Cargill ground beef recall after E. coli outbreak kills 1, sickens 17

More than 132,000 pounds of possibly tainted ground beef sold nationwide is being recalled in an E. coli outbreak that has killed one person and sickened 17 others, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

Cargill Meat Solutions, a division of the nagribusiness giant Cargill, is recalling approximately 132,600 pounds of ground beef products made from the chuck portion of carcasses that may be contaminated with E. coli, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS, said in a statement.

The Next Time You Crave Chicken, Remember That Chick-fil-A Is Still Very Much Anti-Gay

In September 2012, after years of publicly opposing same-sex marriage and donating millions to anti-LGBTQ groups, Chick-fil-A — the Christian-founded fast-food chain known for their chicken sandwiches and billboards of half-literate cows encouraging folks to “EAT MOR CHIKIN” — said that it had “ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights.”

According to ThinkProgress, the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s most recent IRS filings from 2015 reveal hundreds of thousands in donations to anti-LGBTQ groups. They gave $1 million to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a religious organization with “a strict ‘sexual purity’ policy, prohibiting any ‘homosexual acts.'”

They also donated $200,000 to the Paul Anderson Youth Home, a Georgia-based group that runs a “Christian residential home for troubled youth.” The organization believes that the “sexual, physical and mental abuse of children” resulted in “the explosion of homosexuality in the last century.”

WHY IT’S ILLEGAL TO FEED THE HOMELESS IN CITIES ACROSS AMERICA

Volunteers made headlines Sunday when 12 of them were charged with misdemeanor offenses after feeding homeless people in El Cajon, California, but the ban against feeding the homeless is not unique to the city. Dozens across the United States have similar policies that ban food-sharing in public places.

People are threatening to boycott Starbucks over its holiday cup's 'gay agenda' — but the controversy was invented by the media (SBUX)

People are freaking out over a Starbucks boycott that has essentially been invented by the media.

Last week, BuzzFeed News published an article with the headline "Is Starbucks' New Holiday Cup Totally Gay?"

The article was based on an ad campaign that came out in late October and featured what appears to be one lesbian couple — among other couples — and fewer than 10 tweets, most of them extremely tongue-in-cheek. Last week, Business Insider could only find a single tweet —with zero likes and retweets — that expressed negative sentiments about what BuzzFeed News called the holiday cup's "gay agenda."

It Turns Out Your Love of Glitter Is Actually Bad for the Environment

From glitter bombs, beards, makeup and sparkly protest signs, glitter is a mainstay of modern LGBTQ culture. But U.K. scientists are urging the government to ban it because it’s apparently very bad for the environment.

If you’ve ever spilled glitter or used any on your body, than you understand that it never really completely goes away. (That’s part of the reason that glitter is sometimes called “raver scabies.”) It’s non-biodegradable and even when it’s thrown away or washed down the drain, it still ends up in our soil and water supply where it creates even more problems.

The issue, according to Josh Gabbatiss of The Independent, is that most glitter contains a plastic called polyethylene terephthalate (or PET). The PET contained in glitter is microplastic, a word that refers to any small bits of plastic that are smaller than a fifth of an inch.

Cards Against Humanity buying plot of land on border to try to stop Trump's wall

The company that makes Cards Against Humanity is trying to prevent President Trump's proposed border wall from being built by purchasing a plot of vacant land along the country's border.

"Donald Trump is a preposterous golem who is afraid of Mexicans. He is so afraid that he wants to build a twenty-billion dollar wall that everyone knows will accomplish nothing," a statement said on the website Cards Against Humanity Saves America.

"So we’ve purchased a plot of vacant land on the border and retained a law firm specializing in eminent domain to make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for the wall to get built."

Inside London's anti-Trump bar that's raising money for refugees, women's rights, and LGBT rights

Twumps in London is an anti-Trump bar. It opened to raise money for charities supporting refugees, women's rights, and LGBT rights.

The bar is designed to look like Trump's NYC penthouse, with a lot of gold furniture made to look cheap and nasty on purpose.

