They did everything right. But after one at-home haircut, a husband and wife died of Covid-19

Mike and Carol Bruno did everything right to avoid Covid-19. They refrained from hosting the big, traditional family gatherings they were used to. They stuck to phone calls and video conferences with family even though they didn't live far away.

But a simple family visit to get a haircut claimed both of their lives.

The Brunos were married nearly six decades before they passed away from the virus, their son Joseph Bruno told CNN. The Chicago couple, who died 10 days apart, are now among the more than 337,000 people who have died from coronavirus in the US.

Bruno hopes his family's grief serves as an important reminder of how easy it can be to contract Covid-19, no matter how safe you are.

Here’s why COVID-19 has a vaccine after 1 year and HIV doesn’t after nearly 40 years

The rapid development of several COVID-19 vaccines has compelled numerous web commenters to accusingly ask why the same hasn’t been done for HIV, a pandemic that has lasted nearly 40 years longer than the coronavirus.

However, a closer look at the different virology of coronavirus and HIV helps explain why the former has a soon-to-be widely available vaccine and the latter doesn’t.

The aforementioned critics often claim that the lack of an HIV vaccine is due to the fact that HIV has most affected men and trans women who have sex with men, Black people, people of color, and intravenous drug users — marginalized people who tend to have less money and political power. Thus, the lack of an HIV vaccine can seem like a conspiratorial way to let these communities die off.

California man 'kills fellow Covid patient with oxygen tank'

Jesse Martinez became upset when the 82-year-old man sharing his hospital room started praying, according to Los Angeles police.

Mr Martinez then allegedly grabbed an oxygen tank and bludgeoned the elderly patient.

The victim died the following day.

The pair, who police say did not know each other, were receiving treatment for coronavirus in a two-person room in Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster in southern California.

Kirk Cameron under fire for hosting large caroling protests as COVID-19 cases surge: 'Unchristian'

Kirk Cameron is facing backlash for hosting mass gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Growing Pains star corralled hundreds of people together on Sunday night to sing Christmas carols outside The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Many attendees were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing, according to Instagram videos posted by Cameron, as COVID-19 cases surge in Southern California and capacity at intensive care units are at dangerously low levels.

“God Bless America!” Cameron captioned one video. “Joy over Fear.”

Charley Pride, Country Music’s First Black Superstar, Dies of COVID-19 at 86

Vocalist Charley Pride, the first modern Black superstar of country music, has died. He was 86.

Public relations firm 2911 Media confirmed that Pride died on Dec. 12 in Dallas, Texas from complications related to COVID-19.

Pride had just been seen by millions on live TV in November as he received a lifetime achievement award from the Country Music Association on its annual telecast. It was on that Nov. 11 telecast that he did his final performance, a duet of his classic “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” with Jimmie Allen, a rising Black star in country who expressed his indebtedness to his predecessor. Pride followed that with a lengthy and heartfelt speech as the small audience of nominees and their guests stood in rapt attention.

All the performers on the CMA Awards telecast were said to have undergone repeated COVID-19 tests prior to appearing, and several dropped out as a result of testing positive. CMA representatives said at the time that none of the performers who tested positive had entered the footprint of the production area for the telecast.

No jab? You're barred! Bars, restaurants, cinemas and sports venues could turn away anyone who hasn't had a Covid-19 vaccine, minister warns

Restaurants, bars and cinemas may turn customers away if they have not had a Covid jab, the new minister for the mass vaccine roll-out suggested tonight.

Nadhim Zahawi indicated that although an injection would be voluntary, some venues – including sports grounds – might insist on proof of one in return for granting entry.

The minister said individuals would have to decide for themselves but would be given the 'strong message' that jabs were good for their family, community and country.

Airlines have already been examining the idea of asking for 'immunity passports' as a condition of flying.

Bill Maher blasts Biden's speechwriter for trying to blame ALL 254,000 COVID deaths on Trump - and says it's actually the fault of the US for being an 'incompetent' country

Bill Maher suggested the United States' staggering number of coronavirus deaths were because its an 'incompetent country' while pushing back against a guest's claim that President Donald Trump was to blame.

Maher then interjected to argue that the United States' coronavirus-related deaths were a result of widespread blundering - not simply President Trump.

'Everybody's incompetent. It wasn't just Trump that led to those deaths,' said Maher. 'He certainly did his part, but we're an incompetent country.'

'That's true,' Meacham, 51, agreed.

'And an unhealthy one,' Maher said.

