'Christian' Foundation Is Huge Funder of Anti-LGBTQ Hate Groups
The National Christian Foundation, the eighth-largest public charity in the U.S., has been funneling millions of dollars to anti-LGBTQ hate groups, including the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council.
The donations, disclosed in the foundation’s tax filings, were reported today by Sludge, an investigative journalism site.
The foundation is a donor-advised fund. “Such funds offer individual accounts to their clients, allowing clients to get immediate tax breaks on donations to these accounts and to direct NCF to disperse the money to the nonprofits of their choice, mostly churches and other Christian nonprofits, at their own pace,” Sludge reports. “Clients donate through donor-advised funds anonymously, so even the Internal Revenue Service won’t know their identities.”
Its three most recent IRS filings — for 2015 through 2017 — show it dispersed $56.1 million in client funds to organizations designated as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, according to Sludge.

Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin among 50 charged in college admissions scam for unworthy kids, prosecutors say
Hollywood actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin have been charged in a nationwide college-entrance cheating scam, according to federal court records unsealed on Tuesday.
Huffman, Loughlin, and 48 other individuals — including a slew of wealthy executives and attorneys — engaged in “large-scale, elaborate fraud” to create a “rigged system” at elite American universities like Yale, Stanford, USC, and UCLA, according to prosecutors. In some cases, they allegedly used imposters to stand in for the children at exams or bribed athletic recruiters to recruit their children, even if they didn’t end up playing that sport in college.
Federal prosecutors cited one example where parents paid a $400,000 bribe to Yale’s women’s soccer coach so that their daughter could attend the school. She didn't play soccer.
The investigation is ongoing, and more parents and coaches are believed to be involved.
Showtime’s SMILF Canceled Amid Probe of Frankie Shaw’s Misconduct
After two seasons and a campaign to rehabilitate the image of its creator-star, SMILF has been given walking papers at Showtime. The network confirmed that the Frankie Shaw-led series will air the remainder of its Season 2 episodes, but will otherwise shutter production. Shaw herself has had her creative deal with ABC Studios suspended amid an investigation into her conduct.
Additionally, ABC Studios confirmed in its own statement that “Frankie Shaw’s overall deal with ABC Studios has been suspended without pay while we review our options.” The two-year deal was announced last summer, and The Hollywood Reporter notes Showtime was looking to place Shaw behind the camera for a limited series based on Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar.
'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett hit with 16 count felony indictment by grand jury
An Illinois grand jury has indicted "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett on 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report, according to the Cook County State Attorney's Office.
The grand jury returned two separate sets of charges, Robert Foley, a senior advisor in the state attorney's office told ABC News.
The first set is related to what Smollett told officers about the alleged attack, including that the attackers called him racial and homophobic slurs, struck him with their hands, put a noose around his neck, and poured some sort of chemical substance on him.
Russian Lawmaker Says Gays Are 'Sick,' Must Be 'Cured'
A Russian lawmaker who heads a parliamentary committee on family and children affairs has called gays "sick" people who "must be cured."
In a televised interview aired on March 5, Tamara Pletnyova also said that the 19th-century prominent Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky also was gay, "but he always hid it and was ashamed of it."

Why Are So Many LGBTQ Groups Staying Silent About This #MeToo Scandal?
On Monday night, residents of West Hollywood called for John Duran to leave his position on the West Hollywood City Council after weeks of sexual misconduct allegations against him.
It was a deeply sobering moment. The native Angeleno boasts decades of advocacy work for the city’s gay and HIV-positive communities. Duran ceded his position as mayor of West Hollywood on Monday morning, citing health concerns, but this was less momentous than it would appear. The post of mayor is largely ceremonial, rotating each year among members of the council, and Duran has remarked that West Hollywood perceives him to be mayor no matter who holds the seat. He remains on the council, and he has no plans to resign from that post.
Father found guilty of plotting acid attack on 3-year-old son
A father has been found guilty and sentenced to 16 years in prison for plotting an acid attack on his 3-year-old son amid a custody battle with his ex-wife.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted unanimously by a jury Wednesday at Worcester Crown Court in the UK following a six-week trial, the court confirmed to CNN.
The jury, which deliberated for nine hours, convicted the man and five co-conspirators of plotting to spray sulfuric acid in the child's face with the intention to "burn, maim or disfigure."
Jurors were told that the father, 40, a taxi driver from Wolverhampton, central England, but originally from Afghanistan, enlisted the help of his co-conspirators in order to attack his son in a bid to gain increased custody by depicting the child's mother as incapable of providing adequate care, the UK's Press Association agency reported.