Alexa decides to have a rave while German owner is away

The future belongs to AI-powered devices that will play music and party on their own when we're not there.

At least that's the takeaway from a curious/disturbing incident involving a German guy in Hamburg.

While home assistant devices like Alexa need a hotword in order to switch on, the one belonging to Oliver Haberstroh decided to have a rave at 1:50 a.m. Friday night/Saturday morning, while he was away.

"I was perfectly happy with your service and Alexa," Haberstroh wrote on Amazon's German Facebook page. "However, since Friday night the relationship between Alexa and me has taken a turn around. You could say 'it is complicated' [now] and things have gone so far that we now unfortunately have to go our separate ways."

Papa John's Distances Itself from Alt-Right Following CEO's NFL Comments

The chain has unwittingly corralled support from some groups on the far right. Now, it's doing damage control.

It's been mere days since Papa John's CEO John Schnatter blamed his company's sagging sales on plunging ratings for NFL games. On a call with investors last Wednesday, Schattner claimed that fewer people were inclined to buy pizza from Papa John's, the official pizza sponsor of the NFL, because of NFL leadership's inaction regarding the scores of athletes protesting within its ranks.

This led both Pizza Hut and DiGiornio—neither of whom, mind you, is an official sponsor of the NFL—to join the now-public conversation and respond that neither company had seen a dent in its sales due to consumer irritation with these protests.

Americans Are Renouncing Citizenship at a Record Pace

In the third quarter of this year, 1,376 Americans renounced their U.S. citizenship, putting the annual tally on track to top 2016’s record, data from the Treasury Department show.

If this year’s fourth quarter mirrors that of 2016, when 2,365 people chose to expatriate, 2017’s annual tally would be 6,813. That’s a 26 percent rise from 2016’s total of 5,411—which was itself a 26 percent jump from 2015.

Stephen Curry Responds to Being Only Person Mentioned in GOP Tax Plan

The newly proposed Republican tax plan mentioned only one individual by name in its proposal: Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry.

That particular section of the tax plan reads:

"The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act includes specific safeguards to prevent tax avoidance and help ensure taxpayers of all income levels play by the rules under this new fairer, simpler tax system. Our legislation will ensure this much-needed tax relief goes to the local job creators it’s designed to help by distinguishing between the individual wage income of NBA All-Star Stephen Curry and the pass-through business income of Steve’s Bike Shop."

On Thursday, Curry responded...

Why Restaurants Are Banning Kids

On Tuesday, a Tampa Bay craft beer bar and pizzeria stuck a controversial sign on its doors. It read: "NO CHILDREN."

No, the owners of Hampton Station were not advertising their love of the classic Mountain Goats song; rather, they were implementing an informal kids ban. The backlash was extraordinary, reports WKRG.

"I definitely think that sales are gonna take a dip,” Hampton Station owner Troy Taylor told WKRG. "We had an incident last week where some kids were endangering themselves and others. I haven’t got much sleep the past four or five days really, because of this. ‘Cause this is my livelihood."

A number of tech companies have joined Apple, PayPal, Lyft and Yelp in a corporate brief urging the Supreme Court to reject the notion that businesses can choose to discriminate against LGBT customers.

Amazon, Airbnb, Intel, Postmates, Salesforce, SurveyMonkey and Uber are among 37 companies that have signed on to a brief in support of a gay couple who were refused service by a Colorado baker.

It’s Official! California Is the First State to Ban the Pet Store Sale of Puppy Mill Dogs

Cat, dogs, bunnies and more received a big break this week.

California’s Assembly Bill 485 has passed, making California the first state to ban the sale of commercially-bred pets in pet stores statewide.

“This landmark law breaks the puppy mill supply chain that pushes puppies into California pet stores and has allowed unscrupulous breeders to profit from abusive practices,” said Matt Bershadker, President and CEO of the ASPCA. “We’re proud to be part of the coalition that worked alongside Assembly member Patrick O’Donnell to pass this critical animal protection bill, and thank the California legislature and Governor Brown for sending the clear message that industries supporting animal cruelty will not be tolerated in our society.”
