Why Restaurants Are Banning Kids

On Tuesday, a Tampa Bay craft beer bar and pizzeria stuck a controversial sign on its doors. It read: "NO CHILDREN."

No, the owners of Hampton Station were not advertising their love of the classic Mountain Goats song; rather, they were implementing an informal kids ban. The backlash was extraordinary, reports WKRG.

"I definitely think that sales are gonna take a dip,” Hampton Station owner Troy Taylor told WKRG. "We had an incident last week where some kids were endangering themselves and others. I haven’t got much sleep the past four or five days really, because of this. ‘Cause this is my livelihood."

Inside the vigilante group of New Yorkers who hunt rats at night

Rats aren't only a part of New York City’s underground — they're an inseparable part of its pop culture. There’s Master Splinter from the Ninja Turtles, Pizza Rat, and even Cannibal Rat. But for every celebrity rat, there’s another 250,000 to 2 million anonymous rodents living in the city — and the city health department is fighting to bring down.

Last year, three people in a Bronx city block made the news for contracting leptospirosis through rat urine. Only two survived.

Assisted dying: Campaigners renewed hope for change in the law

David Peace has motor neurone disease, a terminal illness which gradually affects the brain and nerves.

David, who lives in central London, is one of a number of people behind renewed calls to update England and Wales assisted dying laws to allow terminally ill people, with six months to live, the right to end their life, subject to strict criteria.
A second reading of the assisted dying bill is due to take place in the House of Lords this autumn.

Ohio school board unanimously fires 7 coaches after Jewish student-athlete was allegedly forced to eat pepperoni pizza

The incident unfolded at the McKinley Senior High School in Canton on May 25 when the 17-year-old player said that head coach Marcus Wattley told him to sit in a chair in the middle of their gym and eat an entire pepperoni pizza. The student had been absent from a voluntary strengthening and conditioning practice.

Gilbert said that the student was under threat of having the other players being punished if he refused to eat the pizza. They also implied that he might be kicked off the team, he claimed. The student received therapy over the trauma from the incident.

My Wife Is Mad I Found Our Child’s Donor Siblings

My wife and I, both women, have one child, who is now 5. We used a sperm donor from a federally licensed bank, to ensure our legal parental rights. I conceived and carried the baby, and both our names are on the birth certificate. Here’s the thing: A couple of months ago, I brought up with my wife the prospect of finding our kid’s donor siblings. She told me she wasn’t crazy about the idea but that I should go ahead and do what I want (obviously, this was said without enthusiasm). I brought it up to her several times after that, and her response was the same fatalistic, “Do what you want, obviously my wishes don’t matter here.” I took my spouse at her word, and started looking. In a secure, vetted fashion (through the sperm bank itself), I was able to find a group of other families who used the same donor. And there are a bunch of kids—over a dozen!

I am overjoyed. I’m excited about the prospect of meeting these families, of our children having close relationships with their half-siblings as they grow up. Seeing pictures, hearing family stories, and learning about medical histories are all great outcomes of this. And as a lesbian, I am excited to connect with a lot of other families, many of them LGBTQ, and have a sense of community with them. My wife is threatened by all of this. She says it feels like I am saying, “Here’s our kid’s real family.” I feel that her stance is emotionally immature and centers herself, not our child’s needs. My wife was really upset over my findings. She has asked me to not tell our child (yet?), and told me she felt hurt because deciding to contact donor siblings was something she wanted us to do together. Which is clearly not true!

Employee Caught on Camera Using Floor Mop to Clean Tables at N Fl Restaurant

A fast food restaurant is apologizing after an employee at a North Florida location was caught on camera using a floor mop to clean the top of tables.

The video, shot at a Burger King located in the Jacksonville area, shows the employee using the mop on the table before going back to using it on the floor.

NBC affiliate WBBH-TV reports the company released a statement apologizing for the actions of the employee, calling it “unacceptable” but did not say if that worker had been disciplined.

Americans Just Want Immigrants for the Food

In 2016, Donald Trump posed in front of a taco bowl, fresh from Trump Tower Grill, and declared “I love Hispanics!” It fooled only the very gullible. Taco bowls, while delicious, are to Mexico what unlimited salad and breadsticks are to Tuscany, and his love for one didn’t stop him from trapping hundreds of Latin migrants at border camps. Trump can eat as many taco bowls as he wants, but he’s still racist.

Unfortunately, a new survey confirms that Americans, and people all over the world, tend to have Trump’s mindset when it comes to immigrants (or just non-white people), their contributions to culture, and their food. A YouGov survey of seven European countries and the U.S. found that the “most commonly agreed benefit of immigration has been better food.” The only country that responded differently was France, where everyone was more focused on how immigrants could make their soccer team better. And while the food may be a boon, Americans at least are still worried about providing welfare to migrants, and the (unfounded) crime risk of letting immigrants into the country. Though Americans were the most accepting of any of the countries surveyed, just “one in four Americans (30%) believe [immigration] only brings benefits.” We want your food...we just don’t want you.

Meat eaters get hit hardest as inflation sees grocery bills soar

Milk is more expensive according to 51 percent of those surveyed; for prepared foods it is 50 percent of those questioned and for seafood 49 percent.

A quarter said they are buying less red meat as a result of the price hikes. Meat prices rocketed by up to 25 per cent last spring, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when meat plans were hit by staff shortages caused by the virus.

They subsequently dropped, but Bloomberg's data suggests shoppers are once again feeling the pinch.

Morning Consult economist John Leer told Bloomberg: 'We’ve got these pockets of inflation without having corresponding wage growth, and that’s going to put consumers in a really tough spot.'

For Hispanic and black Americans, more than 40 per cent report spending more money on food since the start of 2021. For white Americans that figure is 30 percent.

If Palm Springs isn't going to ban short-term rentals, it needs more limits

While desert cities like Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City, La Quinta and Palm Desert have chosen to limit or ban STRs, Palm Springs' approach is the opposite: We essentially rubber stamp new vacation rental permit applications without any regard to how overly saturated our neighborhoods are with these mini-motels.

The result is we're now up to 2,254 short term rentals in Palm Springs, an increase of 26% over the past three years, according to a Palm Springs Post report. But citywide numbers don't tell the story, because some neighborhoods are more impacted than others.

Whether you’re ‘childless’ or ‘childfree’, you shouldn’t have to talk about it

...the question of having children – or not, as it may be – is even more loaded, because it intersects with so many other factors in our lives: health, finances, employment status, gender or sexuality, housing, relationship status, and so on. These are not things you necessarily want to delve into over the course of a casual conversation.
