Americans Just Want Immigrants for the Food

In 2016, Donald Trump posed in front of a taco bowl, fresh from Trump Tower Grill, and declared “I love Hispanics!” It fooled only the very gullible. Taco bowls, while delicious, are to Mexico what unlimited salad and breadsticks are to Tuscany, and his love for one didn’t stop him from trapping hundreds of Latin migrants at border camps. Trump can eat as many taco bowls as he wants, but he’s still racist.

Unfortunately, a new survey confirms that Americans, and people all over the world, tend to have Trump’s mindset when it comes to immigrants (or just non-white people), their contributions to culture, and their food. A YouGov survey of seven European countries and the U.S. found that the “most commonly agreed benefit of immigration has been better food.” The only country that responded differently was France, where everyone was more focused on how immigrants could make their soccer team better. And while the food may be a boon, Americans at least are still worried about providing welfare to migrants, and the (unfounded) crime risk of letting immigrants into the country. Though Americans were the most accepting of any of the countries surveyed, just “one in four Americans (30%) believe [immigration] only brings benefits.” We want your food...we just don’t want you.

American Parentxs Are Way Too Focused on Their Kidxs’ Self-Esteem

American parents today are also quick to protect their kids from disappointment and failure. We give participation trophies when kids don’t win first place; we fly into the school to deliver kids’ forgotten homework. But these well-meaning interventions backfire because a child with healthy self-esteem is a child who has learned, through experience, that he can overcome obstacles and disappointment. He’s had the opportunity to fail and has discovered that failing doesn’t preclude him from being loved.

Celebrities Who Were Totally Honest About Why They Chose a Child-Free Life

A few years ago, the actor and singer revealed that he just wasn’t ready for fatherhood, acknowledging that becoming a dad is a big responsibility that he wouldn’t be able to fully commit to at the moment. He admitted, “I think it’s really important to be present if you have children. I have a lot of...things to take care of.”

In the poorest county, in America’s poorest state, a virus hits home: 'Hunger is rampant'

On the cracked country roads of Lexington, deep in the Mississippi delta, an empty yellow school bus drives slowly, making life-sustaining drop offs on the way.

Here, in the poorest county, in America’s poorest state, the coronavirus has yet to ravage the jurisdiction with infection. There has been one recorded Covid-19 death in the county, Clinton Cobbins, Lexington’s first African American mayor. But even now the coronavirus still poses a serious threat to life.

In Holmes county consolidated – the school district to which Lexington belongs – every single child qualifies for free school meals, a marker of pervasive poverty. For many, said superintendent Dr James L Henderson, breakfast and lunch at school are the only nutritious meals a student will eat in a day. For a few, they are the only meals.

When the coronavirus pandemic led to statewide school closures, Henderson, who was born in the county, left for most of his adult life, but returned in 2018 to assume his position, was left with a significant dilemma: how to feed the 3,000 children under his authority.

The Teens Have Spoken: Virginity Rocks

After generations of teens defied their parents, religion and society through daring acts of furtive fucking, today’s teens have flipped the script, declaring virignity the most subversive sexual act of Gen Z.

“Virginity Rocks” is the seemingly chaste new slogan teens across the country are sporting on shirts, hats, lanyards and other merch, and while some bear it ironically, the trend has also caught the attention of pro-abstinence communities.

While the man behind the brand, 27-year-old YouTuber Danny Duncan, told the New York Times he began wearing the shirts as a joke in 2017, he added that he’s glad to see fans have embraced the initially “tongue-in-cheek” slogan in different ways.

Meet The Man Who Thinks Humans Should Go Extinct

NASA has found it to be ‘extremely likely’ that the cause of climate change is down to human activity – our current carbon dioxide concentration levels stand at 412 parts per million which is an increase of over 45% on pre-industrial levels.

Due to this, Les believes the best thing we can do for the planet is ‘live long and die out’, which is the movement’s motto.

It’s evident humans are the leading cause of climate change. According to Les, it would take the Earth 3-10 million years to recover from our actions.

Because of this, Les feels humans should die out so the earth can begin to restore itself, and to do that, we need to stop procreating.

Wherever we go, extinctions occur and we [humans] are causing the sixth mass extinction. We may not be able to stop that from happening, but the sooner we go extinct and the more species that are left – the pasture and the biosphere can return to biodiversity.

Should we penalize parents for having ‘extra kids’?

Bill Nye “the Science Guy” did exactly what scientists are supposed to do this week — ask questions — and people are blasting him for it.

