How the First LGBTQ Mariachi Became an Outlet for Advocacy

What social power does music have? Where does that power come from?

Mariachi musicians Carlos Samaniego and Natalia Melendez found out the hard way—first through discrimination, ridicule and professional blackballing among their musician peers, then via the challenging path of advocating for the acceptance of gay, lesbian and transgender people in the mariachi world.

A 73-year-old Massachusetts man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a 6-year-old child who was trick-or-treating.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., Walpole police were dispatched to a home at 10 David Circle after they received a call of a possible assault on a child. At the scene, the child’s mother told authorities that her son returned to her crying and screaming after he approached the home. The woman said her son claimed the man tried to "beat him up."

Halloween Venue Regrets Hosting 'Swastika Saturday' on the Same Day as the Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting

A Halloween venue in Ohio that held a “Swastika Saturday” the day a gunman opened fire at a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh killing 11 said “we screwed up big time.”

Haunted Hoochie in Pataskala put out a Facebook promotional post that day referring to “Swastika Saturday.” The owner says it’s the traditional last day of the season when some actors paint swastikas on themselves.

Some on social media accused the haunted house attraction of anti-Semitism and Nazism.

Seven people were shot late Sunday evening at nightclub in Southern California, officials said.

The Riverside Police Department received a call around 12:04 a.m. and responded to reports of a shooting inside and outside of Sevilla Nightclub.

Online flyers show the Sevilla Nightclub had advertised a Halloween event called, “The Purge," seemingly in reference to the name of the horror film.

Chick-fil-A sponsoring Pittsburgh kids’ run. But officials, in LGBT solidarity, want deal shot down.

Once word got out last month that Chick-fil-A was the title sponsor for next year’s Kids Marathon in Pittsburgh — a mile race that comes the day before the Pittsburgh Marathon — some folks got upset.

The Post-Gazette reported that all nine city council members signed a letter asking the marathon to trash the deal — one that puts the fast-food franchise’s name on the kids’ race, WESA-FM said.

Warwick Rowers include gay World Cup champ Robbie Manson in new calendar

The Warwick Rowers are including openly gay World Cup champion Robbie Manson in their latest calendar.

The big news here is that Warwick Rowers are welcoming an openly gay world champion to their calendar promotion. The sexual orientation of the individual rowers has almost never been discussed. So the fact that they would welcome a naked gay dude to the photo shoots and calendar says a lot about the actual inclusion of the members of the club.

Big time wrestler Jake Atlas defied his family by jumping out of the closet and into the ring

Name: Jake Atlas, 23

Bio: Mexican-American wrestler Atlas grew up watching pro wrestling with his folks. He spent his childhood in Mexico before coming to Los Angeles as a teen. Both his mom and his dad loved Lucha Libre wrestling–yes, the style of Mexican wrestling that involves wearing the drag of flamboyant masks and uniforms–and took Jake to see numerous matches as a kid.

As he got older, Atlas found himself drawn to cheerleading and gymnastics, though wrestling remained his first love. When he turned 18, he decided to go pro. He trained a full two years before entering his first match.

Will Any Music Awards Show Get Representation For Women Right? None Have Yet.

On last night’s American Music Awards (AMAs), Taylor Swift doubled down on her voter registration message, Ciara and Missy Elliott leveled up, and Aretha Franklin finally got the tribute she deserved. Women were at the forefront of the show, which was a vast step forward from their massive under representation at the Grammys or the MTV VMAs and the number of awards they won was a step up from their Billboard Music Awards treatment. The AMAS did the best job representing women as performers and winners of any music awards show this year. They also showed us how far music has to go to fix its #MeToo and representation issues.

But digging a little deeper, the AMAs also highlight some serious areas that need work. First and foremost, let’s talk about the late XXXTentacion being nominated for two awards, and winning one that was broadcast in the show. Imagine the Golden Globes nominating Roman Polanski (or Woody Allen, or Kevin Spacey, or any number of high profile men accused of sexual misconduct) for an award this year, of all years. Imagine them giving it to him on television. And imagine that later on, when a woman nominated against him lauds his work, saying she’s a fan and it’s an honor to be in the same category as him. That’s essentially what happened with XXX’s win, and Camila Cabello’s subsequent lauding of him in her Best New Artist acceptance speech. XXX, who passed away earlier this year, may have been a talented artist and undoubtedly has legions of fans. But he is also accused of violent, disturbing abuse against a woman. We don’t have to celebrate abusers at our awards show, and to do so only tells women that their pain is not important. It was an especially bitter pill to swallow after weeks of the Kavanaugh confirmation battle. Music seems to think it can continue to exist in a bubble where #MeToo and support for the survivors of abuse are negligible.