Gay and bi men are having more sex during the pandemic, despite COVID risk

Gay and bi men in the US had an average of 2.3 more sexual partners at the height of the first wave of the COVID pandemic.

Meanwhile the men reported sharp rises in their levels of binge drinking and drug use.

That’s according to a study by the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities, University of Michigan in the USA. The authors published the study in the AIDS and Behavior journal.

They found only half the men recognized that you could get coronavirus through having sex. But 64% didn’t think they needed to reduce the number of sexual partners.

In fact, most men recognized that kissing is the highest risk for passing on COVID-19 and knew anal sex is comparatively safer.

He noted that while 94% recognized you could pass on the virus through kissing, half believed you couldn’t pass it on through anal sex.

He concluded: ‘If half the gay men in this study were any stupider we’d have to water them once a week.

World War III is now 'a real risk' due to economic damage caused by Covid, UK's military chief warns - as he predicts armies of robots will fight future conflicts

General Sir Nick Carter, the Chief of the Defence Staff, said Britain and the rest of the world would need to 'learn' from history and the international missteps that led to the previous world wars in the last century given the uncertainties caused by Covid-19.

Sir Nick told the Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme there was a worry that the increase in regional conflicts playing out across the world could ramp up into 'a full-blown war', mirroring the run-up to the two world wars in the 20th century when a series of alliances between countries led to years of bloodshed.

The senior official argued that, with the world being 'a very uncertain and anxious place' during the pandemic, there was the possibility 'you could see escalation lead to miscalculation'.

'We have to remember that history might not repeat itself but it has a rhythm and if you look back at the last century, before both world wars, I think it was unarguable that there was escalation which led to the miscalculation which ultimately led to war at a scale we would hopefully never see again,' said Sir Nick.

'If I projected forward another 10 years, I think we should be in no doubt that warfare will look different, there will be robots on our battlefield in future - there already are today,' he added.

Porn Performer Quin Quire Says the Pandemic Isn't Deadly Enough

Lamenting the global pandemic wasn’t “deadly enough” in his opinion, porn performer Quin Quire took to Twitter yesterday to publicly express his desire for a more lethal version of the current virus to make the world a better place.

“It’s good to kill off the weak from a population to ensure the BEST survival for the group,” Quire tweeted yesterday.

Fewer Fistfights, Less Sex—TV Production Gets a Covid Makeover

Just before production resumed in August on the hit CBS police drama “S.W.A.T.,” co-creator and executive producer Shawn Ryan called an infectious-disease expert with one question.

“Are we crazy to be doing this?” Mr. Ryan asked Marissa Baker, a professor at the University of Washington.

Ms. Baker, who specializes in potential exposure to infectious diseases, reassured Mr. Ryan that if the show followed the coronavirus protocols she advocated to protect the cast and crew, it should be fine.

Easier said than done. As Hollywood resumes production in the midst of a pandemic, fear of Covid-19 is changing how television gets made. Producers are avoiding scenes with crowds, guest stars or intimacy between characters, wherever possible. Crew members have backups in case they get sick. Special cameras give the illusion that actors are near each other when they are far apart.

We've basically run the artistic gamut. Restore, colorize, magnify our past glories, celebrate them, cherish them, shape them and make them brand spanking new. To the winner, the spoils. The past will prove to the future shitters that mummy and daddy were right. (A robot may take my soul but I will never become one.) 13-Oct-2020

'I had to find the bravery, emotionally and physically, to just be naked': Finn Wittrock on mental health, nudity and starring Netflix's no.1 show in the world, Ratched

As Ratched becomes the number one show in the world on Netflix, I zoom into Finn’s getaway in a remote farm in New Mexico - having escaped LA with his wife, Sarah and their one and half year-old child – to talk mental health, body image, stereotypes and why talking about childhood trauma is so important…

How have you coped with the lockdownexperience?

It's been hard. I haven't worked since February and it's been like a Groundhog Day experience – every single day is the same. Having a kid is good because it gives me a schedule, which otherwise might be bad for me not to have because I don't know if I would ever go to sleep or ever wake up. But that is also hard because there's no break.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot says she doesn’t expect ‘mass crowds of trick-or-treating’ this Halloween

On what should have been an epic year for Halloween lovers, with the annual celebration of costumes and candy falling on a Saturday, it seems the coronavirus will be playing the final trick on those seeking treats in Chicago.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the city’s looking at how to best celebrate the holiday and doesn’t expect it to look like years past. Lightfoot said the city is working on plans to recognize and celebrate Halloween, but in a way that’s “consistent with the public health guidance.”
