NYC Closing Out Its Bloodiest Year in Nearly a Decade as Killings Spike Amid Pandemic, Unrest

Heralded as the safest big city in America in recent years, New York City is closing out its bloodiest year in nearly a decade, grappling with a surge in homicides and a pandemic authorities say has helped fuel violence.

The city had recorded 447 killings as of Tuesday, a 41% increase over last year and the largest number since 2011. The number of people shot has more than doubled last year’s total, nearing a 14-year high.

Among the victims: a 1-year-old boy sitting in his stroller at a summer cookout; a 53-year-old teacher walking his dog; and a 43-year-old mother looking out the window of her child’s third-floor bedroom. All three were killed by stray bullets.

Court: Parents of child who killed himself can sue educators

The parents of an 8-year-old student who killed himself after being persistently bullied can move forward with a lawsuit against the Cincinnati school district that alleges wrongful death and other charges, a federal appeals panel ruled Tuesday.

The lawsuit's allegations also charge school officials with intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress and failure to report child abuse. The lawsuit says Taye was bullied at his elementary school starting in first grade, with the bullying escalating in his third grade year.

Other students punched and kicked him in assaults and on Jan. 24, 2017, knocked him unconscious by throwing him against a bathroom wall, the parents say in the lawsuit.

He stayed home sick the next day, returned to school Jan. 26 and was bullied again in the bathroom by students who took his water bottle and tried to flush it down the toilet, his parents say. He killed himself that evening in his bedroom.

Allegations Of Abuse Within The Convent Walls

Religious orders are supposed to provide spiritual guidance to those who join. But some of the women who entered Sisters Minor of Mary Immaculate (SMMI) say they faced physical and emotional abuse.

Patricia Budd, one of the former nuns of SMMI, first entered in 1995 in hopes of connecting with her Catholicism. It was at her first retreat where she met the order’s U.S. delegate, Sister Theresa Kovacs.

“It was a lot of hugs. There was a lot of encouragement,” Budd told HuffPost. “They would listen to you, and you felt really important, and you felt like you’re valued.” But soon after she joined, Budd and the other nuns realized things were not as they seemed.

“I witnessed other girls just being yelled at on a constant basis by Theresa Kovacs,” said Rose, who joined SMMI in 1995. (Three interviewees asked to only be identified by their first names.) According to Rose, a sister named Georgiana often got the brunt of Kovacs’ anger.

“It would be a torrent of the nastiest stuff you could ever say to a human being, she would say to me,” said Georgiana. “It was meant to keep people in line.”

The nuns faced strict rules. They weren’t allowed to speak to each other. They weren’t allowed to go for walks outside the convent doors.

“Basically your food is pretty much less and less,” she said. “And so, that’s pretty much like what a cult is — and break you down. That’s the whole thing. Always to break you down.”

One of the most mystifying gifts my mother laid on me this year is for me to stop pretending to be black and just be white. She's never seen me as anything but, so it is so. Racism doesn't apply to me because she's always seen me as white. LOL. It was said in an advisory tone to offset future guilt. Head explosion. If I went outside right now and declared I was white they would shoot me. I'm not black because my hair don't kink, she says. (2 blunts.) My nephews and nieces are black because their fathers and mothers are really black. There are no black people in Puerto Rico. They're Indian. Body collapse. 25-Dec-2020

Connie Chung Says Bryant Gumbel Treated Her Like She “Was Invisible”

In a Q&A taken from that conversation and published on the magazine’s website on Monday, Goldman asks the reporter if Gumble suffered from “bigshot-itis.” Chung replied, “I would say so. I’d be sitting beside him, but I was invisible, and we would see him at those same celebrity golf tournaments [as Donald Trump.] And oftentimes I was invisible to him as well.”

California Gay Couple’s Xmas Decorations Torn, Smeared With Feces

“They literally ripped them out of the ground, and wiped their asses with them, and carefully laid them at the base of our Pride Flag... I thought things might get stolen, but never in a million years did I think this would happen. I'm completely in shock,” he said.

Turns Out, Hillsong Megachurch Has Allegedly Been Full of 'Inappropriate Sexual Relationships' for Years!

Last month, news broke that Carl Lentz, one-time “spiritual confidant” to celebrities including Justin Bieber and head pastor at Hillsong megachurch, was “released” from his job due to unspecified “moral failures.” Soon afterward, it was revealed that Lentz cheated on his wife, having had an affair with Brooklyn-based fashion designer Ranin Karim (and potentially, many others). As of last week, it appeared like his redemption arc was beginning to unfold, having reportedly entered treatment for anxiety, depression, and “pastoral burnout.” Except, of course, new information about a seedy, “sexual inappropriate” culture at Hillsong has begun to emerge, and I just don’t get how a “religious man” gets out of this one!

According to Page Six, back in 2018, whistleblowers within the Hillsong organization sent a letter to church leaders citing “verified, widely circulated stories of inappropriate sexual behavior amongst staff/interns,” allegedly labeling Hillsong “...dangerous and a breeding ground for unchecked abuse.”

Apparently, one high-ranking church leader was instructed to leave after the letter exposed he had “multiple inappropriate sexual relationships with several female leaders and volunteers and was verbally, emotionally, and according to one woman, physically abusive in his relationships with these women.” Another high-ranking male church leader was accused of “not respecting physical and sexual boundaries within dating relationships with female church volunteers.”