The engineer-turned-comedian-turned-TV host has sparked widespread outrage on social media thanks to an idea he proposed Tuesday on his new Netflix series, “Bill Nye Saves the World.”

During a panel discussion, the 61-year-old Cornell grad asked: “Should we have policies that penalize people for having extra kids in the developed world?”

Travis Rieder, a bioethicist at Johns Hopkins University, said he believed it was a good idea.

“I do think that we should at least consider it,” he told Nye.

The secret to... raising unentitled children

Beware prioritising material possessions over time spent with your child. Children are like sponges and will soak up what’s around them, so your actions are important. If you want – and get – stuff all the time, they will expect that, too. Spend time with them, listen to them, talk to them. Help your child feel secure.

Climate change's impact on human health is already here — and is 'potentially irreversible,' report says

Climate change is already having an extraordinary impact on human health worldwide — affecting the spread of infectious diseases, exposing millions to air pollution and heat waves and dramatically reducing labor productivity, according to a report released Monday.

"The human symptoms of climate change are unequivocal and potentially irreversible," the report by the British medical journal The Lancet says, and the situation is so serious that significant gains by modern medicine and technology are being undercut.

"The delayed response to climate change over the past 25 years has jeopardized human life and livelihoods," the report says.

Amazon, Intel and Uber join brief against LGBT discrimination

A number of tech companies have joined Apple, PayPal, Lyft and Yelp in a corporate brief urging the Supreme Court to reject the notion that businesses can choose to discriminate against LGBT customers.

Amazon, Airbnb, Intel, Postmates, Salesforce, SurveyMonkey and Uber are among 37 companies that have signed on to a brief in support of a gay couple who were refused service by a Colorado baker.

Clothing Swaps Can Be a Lifeline for Queer and Trans People

Last year Wiley, a trans man, organized a large clothing swap among his friends and community. Although it wasn’t exclusive to queer and trans people, most of the attendees were queer or trans. According to people who came to the swap, what happened there was magical.

Years before, when he was starting to dress in a masculine style, Wiley struggled to afford new clothing, but received a donation of masculine clothing from a trans woman. Now that he had more clothing, he was happy to pass these items on to other butch and masculine-of-center people. The clothing swap included clothing for fat people, a group that often struggles to find comfortable clothing. Books and beauty products were added to the exchange. Wiley himself even acquired a beloved Dave Matthews Band long-sleeved T-shirt. The leftover clothing was donated to worthy causes, like the Boys and Girls Club.

Doctors in Puerto Rico: 'Reality here is post-apocalyptic'

Melted medications. Surgical procedures conducted in sweltering 95-degree heat. Malfunctioning X-ray machines.

This is the reality doctors in Puerto Rico are facing almost four weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated the island.

"We're practicing disaster medicine in real life," said Dr. William Kotler, a senior resident in emergency medicine with Florida Hospital in Orlando, who spent two weeks volunteering on the island earlier this month. "We improvise if we have to, with very little resources."

These ‘hot dudes reading’ are sending books to kids impacted by hurricanes

Though Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have passed, the clean up has only just begun. Now, one of our favorite Instagram pages, @HotDudesReading, is teaming up with the nonprofit First Book to send books to all the kids who have been impacted by the storms.

The two groups have joined forces to launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the initiative. 100% of the funds raised will be used to gather books and distribute them to children affected by the storms. Several publishers, including Chronicle Books and Simon & Schuster, have also joined the effort, already donating 10,000 books to the effort.

Florida governor urges residents ahead of Hurricane Irma: 'You've got to get out; you can't wait'

With more than a million Florida residents ordered to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Irma, Gov. Rick Scott urged people to leave without delay.

"If you're in an evacuation zone, you've got to get out; you can't wait," Scott said in an interview today with ABC News' "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts.

"This thing's coming," he warned. "It looks like it's going to go right through the middle of our state."

California Today: A Proposal to Split California Into Three

California, home to nearly 40 million people, has commonly been declared ungovernable.

That’s why some people think we should carve it up.

In contrast to the so-called Calexit movement, which aspires to secession, these proponents see California’s salvation in greater local autonomy within the union.

A few years ago, a bid to create six states out of California drew wide media attention but ultimately fizzled.

Now, the architect of that effort, a tech billionaire named Timothy C. Draper, is back with another idea: three Californias. He submitted paperwork that would put the question before voters in 2018.
