups of out-of-state visitors arriving and potentially skirting social distancing guidelines.

“We checked the webcam at Old Faithful at about 3.30pm yesterday,” said Kristin Brengel, the senior vice-president of government affairs at the National Parks Conservation Association. “Not much physical distancing happening and not a single mask in sight.”

97-year-old gay war veteran robbed and assaulted after helping attacker

On Monday (18 May), Rupert Starr – known to his friends as ‘Twink’ – was out for a walk on Neil Avenue in Columbus’ Victorian Village when a stranger approached him and asked for money.

According to Sergeant James Fuqua from the Columbus Division of Police, Starr – in an act of kindness – “decided to give this man a dollar to help this person during this crisis. He felt it would be appropriate to help him.”

Religious exemptions are gutting civil rights protections, advocacy groups warn

The Trump administration's expansion of religious exemptions is undermining civil rights protections and codifying discrimination against marginalized groups — particularly LGBTQ people — according to a report released Monday by three research and advocacy groups.

Using a combination of new rules, legal interventions and newly created divisions, the departments of Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Labor and State have all taken steps to advance "religious liberty," often at the expense of LGBTQ rights, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for American Progress and the Movement Advancement Project argue in their report.

The proposed rules — from the departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Labor, Housing and Urban Development, Veterans Affairs, Homeland Security, Agriculture and Education, along with the U.S. Agency for International Development — would undo several Obama-era regulations, including those that require federally funded religious organizations to inform beneficiaries about certain rights.

For example, if a homeless LGBTQ teen sought help from a faith-based provider and the provider was not accepting of the teen's sexual orientation or gender identity, the provider would no longer have to inform the teen under the new rule about alternative providers that may be more accepting.

"These rules would be harmful to LGBTQ people, women, religious minorities and others during the best of times, but they're particularly unconscionable during a public health crisis when even more people than usual are relying on social services," said Rachel Laser, president of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, which was not involved with Monday's report.

KKK Hoods Are Apparently the New COVID-19 Fashion Statement

Police in Colorado are seeking the public’s help to identify a man who went grocery shopping while wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood this weekend, though a similar case in San Diego recently ended with the police throwing up their hands and going, “This is America.”

Some white people have used their privilege to respond to the current COVID-19 pandemic by refusing to follow public health orders to wear masks and not go out to get bad haircuts.

Her Landlord Asked To Spend The Night With Her After She Lost Her Job And Couldn’t Afford Rent

When Gail Savage’s landlord messaged asking her if she would “stay all night” with him, she assumed he’d texted the wrong number.

“I was like, He probably meant to send that to his girlfriend,” Savage, 29, told BuzzFeed News.

A single mom to 2-year-old son Salem, Savage lost her job working as a bartender at a popular Indianapolis cocktail bar and her gigs working as a burlesque performer when the state shutdown occurred on March 16. She’d let her landlord know and they’d been texting about how she was waiting for the federal stimulus check to arrive to pay her April rent, when he suddenly inquired if she could get a ride and “stay all night” with him.

“I don’t know if you meant to send that to me,” she replied.

“I did,” he wrote back, in text messages seen by BuzzFeed News.

Catholic bishops are calling for the US federal government to crack down on porn, claiming it causes “pain” and “ongoing harm”.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a letter US attorney general William Barr on April 30, calling on the Trump administration to “confront the ongoing harms wrought by the pornography industry”, especially as use of porn sites has spiked during the coronavirus pandemic.

In the letter, the bishops wrote: “The current pandemic is exacting a heavy and widespread emotional, social, and financial toll in our communities.

“In the face of the pandemic, the Church expresses her solidarity with all who are struggling or alone.”

One in three gay men feel unsafe at home during coronavirus

Almost a third of gay and bisexual men report feeling vulnerable at home during the new coronavirus pandemic, with Brazilians particularly concerned, a global survey found on Tuesday, highlighting its wider mental health impacts.

According to research conducted by the U.S.-based gay social network Hornet for the Thomson Reuters Foundation, 30% of almost 3,500 respondents, which included transgender men, said they felt physically or emotionally unsafe in their own homes.

"Think of how it feels to be 21 years old and living with a family that is unsupportive and constantly haranguing you about marrying a woman," said Alex Garner, senior health innovation strategist at Hornet.

Ice cream parlor shuts down just 1 day after reopening — because the public harassed employees

A Massachusetts ice cream parlor was forced to close its doors just one day after reopening amid the COVID-19 crisis.

WFXT-TV reported that Mark Lawrence's Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour in Mashpee, Massachusetts, made the decision to close its doors Friday after customers reportedly harassed and disrespected the store's young employees.

The store had opened for just one day after the state determined that ice cream parlors could open with certain restrictions in place.

Lawrence said that he shared news of the opening on Facebook and asked customers to call ahead to place their pickup-only orders one hour in advance. He said that many people disregarded the directive and simply showed up.

When a crowd began to form at the ice cream parlor, Lawrence said that many of the customers began to harass the teenagers working at the dessert store.