Head pastors at Hillsong Church are accused of using volunteers as their personal babysitters for little or no pay, insiders said

After celebrity pastor of Hillsong NYC Carl Lentz was fired for cheating on his wife in November, sources told Insider that the issues at Hillsong run much deeper than one affair.

Several former volunteers said top pastors regularly took advantage of free and underpaid labor, and in some cases paid little or no money for volunteers to babysit their children.

In 2017, former Hillsong Boston volunteer Tiffany Perez said she was asked to take care of the top pastor Josh Kimes' daughter, Lyla, who was 4 at the time for $150 a week.

Perez often worked up to 25 hours a week babysitting, she said, which comes out to about $6 an hour, or half the minimum wage in Massachusetts. Perez also cleaned their home and looked after their dog, she said. She was not paid extra for the cleaning or dog care.

Fort Lauderdale ranked least safe city in America

The Sunshine State is a bit dimmer this morning.

Fort Lauderdale, one of Florida’s biggest cities, has been declared the most unsafe in America according to a new survey from WalletHub.

The credit and consumer reports website said the preponderance of negative weather events plus rising COVID-19 cases were responsible for the city’s poor ranking, the local Sun Sentinel reported.

“Aside from the types of hazards that can cause bodily injury or other physical harm, taking out an unaffordable second mortgage, forgoing health insurance or even visiting unsecured websites are also ways people run into danger,” said WalletHub. “Some cities are simply better at protecting their residents from harm.”

Gay man outed by boss against his will shunned by colleagues and left needing medical treatment

The man, who is in his 20s, disclosed his sexuality when he joined the company in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward last year. Anti-LGBT+ stigmas still run strong in Japan, and he stated that he wanted to wait until he felt ready before telling his team.

A few months later a female colleague started avoiding him and later quit. The man discovered at a party that she had learned from the superior that he was gay.

“I thought there was no problem telling that to just one person,” the superior told him while laughing, according to Japan Times.

His mental health suffered after the incident and he eventually took a leave of absence.

Nurse placed on leave for bragging on TikTok she doesn’t wear a mask

An Oregon nurse is placed on administrative leave after she posted a TikTok video shunning basic COVID-19 measures.

The since-deleted post from user @Loveiskind05 showed the nurse wearing scrubs and a stethoscope, with the caption, “When my coworkers find out I still travel, don’t wear a mask when I’m out and let my kids have play dates.” A “duet” of the original TikTok remains online.

Users apparently identified the nurse and then alerted her employer, Salem Health.

Baby Yoda Canceled Amid Accusations of Genocide

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. That also turns out to be true of the tiny.

Baby Yoda, who one year ago today cozied into the hearts of Star Wars fans with his bottomless eyes, fuzzy head, and adorable cooing, has invoked genuine social media wrath for last week's episode of The Mandalorian, in which the mystical infant remorselessly snacked on the eggs of an endangered galactic species.

Whether this is serious or silly depends, as Obi-Wan Kenobi would put it, on "a certain point of view."

In Chapter 10 of the Disney+ show, titled “The Passenger,” Pedro Pascal's bounty hunter agrees to ferry an amphibious alien woman known only as “Frog Lady” to a swampy distant world so she can fertilize her canister of eggs, which floated in the brine like peeled apricots. (Usually this show conjures memories of Boba Fett, but these called to mind boba tea.)

Collin Martin responds to his team walking off following homophobic slur

Earlier this year, the San Diego Loyal team walked off the field in support of their openly gay teammate Collin Martin after he was subjected to a homophobic slur from an opposing player.

At the moment the team walked off the field, Collin said he felt “distraught” adding: “I was just embarrassed that my sexuality had anything to do with the outcome of a game or us forfeiting it, so to me it was really a bit too much to handle. And I was just pissed that we had to deal with this!”

Dear Therapist: I Had a Great Relationship With My In-Laws. Then Everything Changed.

My husband and I have been together for seven years and married for three. We have a 1-year-old daughter together.

It took me a long time to get into a relationship; I wanted to find someone I could get along with, but also in-laws I could get along with, because I grew up watching my parents fight about their parents all the time. When my husband and I first met, his family was very kind to me. In fact, his family and I often joke that I married him because his family was so awesome.

After I gave birth to our daughter, everything changed. I am suddenly being judged for not being a good mom, for not having a job, for not losing my pregnancy weight fast enough. My husband does not want to be stuck in the middle, and even though he’ll speak to his parents about this, nothing gets resolved, because he doesn’t push them for any kind of resolution. He basically tells them something they did wasn’t nice, they acknowledge it and sometimes apologize, and then they make more unnecessary comments.

My in-laws purchased a home for us after the birth of our baby. I realize now that this purchase came with a lot of strings attached. They want to see their granddaughter whenever it is convenient for them—not for us or when it’s best for our daughter. They don’t practice social distancing. When I bring this up to my husband, he tells me that we need to be accommodating to his parents because they purchased the home for us and we’d be considered ungrateful. I tell him that I’d be happy to move and rent if I would have more control over my life and my daughter’s. He says his parents would view this as a “slap in the face.”

As much as I love my husband, I feel like the relationship I have with my in-laws is making this marriage difficult, because at the end of the day, he’ll choose his parents’ feelings over mine.

I don’t want my daughter growing up to see us fighting about her grandparents, as I did with my parents. Many times I’ve found myself holding my tongue to keep the peace. I want to set clear boundaries with my in-laws but also have a great relationship with them.

Do you have any insight for me?
