So long, salad bar: Grocers get creative, consider robots to revive prepared food

Grocery stores have shut down self-serve salad bars during the pandemic. They’ve taken away displays of fresh olives and dips. And they’ve replaced giant kettles of ready-to-ladle hot soup with sealed to-go containers.

The deli and prepared food areas that used to draw traffic to stores and differentiate grocers have fallen from favor as customers worry about the spread of the coronavirus, cook more from scratch and try to limit their time in stores.

Grocers are trying to revive those parts of the store with new approaches. At Publix, salad bars and hot bars have reopened, but employees dish out each item. Wegmans moved hummus, olives and more behind a counter where cheese shop employees fill orders. And at Texas-based H-E-B, some coolers carry prepared meals from local restaurants and a former food bar became an ice chest of beers.

Ohio school board unanimously fires 7 coaches after Jewish student-athlete was allegedly forced to eat pepperoni pizza

The incident unfolded at the McKinley Senior High School in Canton on May 25 when the 17-year-old player said that head coach Marcus Wattley told him to sit in a chair in the middle of their gym and eat an entire pepperoni pizza. The student had been absent from a voluntary strengthening and conditioning practice.

Gilbert said that the student was under threat of having the other players being punished if he refused to eat the pizza. They also implied that he might be kicked off the team, he claimed. The student received therapy over the trauma from the incident.

Restaurant Charges Family With Children $50 Fee

If you hate dining with loud and energetic children nearby, maybe head to this place in Georgia. The restaurant owner is allegedly reprimanding families with overactive children at the table — and charging a $50 fee for "adults unable to parent."

Gay bro says his dog stopped respecting him after watching him bottom

“The guy was being pretty rough and I was getting into it moaning being slutty you know bottom things until the top pointed out the dog was watching us,” he writes. “I got him out of the room and closed the door but since then my dog doesn’t seem to want to listen to me, respect my authority, or even spend much time with me. I try to pet or hug him and he growls or moves away, that wasn’t the case before.”

Why are we catching more diseases from animals?

The world is grappling with the new coronavirus, which has spread from China to at least 15 other countries.

Outbreaks of new infectious diseases are typically seen as a "one off".

But the new virus - thought to have stemmed from wildlife - highlights our risk from animal-borne disease. This is likely to be more of a problem in future as climate change and globalisation alter the way animals and humans interact.

How can animals make people ill?
In the past 50 years, a host of infectious diseases have spread rapidly after making the evolutionary jump from animals to humans.

The HIV/Aids crisis of the 1980s originated from great apes, the 2004-07 avian flu pandemic came from birds, and pigs gave us the swine flu pandemic in 2009. More recently, it was discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) came from bats, via civets, while bats also gave us Ebola.

Humans have always caught diseases from animals. In fact, most new infectious diseases come from wildlife.

Restaurant closes for 'day of kindness'

This Massachusetts restaurant has a tip for rude diners – be nice, or don’t eat.

The owners of Brewster-based Apt Cape Cod decided to shut down for a "day of kindness" after a slew of customers apparently mistreated its staff, cursed and demanded take orders before the restaurant even opened for business.

"There were a few incidents that were so horrendous – the cursing and not being understanding of our short staff and limited menu – we had someone call in at 6:30 a.m. before we even open demand take out saying, ‘I’m going to come in, and you're going to serve me," Emilia Povero, a manager at Apt Cade Cod told FOX News. "That was the straw that broke the camel's back. Our staff doesn't need to deal with this."

Male Pre-K Teacher Upset That Boss Told Him To Wear 'Appropriate' Undergarments

“I do a lot of running around and activities with the children, so the center has literally told me to wear athletic clothing to work,” he wrote. “I am fine with that. I typically wear a t-shirt and either athletic shorts or joggers.”

The man added that he is well over six feet tall and since he works with toddlers, his job requires him to bend over a lot.

‘Many times, elders go back into the closet’

As the LGBTQ population ages, and seeks health services, whether for physical or mental health needs, Moone said clinics and providers that are truly welcoming to the LGBTQ community will be more important than ever. “Providers can’t just slap a rainbow flag on the front door. Sure, that’s a cue about the culture of the provider, but more welcoming avenues are still needed,” he said.

Some of these signals to LGBTQ patients include waiting room images of same-sex and nonbinary couples, literature that provides actionable and appropriate resources on topics relative to health and aging, and accurate language on clinic intake forms.

Woman Leaving Dinner With Boyfriend's Parents

Her actions have caused a rift between her and her boyfriend, who told her that leaving the meal was an "asshole move."

A 1997 study by Glenn Gehar at the University of New Hampshire highlighted that we often choose romantic partners who are similar to our opposite-sex parents.

After a quick prayer, her boyfriend's dad was apparently heard saying something along the lines of "let us dig and let the food keep us quiet."

They won’t be home for the holidays

“The biggest lesson learned from the pandemic is you don’t need to settle, and if people aren’t giving you the energy that you deserve, and even if they’re family, you don’t need to participate,” Sarah says.

“They really are just saying yes to themselves. They’re saying no to travel. They’re saying no to the hustle and bustle of getting somewhere … They’re not saying no to their family. They’re saying no to the process,” she says. “And what they’re saying yes to is, I just need some down time for me.”

“Is the decision to go home and spend time with family based on a desire to be with them, or based on guilt about being ‘the one who doesn’t go home’? Are you willing to sacrifice some of your own peace of mind in order to not feel guilty or [be] labeled as selfish?”

Why You Should Stop Throwing Out Expired Food

While we no doubt could — and should — reduce waste overall, FoodPrint offers one surprising statistic that speaks to why we fail to use so much food: "An estimated 80% of Americans prematurely discard food due to confusion over the meaning of date labels." A similar issue was brought up by Vox. People throw away food because the label on the packaging says that we've passed the date for use. Originally, the labels were only meant for stores to know when they could stock which products. Customers, however, wanted to know what was on the labels, so it was made available to them.
