What Is Usually the Root Cause of Mental Illness?

Is mental illness just an outcome (not sure if that's the right word) of mental and emotional insecurities? originally appeared on Quora, the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world. You can follow Quora on Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus.

There is no one cause of mental illness. Some seem to have a strong genetic component, such as Schizophrenia, and others appear to be the obvious result of an exposure to environmental trauma, such as a soldier’s PTSD, with everything in between these two extremes.

Here are some of the main variables that combine to determine the likelihood that someone will develop a diagnosable mental disorder:

A pastor reportedly gave ‘miracle water’ to Ugandans. It was bleach.

An American pastor has been accused of distributing a poisonous “miracle drink” to thousands of Ugandans, including infants, according to a report by the Guardian.

Robert Baldwin — founder of a Christian nonprofit based in New Jersey — was providing a bogus “miracle cure” to almost 50,000 Ugandans, according to the outlet’s original reporting. In conjunction with Sam Little, a supposed British clairvoyant, Baldwin was promoting the substance as a cure for many diseases, including cancer, malaria and HIV/AIDS.

The cure? Known as “miracle mineral solution,” or MMS, the substance consists of sodium chlorite and citric acid, which combine to create chlorine dioxide, an industrial bleach. The U.S. Embassy in Kampala on Monday condemned the distribution of the substance.

In an interview with NJ Advance Media, Baldwin denied distributing the “cure” and said he had to shut down his operations because of the hate coming his way.

Woman jailed for 11 years for performing FGM on her 3-year-old daughter

A judge has sentenced a 37-year-old Ugandan woman to 11 years in jail for performing female genital mutilation (FGM) on her three-year-old daughter, the UK's Press Association (PA) news agency reported.

The defendant was found guilty of the "barbaric" practice last month, becoming the first person to be convicted of the offense in the UK.
In sentencing at London's Old Bailey criminal court Friday, Judge Mrs Justice Whipple handed down an 11-year jail term and a further two years for possession of indecent images and extreme pornography.

"FGM has long been against the law and let's be clear FGM is a form of child abuse," PA reported the judge as saying.

Man tortured dog by using it as a ‘soccer ball’: cops

A California man tortured a Chihuahua by binding it with electrical wire and using it as “a soccer ball,” police said.

A witness called cops to report that a man used wires to tie the missing dog, named Max, and repeatedly kicked him in Santa Ana on Sunday, authorities said.

Arriving officers found Jose Manuel Pantoja standing over the dog — who had a bungee cord around his throat and chest, and multicolored electrical wire around his legs.

Former kennel owner and wife allegedly had threesome with ‘Demon’ doberman

A former kennel owner was indicted in Virginia this week on multiple counts of bestiality and animal cruelty, according to reports.

The charges include an allegation that Richard Patterson, 48, and his wife, Christina Patterson, 42, both from Suffolk, had the front toenails of a male dog removed so they could more easily have sex with the animal, according to court documents.

Idaho Fish and Game commissioner resigns over graphic pictures from African hunting trip

Idaho's Fish and Game commissioner has resigned amid growing backlash after he shared photographs of him smiling and posing with animals he killed during a hunting trip to Africa.

In an email sent to more than 100 friends and colleagues, Blake Fischer attached 12 pictures of himself and his wife posing with various kills in Namibia: an oryx, a giraffe, a waterbuck, a leopard and a group of four baboons, The Idaho Statesman first reported on Friday.

Scathing Report Accuses the Pentagon of Developing an Agricultural Bioweapon

A new technology in which insects are used to genetically modify crops could be converted into a dangerous, and possibly illegal, bioweapon, alleges a Science Policy Forum report released today. Naturally, the organization leading the research says it’s doing nothing of the sort.

The report is a response to a ongoing research program funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Dubbed “Insect Allies,” the idea is to create more resilient crops to help farmers deal with climate change, drought, frost, floods, salinity, and disease. But instead of modifying seeds in a lab, farmers would send fleets of insects into their crops, where the genetically modified bugs would do their work, “infecting” the plants with a special virus that passes along the new resilience genes.

This Instagram Shames Men for Being Absolute Monsters on Dating Apps

It’s a tale as old as the internet: when Alexandra Tweten would log into her online dating accounts, she’d occasionally get messages from random guys that made her uneasy. Sometimes it’d be an unsolicited dick pic. Other times the messages themselves were lewd or creepy right off the bat. “I just wouldn’t respond, or I’d think, ‘No, thanks. I'm not interested,’” Tweten tells VICE over the phone. “And then they got hostile.”

Experts Explain Why LGBTQ People Have More Eating Disorders

While the National Eating Disorder Association reports that the LGBTQ community is disproportionately plagued by eating disorders, experts are saying that being a minority contributes to this dilemma.

Dr. Norman H. Kim, national director for program development at Reasons Eating Disorder Center, believes that queer people are drawn to unhealthy eating habits because of minority stress. Behaviors such as binging, purging, and undereating are a symptom of chronic social stress LGBTQ people experience as minorities, he told Stylecaster.

The rates at which queer people are having this reaction to being otherized are alarming.

Passengers Bled from Their Ears After Pilots 'Forgot' to Pressurize Plane

Obviously flying a plane is no small feat, but pilots have one, clear job to do: get passengers from point A to point B safely, and preferably without too much turbulence. Still, some pilots end up making horrifying or just plain negligent decisions in the cockpit that can put passengers' lives at risk, and apparently forgetting to pressurize the plane is one of them.

Restaurant Ticket Calls Woman 'Crazy Bitch' for Ordering a Burger Without Cheese

Henry’s Burgers & Cream is the kind of tiny local restaurant in a tiny Alabama town whose Facebook page is usually filled with updates about the daily specials (the fried popcorn shrimp plate seems to be a favorite), with good luck messages for the Brookwood Middle School football team, and frequent reminders to pre-order your party trays for Alabama football game days. Roll Tide, and all that.

On Wednesday, the Hatter family who run Henry’s posted an atypical update, ensuring everyone that they had issued a “heartfelt apology” to an irritated customer, and promising that “by God’s grace, [they] would to continue to please as many customers as possible.” And presumably, by God’s grace, none of their employees will call a customer a crazy bitch again, even if she does order a burger without cheese.
