Is notion of a genderless humanity going too far?

We don’t even have pronouns for this.

That’s what accounts for the clumsy grammar of the statement parent Kori Doty issued about Doty’s newborn baby, Searyl Atli Doty. For that matter, it also accounts for the clumsy grammar of the sentence you just read.

Anyway, Kori Doty’s statement read: “It’s up to Searyl to decide how they identify, when they are old enough to develop their own gender identity. I am not going to foreclose that choice based on an arbitrary assignment of gender at birth based on an inspection of their genitals.”

As noted, the English language is not ready for this. For all its splendors, English offers no gender-neutral singular pronoun except “it.” Who wants to be an “it?”

If the language is not ready, well, truth to tell, neither is your humble correspondent. It’s a jarring realization.

Remember When They Arrested George Michael for Being Gay?

In the spring of 1998, the news was on at my mom’s house just like it always was and, in an unexpected twist, Michael’s name was all over the broadcast. A man in an ugly suit was explaining that “George Michaels” (sic) was arrested the day before for committing a “lewd act” — something the man in the ugly suit would not elaborate on — in the public restroom of Will Rogers Memorial Park in Beverly Hills. Immediately confused, I ran to the kitchen to see if my mom had heard the news.

There’s good reason why strong female role models deter other women from aiming for the top

Does every appointment of a female leader need to be a “breakthrough moment” for women? We hear this story endlessly – Jacinda Ardern, prime minister of New Zealand until last January; Sanna Marin, the outgoing prime minister of Finland; and Natalia Gavrili?a, prime minister of Moldova until last February, were all profiled as pathbreakers who would herald a new generation of female politicians. Yet, as women – including British female MPs – limp away from office, demoralised by abuse and succeeded by men, one wonders just how much inspiration their stories offer to younger people.
