Irony: Hate Crimes Surge Against Asian Americans While They Are On The Front Lines Fighting COVID-19
There have been a lot of encouraging stories about peoples’ acts of generosity and kindness during the COVID-19 crisis. Unfortunately, human nature has its bad side too and the crisis has brought out some of our worst qualities including xenophobia, racism and, in some cases, violence.
Hate crimes against Asian Americans and Asian immigrants in the United States have been surging. It has ranged from verbal harassment to denial of services to physical attacks. There is no way to know, but President Trump’s insistence on calling COVID-19 the “China Virus” certainly doesn’t help. It is true that the Chinese government acted abysmally, for example, initially denying that the virus could be transmitted person to person. But China is hardly a democracy and the Chinese people were the victims rather than the perpetrators of this cover-up.
In fact, Asian Americans and Asian Immigrants to the U.S. deserve our thanks for their role in responding to the COVID-19 crisis. First of all, they are vastly over-represented among the front line medical workers who are treating those who have been infected. Seventeen percent of doctors, 9 percent of physician’s assistants and nearly 10 percent of nurses in the United States are of Asian descent.
Tiger King's Joe Exotic Is Not a Good Person, and We Need to Stop Celebrating Him
Netflix's Tiger King has stirred up a lot of feelings on social media, but perhaps the biggest trend of all is the outpouring of celebration and support for disgraced big-cat breeder Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic. Although Maldonado-Passage is currently serving time in prison after being convicted of trying to put a hit out on one of his rivals, plenty of fans have taken his side and elevated him to minor celebrity status. While it's understandable why Maldonado-Passage is able to grab so much attention, it's also important to look closer and realize that this isn't the kind of person we should be celebrating.

Christian group opposes coronavirus vaccine research because it used aborted fetal tissue
The Trump administration’s decision to ban scientific research that uses human fetal cells has not only had a major impact on a potential cure for HIV, now it’s hampering the search for a vaccine for COVID-19.
Evangelical Christian activists, who overwhelmingly support Donald Trump and oppose abortion, pushed the administration to ban the research. Now one group is attacking a potential vaccine for the novel coronavirus and claiming further research would be “morally” irresponsible.
“It is deplorable that anyone would want to exploit the remains of aborted babies for financial profit especially when so many people will refuse to use those products because of their deeply held religious, moral, and pro-life convictions?” Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director of Children of God for Life, asked.
In 2018, a scientist who was supposed to supply mice that have been modified with human fetal tissue for an HIV study emailed researchers that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) “has directed me to discontinue procuring fetal tissue.”
“This effectively stops all of our research to discover a cure for HIV,” he wrote.

Kanye West & Taylor Swift’s “Famous” Phone Call Leaks
The Kanye West/Taylor Swift feud will never die, but you will. Four years later, the full, unedited version of the infamous “Famous” phone call between the two celebs has finally leaked online.
In case you just woke up from a lengthy coma…On Kanye’s The Life Of Pablo track “Famous,” he rapped, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/ Why? I made that bitch famous.” Taylor, understandably, was not happy about that, and said so. Then Kanye’s wife Kim Kardashian claimed that Swift had actually OKed the line during a phone call beforehand and posted an edited video of the conversation in question that seemed to support her side of the story. She, and everyone, started calling Swift a snake.
Swift has always maintained that although yes, the call that launched a thousand snake emojis did indeed take place, Kanye never actually played the full song for her and never told her that he was going to refer to her as “that bitch.” And, well, the new footage that has now emerged pretty much vindicates her.

