The Problem With the Rap Antihero

Many people can relate to feeling as “lost” as YoungBoy Never Broke Again recently admitted to being on live stream, or like they’re Dying to Live, as Kodak Black expressed on his critically acclaimed 2018 album. They’re two men seemingly bound to the institution of anti-Blackness, whose music grapples with the challenges of becoming more than what racism projected for them. They express the confusion of what it looks like to be a productive member of a society that resents you. In that manner alone, they are relatable figures to many. In a vacuum, their resilience, like that of any artist who defied the odds of systemic oppression, is admirable. But they didn’t get away from poverty without trauma that’s still hurting people. Both men have been accused of committing abuses against women, including Kodak’s open rape case.

We love antiheroes and complicated figures, and can acknowledge the ways in which the system preys on young Black men, but as long as we pretend that their upbringing completely stifles their agency, we allow them to avoid accountability for their actions. To be “complicated” is a patriarchal privilege. When Cardi B or Azealia Banks admit their past misdeeds or act out on social media, they aren’t contextualized; they’re policed.

The Misleading Narrative about Anti-Asian Racism

Findings of this study, however, also provide support to the minority-specific model, which assumes that hate crimes against different racial minority groups are likely to show significant differences. First, the race of offenders differs significantly across hate crimes against Asian Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics. Specifically, hate crimes against Asian Americans are more likely than hate crimes against either African Americans or Hispanics to be committed by non-White offenders. This finding may be attributed to animosity toward the “model minority” from other minority groups.

Two years ago, liberals tried to blame Trump and ‘white supremacists’ for anti-Semitic attacks against Orthodox Jews, predominantly in New York City. Only later did we learn that these crimes were mostly perpetrated by other minorities. The same appears to be occurring now with racial incidents against Asian Americans. In Atlanta, a horrific murder spree was insinuated, without evidence, to be caused by racism. Time and again, we use knee-jerk reactions, instead of evidence and data, to determine the status of racism in our society. It is no wonder that time and again, we scream for solutions, but never see any improvement.

Anti-Asian crime is awful, but ‘white supremacy’ isn’t driving most of it

For one thing, many attacks against Asian Americans clearly aren’t acts of white supremacism or even incidents of racial hatred.

It is an unfortunate feature of big American cities at the moment that not much explanation is needed for attacks against anyone other than a rising tide of lawlessness. That surely accounts for some significant percentage — if by no means all — of the attacks.

The suspect in the killing of Vicha Ratanapakdee — an elderly Thai American who died after being brutally pushed to the ground in broad daylight in San Francisco in January — is a 19-year-old black man.

Mother: White headmaster made Black son kneel during apology

The white headmaster of a New York Catholic school forced an 11-year-old Black student to kneel while apologizing to a teacher and later explained that the punishment was an "African way,” the boy's mother said.

Headmaster John Holian of St. Martin de Porres Marianist school on Long Island was placed on temporary leave after details of the Feb. 25 incident came to light, the Daily News reports.

Jewish groups condemn CNN's Don Lemon for remarks suggesting Black and Brown Jews don't exist

Anti-Semitism awareness organizations are condemning CNN anchor Don Lemon for remarks he made this week suggesting that Black and Brown Jews don't exist.

Lemon appeared on "The View" Tuesday to promote his new book "This Is the Fire: What I Say to My Friends About Racism". During the conversation, Lemon insisted that the nation needs to be "realistic" when speaking about God and The Bible. According to him, that starts by presenting "the true identity of Jesus" as a "Black or Brown person."

'Go to your friends': Black leaders rally around Cuomo

Black voters came out in large numbers for Cuomo in his last two Democratic primaries and remain among his most important and reliable blocs of support. Two polls in recent weeks show Black voters continue to back the governor in large numbers despite his hemorrhaging support among elected Democrats.

A Siena College poll released this week found that 69 percent of Black voters believe Cuomo should not resign, the highest of any of the demographic groups polled, while only 22 percent said he should. That compares to 35 percent who say he should resign among all voters polled, and 41 percent among white voters.

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation has blasted Sunday’s CBS Grammy Awards broadcast, saying it “contributed to the sexual exploitation of women by glamorizing prostitution and stripping.”

Biden tells migrants 'don't come over' in ABC News exclusive interview

President Joe Biden said in an exclusive interview with ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Tuesday that his message to migrants is "Don't come over."

Amid a surge of migrants and unaccompanied minors on the U.S. southern border, Stephanopoulos asked the president, "Do you have to say quite clearly, 'Don't come'?"

"Don't leave your town or city or community," he added.

Increasingly, Facts Are Considered Racist

Cancellation has become so frequent that there’s a tendency to note the latest example perfunctorily and move on, hoping you’re not the next victim.

Last week’s termination of Professor Sandra Sellers of Georgetown Law School bears more than a perfunctory mention. In what she thought was a private conversation with a fellow faculty member after a virtual class, Sellers said, after discussing the performance of a black student in her mediation class:

You know what? I hate to say this, I end up having this angst every semester, that a lot of my lower ones are blacks. It happens almost every semester, and it’s like oh, come on. You know, we get some really good ones but there also are usually some of them that are just plain at the bottom.

Cuomo Allies Try to Turn Sexual Harassment Allegations Into a White Woman Thing

On Monday, New York politics blog PoliticsNY published an exclusive titled “Black Female Ex-Cuomo Employee Questions Sexual Harassment Allegations.” In it, an anonymous Black woman attorney who worked in Cuomo’s executive chamber for several years and a Harlem assemblywoman, Inez Dickens, claim that the accusations against Cuomo are suspicious and politically motivated.

Ironically, this woman has already chosen not to believe women without the help of so-called cancel culture. Both she and Dickens also suggested that accusations by Lindsey Boylan, a former Cuomo staffer who says Cuomo sexually harassed her on several occasions, stem from bitterness.

“I suspect she is angry for him not backing her candidacy, failing to fund her campaign and/or she is trying to get the women’s sympathy vote,” Dickens said.

This attempt from Black women allies of Cuomo to water down this controversy to resentful white women makes a little more sense, however, after reading a statement released on Monday by Debra Katz, the lawyer of Charlotte Bennett, one of Cuomo’s accusers.

A man has been arrested in connection with a brutal attack on an elderly Asian American woman in White Plains, New York, police said Friday.

Nancy Toh, 83, was spit on and punched near the Westchester shopping center on Tuesday, police said. She hit the ground hard enough that she "blacked out momentarily," White Plains police Capt. James Spencer said in a statement.

Toh's face and hip were injured, and she possibly suffered a concussion, he said.
