So long, salad bar: Grocers get creative, consider robots to revive prepared food

Grocery stores have shut down self-serve salad bars during the pandemic. They’ve taken away displays of fresh olives and dips. And they’ve replaced giant kettles of ready-to-ladle hot soup with sealed to-go containers.

The deli and prepared food areas that used to draw traffic to stores and differentiate grocers have fallen from favor as customers worry about the spread of the coronavirus, cook more from scratch and try to limit their time in stores.

Grocers are trying to revive those parts of the store with new approaches. At Publix, salad bars and hot bars have reopened, but employees dish out each item. Wegmans moved hummus, olives and more behind a counter where cheese shop employees fill orders. And at Texas-based H-E-B, some coolers carry prepared meals from local restaurants and a former food bar became an ice chest of beers.

Airlines could start forcing passengers to step on the scale before flights after FAA imposes new weight rules for planes

Luggage might not be the only items being placed on scales at airports in the near future as regulators are asking airlines to more accurately estimate how heavy their passengers are.

As part of new safety regulations, the Federal Aviation Administration is requiring airlines come up with new, more in-depth methods of determining passenger and carry-on baggage weight.

Everything from clothing to items such as cell phones must be taken into account under the new guidelines, and the move is an implicit acknowledgment that the average American is getting heavier.

Bosses should give staff going through a marriage break-up more work

'I've had many employees go through divorces and worse. And sitting at home moping doesn't help. Normally I found that... they told me "You were sympathetic" and their fellow colleagues help them through it.

'You pile work on to them a bit more because you try to distract them. I give compassionate leave for anything if it's genuinely compassionate leave. But how long does a divorce go on for?'

How Small Restaurant Owners Are Navigating the Labor Shortage

Every few weeks, it seems, a new photo goes viral on social media showing a sign in a restaurant window declaring: “This restaurant is closed because no one wants to work.” Restaurant owners have, for months now, been quoted in articles and TV news hits decrying the ongoing labor shortage, blaming the enhanced unemployment benefits enacted during the pandemic for disincentivizing returning to work.

But those benefits have expired in some states already — and some jobs data suggests ending them didn’t exactly lead to a wave of rehires.

Mental health professionals have 'abandoned' duty of care in treatment of trans youth

Winn said she's becoming "increasingly concerned" about the trend of youth identifying as transgender or non-binary and "the lifelong, irreversible medical experiments that are happening to children as a result of this ideology." She added that in 10-15 years, "we're going to see a transition regret crisis, and unfortunately, we are going to have to worry about some of the most frightening mental health outcomes as part of that."

Fast food restaurants take security into their own hands

"I would like to go into a Burger King and eat after dark,” said Ryan Mullen, a security guard at a hotel near the airport, who has seen plenty of crime. “I would like to go into a Carl's Jr., you know, a Subway, and not have to worry about being a prisoner in my own neighborhood.
