After employees receive threats, one city is forced to nix rule requiring face masks in businesses

An emergency proclamation requiring face masks in stores and restaurants in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was nixed after store and restaurant owners received threats.

The proclamation was issued Thursday. Among other things, the order made businesses require patrons to cover their faces to combat the spread of coronavirus.

But on Friday, Mayor Will Joyce softened the rule to encourage, not require, face coverings, after several reports emerged of employees being verbally abused and being threatened with physical violence while trying to enforce the order -- all in just three hours of the rule going into effect.

"Many of those with objections cite the mistaken belief the requirement is unconstitutional, and under their theory, one cannot be forced to wear a mask. No law or court supports this view," said City Manager Norman McNickle in a statement. "It is further distressing that these people, while exercising their believed rights, put others at risk."

McNickle went on to explain the importance of face coverings in preventing the spread of coronavirus. The masks have been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

MAJORITY OF AMERICANS OPPOSE PROTESTS AGAINST CORONAVIRUS MEASURES: POLL

Most Americans are opposed to protests against stay-at-home orders and other coronavirus pandemic lockdown measures, according to a new poll.

The latest survey by Yahoo! News and YouGov found that 60 percent of the U.S. public opposed protesters calling for an immediate end to social distancing measures and stay-at-home orders designed to protect public safety.

Less than a quarter of respondents (22 percent) said they supported the rallies calling for America to be "reopened" while a further 18 percent said they were "not sure" how they felt on the matter.

Cuomo urges the NYPD to be 'more aggressive' in breaking up funerals, large gatherings and people 'playing Frisbee in the park' as he raises fines to $1,000 for people who flout social distancing rules

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging the NYPD to be more aggressive in breaking up large gatherings, including funerals, as people continue to flout social distancing guidance rules.

On Monday, he announced he was increasing fines for individuals caught breaking the rules from $500 to $1,000 and said it was 'everyone's responsibility' not to be reckless.

New York is seeing its curve flatten - the death rate is slowing for the first time in weeks and while the number of cases and infections is still growing, it means social distancing has been effective until now.

Cuomo has extended the state-wide lockdown on non-essential businesses until the end of April and is telling people not to become 'over confident' because of the new figures.

Major airline to sever ties with chocolate supplier over the owner's pro-life, Christian views

Swiss Air Lines is said to have nixed its relationship chocolate manufacturer Läderach over its owner's affiliation with pro-life, Christian causes, LifeSiteNews' Martin Bürger reported.

The airline had a business relationship with chocolatier Läderach that spanned over a decade, providing passengers with small boxes of its world-famous chocolates as a way of saying thanks for flying with the airlines.

Now, after months of protests from activists, Swiss Air has decided to sever ties with the chocolate-maker and will stop distributing its truffles and other sweets in the first half of 2020.

Why are they attacking a chocolate-maker?

University of Kansas faculty and staff want Chick-fil-A boycotted, calling it a 'bastion of bigotry'

Faculty and staff at the University of Kansas sent a letter to the school's chancellor, calling for a boycott of Chick-fil-A on campus over the company's stance on LGBTQ issues, according to The Hill.

Over the summer, the university allowed Chick-fil-A to open a location inside the student union, and entered a contract agreement with the company to sponsor the "Chick-fil-A coin toss" at home football games in coming years. Faculty and staff have protested Chick-fil-A's support of organizations "hostile to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer LGBTQ people, families, and communities."

Adults Take to Twitter to Bully 16-Year-Old Climate Activist

A few extremely balanced adults exhibited cool behavior yesterday when they decided to mock a teen on Twitter: 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who set sail from Plymouth, U.K., on a two-week, carbon-neutral sailing voyage to attend climate talks in New York and Chile. Thunberg is a Swedish activist with Asperger syndrome who began striking from school to bring awareness to climate change in May 2018, and has since become a leader of the youth-driven international climate movement.

New Campaign Highlights Major Companies Backing Antigay Politicians

A new campaign wants corporations like AT&T and Amazon to stop giving money to anti-LGBTQ politicians. Until that happens, the organization suggests consumers stop putting dollars in those companies’ accounts.

The political arm for CREDO Mobile, a mobile virtual network directing revenue to progressive causes, launched a petition campaign today targeting AT&T, T-Mobile, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Dell. Officials say those companies alone have donated more than $5 million to homophobic politicians, all while providing corporate sponsorship to Pride events and marketing to LGBTQ consumers.

"It is unacceptable for corporations to co-opt the pride flag in order to make a profit off the LGBTQ community while simultaneously giving millions to some of the most hateful, homophobic members of Congress,” said Campaign Manager Thaís Marques. of CREDO Action.

