Why racist politics appeals to white women, explained by American history
“What is wrong with white women?” Moira Donegan asked at the Guardian after last week’s midterm elections.
“Why do half of them so consistently vote for Republicans, even as the Republican party morphs into a monstrously ugly organization that is increasingly indistinguishable from a hate group?”
Questions about white women’s allegiances came to the fore again this week, when news broke that a white woman senator facing a runoff in Mississippi had made a joke on the campaign trail about attending a “public hanging.”
Progressives sometimes expect white women, as a group, to support the interests of people of color of all genders — after all, women know what discrimination feels like.
“Most of us continue to see white women through the lens of gender,” explained Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers, a history professor at UC Berkeley and the author of the forthcoming book They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South. “This allows for us to be optimistic about the possibility that their gendered oppression will allow for them to find common cause with other dispossessed groups.”
But that common cause has been elusive.
Wisconsin high school students appear to make Nazi salute in prom photo
A Wisconsin school district is investigating a photo showing a group of high school boys apparently making the Nazi salute. A school official denounced the image on Twitter — and said it would pursue legal actions if necessary.
Baraboo Superintendent Dr. Lori Mueller said she became aware of the photo, which shows over 60 male students dressed in suits with their right arms extended upward, on Monday after it was posted on social media and received immediate backlash.

CNN Sues Trump Over Suspension of Jim Acosta’s WH Credentials
CNN is suing Donald Trump, chief of staff John Kelly, press secretary Sarah Sanders, deputy chief of staff for communications Bill Shine, Secret Service director Joseph Clancy, and the Secret Service officer who took Jim Acosta’s hard pass away in order to have Acosta’s credentials restored.
CNN reports: ‘The lawsuit is a response to the White House’s suspension of Acosta’s press pass, known as a Secret Service “hard pass,” last week. The suit alleges that Acosta and CNN’s First and Fifth Amendment rights are being violated by the ban. The suit is being filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday morning, a CNN spokeswoman confirmed…The six defendants are all named because of their roles in enforcing and announcing Acosta’s suspension.’
Andrew Gillum Shreds Donald Trump With Just 3 Little Words
The winner of Florida’s gubernatorial race is still up in the air, but even if he loses, Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum can take pride in at least one thing: he bested Donald Trump on Twitter.
And he only needed three words to do it.
On Monday, the president argued that the Florida election should be called in favor of Republicans Ron DeSantis and Rick Scott even though doing so would buck the state’s recount procedures.
However, he came out on top with his response to Trump’s conspiratorial tweet.
A student threatened to bomb his high school to ‘cleanse’ it of LGBT kids
A South Carolina teenager has been charged with making a bomb threat against his school and specifically naming LGBTQ students as a target.

“The ultimate cleansing of all anti straight and non Christians will happen to day at 8:10 at James F Byrnes High School,” said one of the tweets, which is no longer publicly available.
Hate Groups Are Using Online Games To Recruit Teens (Report)
Some extremist groups are using multiplayer games and in-game chat functions as a way to recruit new members, NPR reports.
It’s happening not only in-game, but via platforms like Discord and Reddit, as well. Some recruitment occurs during game livestreams on Twitch and YouTube, and even some harassment campaign planning occurs via these platforms.
Unicorn Riot published chat logs from Discord last year which revealed plans for the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rally from white supremacists, according to NPR.
So why are the groups taking to gaming spaces for new members? According to Joan Donovan of Data and Society, a research institute, white supremacists have a history of being innovative with using online spaces for recruitment. And, Donovan says that first-person shooter games are one space to find angry young men, according to NPR.

Inside the Fight to Uncover the Truth About Trump’s Anti-LGBT Crusade
In the wake of an explosive anti-transgender memo leaked from the Department of Health and Human Services and published by the New York Times, LGBT advocates have questions: Who proposed that “sex” be defined by original birth certificate? Was there any pushback? Who, if anyone, was consulted?
But under an administration that has not exactly been forthcoming on LGBT issues, the only way to get answers might be through Freedom of Information Act requests, the Human Rights Campaign says.