White Supremacist Propaganda At 'Record-Setting' Levels, ADL Report Finds
At first, you might not realize the flyer was put there by a white supremacy group.
The poster, in shades of black, white and teal, features Andrew Jackson on horseback. The accompanying text reads: "European roots, American greatness."
Flyers like this, posted across the country by American neo-Nazi and white supremacist group Identity Evropa are popping up far more than they used to. Others feature George Washington. According to a new report by the Anti-Defamation League, white supremacy propaganda increased by 182 percent in 2018 compared with the year before.
The increase in flyers and other propaganda reflects a relatively new strategy for hate groups, the ADL says. Under intense scrutiny, white supremacists are reluctant to show their face in public, so they're relying more on leaflets and posters to spread hate without putting themselves at personal risk, it adds.
California lawmakers accepted $810,000 in gifts and overseas trips in 2018
California lawmakers were showered with more than $810,000 in gifts last year, many from powerful interest groups lobbying the state who handed out concert and professional sports tickets, spa treatments, gourmet dinners and trips to a dozen countries, new state reports show.
The annual economic disclosure reports shed light on how state legislators can augment their annual $110,459 salaries with gifts that allow them to travel the world and eat at expensive restaurants, often in the company of corporate executives seeking to influence their decisions in the Legislature.
“The truth is the vast majority of gifts and trips are given because the gift givers want something in return,” said Rey Lopez-Calderon, executive director of California Common Cause, a government watchdog organization. “It's not just a question of the gift giver wanting something in return, but that the public could infer that even if it's not true. There is potential for the public's faith in government to be undermined.”
PRIEST ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ABUSING MALE CHILD FLEES AMERICA
A priest from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland fled the country last month after he was accused of sexually abusing a male minor.
On January 31, the diocese placed father Alex Castillo on administrative leave upon receiving an allegation against him for inappropriate behavior from a child male victim.
Church officials were able to contact Castillo up until February 21, but after that date, several people were unsuccessful in their attempts to reach the embattled priest, diocese spokesperson Helen Osman told SFGate. The diocese then searched for Castillo in every jail and hospital in the area before they finally reported him missing to authorities two days later, on February 23.
Ariz. 6th-Grade Teacher Allegedly Played a Video in Class and Sexually Molested Boy in Back of Room
More disturbing allegations have been released in the case of Arizona sixth-grade teacher Brittany Zamora, 28, who is accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old student.
Police allege that the former teacher played an educational video during one of her classes, according to newly released documents first obtained by the Arizona Republic. While the video played, police say that Zamora and the alleged victim sexually fondled each other in the back of the classroom.
Police in Maricopa County, Arizona, have released multiple documents, videos and screenshots this week. Much of the evidence allegedly paints Zamora as a young woman who took advantage of her position as a teacher to sexually victimize the boy. In one police interview, the boy allegedly told investigators that the teacher commented on the size of his genitals.

‘It Is Not a Closet. It Is a Cage.’ Gay Catholic Priests Speak Out
Gregory Greiten was 17 years old when the priests organized the game. It was 1982 and he was on a retreat with his classmates from St. Lawrence, a Roman Catholic seminary for teenage boys training to become priests. Leaders asked each boy to rank which he would rather be: burned over 90 percent of his body, paraplegic, or gay.
Each chose to be scorched or paralyzed. Not one uttered the word “gay.” They called the game the Game of Life.
The lesson stuck. Seven years later, he climbed up into his seminary dorm window and dangled one leg over the edge. “I really am gay,” Father Greiten, now a priest near Milwaukee, remembered telling himself for the first time. “It was like a death sentence.”
The closet of the Roman Catholic Church hinges on an impossible contradiction. For years, church leaders have driven gay congregants away in shame and insisted that “homosexual tendencies” are “disordered.” And yet, thousands of the church’s priests are gay.

White customer at Mexican restaurant swears at Spanish-speaking manager
A video showing a white woman swearing at the general manager of a Mexican restaurant in West Virginia for speaking Spanish went viral over the weekend.
“English is our first language, so you need to speak English,” the woman, identified in the video as Jill, screamed at Sergio Budar, the manager. “Get the fuck out of my country.”
One of two videos capturing the incident shows how customers at Tampico Mexican Restaurant in Parkersburg, West Virginia, were astonished at the woman’s remarks.