Facebook Moderators Are Dying at Their Desks

Hell Factory

At a Facebook content moderation facility in Tampa, Florida, contractors working for Cognizant are regularly subjected to traumatizing, unsanitary, and dangerous conditions — that in at least one case literally led to a death.

The contractors, who review as many as 200 flagged Facebook posts per day depicting animal abuse, sexual abuse, murder, and other horrifying acts, are subjected to hellish work conditions. That’s according to an investigation by The Verge‘s Casey Newton that reveals how tens of thousands of people spend their days exposed to the very worst that the internet has to offer.

Airline Passenger Arrested After Confrontation With Crew Over Vomit In Daughter's Seat

A Frontier Airlines passenger was removed from a flight and arrested following a confrontation with a flight attendant after she complained about vomit in her daughter's seat. A video was shared online Wednesday showing the incident that took place Saturday on the flight from Las Vegas to North Carolina.

Rosetta Swinney said her flight to Raleigh-Durham had already been delayed so staff could clean the plane but when she boarded the plane, she noticed her daughter’s seat was still dirty.

"She jumped up to say mom! ‘My hands are wet,’” Swinney told local media WTVD-TV. “She smelled it. She says 'this is vomit, mom.' So we went to look. It was on the bag, all over her shirt, her hands.”

The 53-year-old said she told the flight attendant about it but her requests were ignored following which she had a confrontation with the crew. Following the confrontation, the airline called authorities who handcuffed the woman. Swinney's 14-year-old daughter was heard crying in the video as she watched her mother getting arrested.

Catholic Bishops Fund Anti-Choice ‘Clinics’ Set to Receive Trump Title X Funding

You would think that the crisis over clerical abuse roiling the Catholic Church for the past few years would be an “all hands on deck” moment in terms of the resources and attention of the Catholic hierarchy. You would also think that given the revelations about predatory behavior reaching to the very highest levels of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the systemic misogyny of the church’s leadership, which last week prompted the entire staff of the Vatican women’s magazine to resign, the hierarchy might back down on its insistence that contraception and abortion were to blame for many of society’s ills and turn its attention inward.

You would be wrong.

Apparently the Catholic hierarchy still has time to find ways to attempt to undercut access to birth control and abortion. As the New York Times reported last Friday, the Trump administration is funneling $5.1 million in federal Title X family planning funding to a Southern California-based chain of faith-based anti-choice medical clinics called Obria. Obria is the more millennial-friendly name given to the former Birth Choice crisis pregnancy centers founded by Kathleen Eaton Bravo, a Catholic woman who pioneered the idea of creating a “medical model” corporate-sounding anti-abortion clinic to siphon money away from Planned Parenthood.

The Obria clinics keep the features of crisis pregnancy centers, including the lure of free or low-cost pregnancy testing and ultrasounds, which lure women with unintended pregnancy in the door to hear a pitch about the horrors and dangers of abortion, but add just enough primary care services—STD testing, prenatal care, and well-women visits—to qualify for Medicaid and some private insurance reimbursement, and now, with the aid of the Trump administration, actual Title X family planning funding.

Cargill ground beef recall after E. coli outbreak kills 1, sickens 17

More than 132,000 pounds of possibly tainted ground beef sold nationwide is being recalled in an E. coli outbreak that has killed one person and sickened 17 others, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

Cargill Meat Solutions, a division of the nagribusiness giant Cargill, is recalling approximately 132,600 pounds of ground beef products made from the chuck portion of carcasses that may be contaminated with E. coli, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, said in a statement.

The Next Time You Crave Chicken, Remember That Chick-fil-A Is Still Very Much Anti-Gay

In September 2012, after years of publicly opposing same-sex marriage and donating millions to anti-LGBTQ groups, Chick-fil-A — the Christian-founded fast-food chain known for their chicken sandwiches and billboards of half-literate cows encouraging folks to “EAT MOR CHIKIN” — said that it had “ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights.”

According to ThinkProgress, the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s most recent IRS filings from 2015 reveal hundreds of thousands in donations to anti-LGBTQ groups. They gave $1 million to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a religious organization with “a strict ‘sexual purity’ policy, prohibiting any ‘homosexual acts.'”

They also donated $200,000 to the Paul Anderson Youth Home, a Georgia-based group that runs a “Christian residential home for troubled youth.” The organization believes that the “sexual, physical and mental abuse of children” resulted in “the explosion of homosexuality in the last century.”

WHY IT’S ILLEGAL TO FEED THE HOMELESS IN CITIES ACROSS AMERICA

Volunteers made headlines Sunday when 12 of them were charged with misdemeanor offenses after feeding homeless people in El Cajon, California, but the ban against feeding the homeless is not unique to the city. Dozens across the United States have similar policies that ban food-sharing in public places.
