The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) has a policy that says a spouse must be married to their partner for at least nine months before they’re eligible to receive a deceased partner’s survivor benefits.
That’s not a problem for most couples, but it is for Michael Ely, a 65-year-old gay Arizona resident. He was denied SSA survivor benefits when his husband of six months died of cancer in 2015.
Ely and his partner Jim Taylor met in 1971 and they stayed together for the next 43 years. But because marriage wasn’t legal in Arizona until October 2014, they couldn’t marry until just before Taylor died.
“We got married as soon as we could, quickly gathering our loved ones together in less than three weeks,” Ely said. “But we were only able to be married for six months before I lost him to cancer.”

Multiple People Accuse Music Producer Hot Sugar of Sexual Assault and 'Toxic' Behavior
Multiple people have come forward to accuse Nick Koenig, a.k.a. music producer and DJ Hot Sugar, of assault and “toxic,” “controlling” behavior.
The accusations, which The Daily Beast’s gender reporter Emily Shugerman described as “a kind of open secret in parts of the music world,” came to light on November 9, thanks to an Instagram account called @realhotsugar. The account—which a anonymous former partner of Koenig’s says she created after she heard alarming allegations from others—began posting anonymous claims of abuse and predatory behavior, along with contextually damning social media posts made by the musician in the past.

Mlyniec had a dirty secret. He would lure troubled young men back to his farmhouse where he would force them to have sex in exchange for food and money.
When his friend, Robert Irvine, got wind of what was going on, Mlyniec panicked. Fearing exposure, he shot Irvine four times in the driveway of his home and called police to confess to the crime.
Mlyniec pled guilty in court this week and Irvine’s friend and family finally got their chance to confront him.

Pharmacist Mitesh Patel is accused of killing his wife and business partner, Jessica. The woman was found dead at their Victorian house in a suburb of Middlesbrough, England, last 14 May.
The 37-year-old denies committing the crime.