Tori Spelling apologizes for photo of her daughter dressed up as ‘McQuisha’
Tori Spelling has apologized for an Instagram post many have accused as racist.
In the now-deleted photo posted to Spelling’s Instagram stories, the “Beverly Hills 90210” alum’s daughter, Hattie, 8, could be seen dressed up as a character dubbed “McQuisha,” donning Cheetos as fingernails and wearing a bandana on her head.
Following the post, Twitter users were quick to take Spelling to task.
“Racism takes no days off even during a pandemic,” one user wrote. “why did you think this was ok?!?! Let me guess ‘ignorance’ and ‘you’re so so sorry.’”
Meanwhile, another user wrote: “You’re a racist who tried to be comedic in THIS time ESPECIALLY!”
Vanessa Hudgens calls coronavirus shutdown 'bullshit,' people dying 'inevitable'
And the award for the most insensitive-sounding celebrity reaction to the coronavirus pandemic goes to…Vanessa Hudgens!
The 31-year-old singer and actress gave some thoughts on COVID-19 during an Instagram Live on Monday, and the totally inconvenient social distancing and shutdown steps being undertaken by people and companies nationwide. It's been suggested the disruption could last until July, if not longer.
"Um, yeah, till July sounds like a bunch of bulls—, I'm sorry," said the Spring Breakers star. "It's a virus, I get it, I respect* it, but at the same time, even if everybody gets it, like, yeah, people are going to die, which is terrible, but like… inevitable? I dunno, maybe I shouldn't be doing this right now."
Waka Flocka Flame Says the Coronavirus is 'Fake' and 'Minorities Can't Catch It'
Waka Flocka Flame isn't sweating the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, because he firmly believes minorities can't catch it. In an interview on Real 92.3 LA, Waka talked about his marriage with Tammy Rivera before declaring himself and countless others potentially immune to the virus, despite having no evidence to support that claim.
"It's fake... Minorities can't catch it," he said at the 11:40 mark of the interview when asked if he was worried about it at all. "Name one though," he said when challenged on that comment. "We all descended from the same persons. Now, did we catch it? It hit the people passing through our airport [Atlanta], it ain't touch them soulful folks." He didn't explain himself too much further, or why he believes that he and other minorities are safe, but the conversation quickly moved on after.
The tyranny of woke: How it's fashionable in modern Britain to believe there's no difference between men and women
Imagine a group of time travellers transported from the 1950s to today. The way the world has changed would astonish them.
They would marvel at the technological innovations which have transformed our lives. And they would be amazed by the material prosperity enjoyed by so many.
But they would also be surprised at how much of the old moral framework they knew had disappeared.
For example, they would be startled to learn of the soaring divorce rate and the massive increase in every kind of crime.
They might also be taken aback to find out how obsessed with sex Western society has become.
But of all the changes, nothing would puzzle them more than the preoccupation with what is now known as ‘gender’.
On discovering it was now fashionable to believe that, psychologically and biologically, there is no difference between men and women, our time travellers would stare in open-mouthed disbelief.
Although they would see males and females looking as different from each other as ever – with most people pushing baby buggies being recognisably female and most construction workers recognisably male – were they really to believe these differences were not rooted in nature, but were all just a ‘social construct’, the result of ‘gender stereotyping’?
Chaos at Virginia Legislature After Pastor Recites Antigay Prayer
A minister’s prayer condemning same-sex marriage and abortion caused some members of the Virginia House of Delegates to walk out Tuesday and the speaker of the House to slam her gavel and cut him off.
He told House members that they risked God’s wrath for not following the Bible. He denounced abortion, saying, “All life is precious and worthy of a chance to be born.”
“And why are there so many abortion clinics near African-American communities?” he added. “This is planned urban genocide, and you can change this.”
“Marriage is to join a biological male and a biological female in holy matrimony, not to provoke the Almighty God,” he said. “Without laws to protect traditional marriage, Virginia will be reduced to increased fatherless children and welfare victims and homelessness, a tax burden to us all.”
The Amish Keep to Themselves. And They’re Hiding a Horrifying Secret
The memories come to her in fragments. The bed creaking late at night after one of her brothers snuck into her room and pulled her to the edge of her mattress. Her underwear shoved to the side as his body hovered over hers, one of his feet still on the floor.
Her ripped dresses, the clothespins that bent apart on her apron as another brother grabbed her at dusk by the hogpen after they finished feeding the pigs. Sometimes she’d pry herself free and sprint toward the house, but “they were bigger and stronger,” she says. They usually got what they wanted.
As a child, Sadie* was carefully shielded from outside influences, never allowed to watch TV or listen to pop music or get her learner’s permit. Instead, she attended a one-room Amish schoolhouse and rode a horse and buggy to church—a life designed to be humble and disciplined and godly.

Camila Cabello Shuts Down Body Shamers on Social Media: 'Cellulite Is Normal, Fat Is Normal
Camila Cabello got on social media to celebrate the two-year anniversary of her hit single "Havana" on Saturday (Aug. 3) but found herself sidetracked by messages that were criticizing her body.
The singer responded by penning an empowering letter to all the "young girls growing up in an airbrushed world," reminding them that many of the photos posted online are edited.
"I haven't gone on social media AT ALL with the conscious intention of avoiding things that hurt my feelings, but for a second I forgot while trying to find a pic to post about it being Havana's 2 year anniversary and my eyes accidentally ran over a headline of people body shaming me," she wrote in a note posted to her Instagram stories.
