Throne Of Blood (1957) Full Moon

Kurosawa's imagining of Macbeth was intoxicating. He lingered until we felt the character's desperation. The background was still and intimidating. The actors wore silent film faces with impassioned speak. Toshiro Mifune was a beast royale as MacBeth. Isuzu Yamada was fabulously haunting as his Lady. The rustle of her dress, the scary predictions, the make-up and bouts of violent madness. She was a favorite thing. Deaths were choreographed with coherent math and geography. Inspiration is achieved but masterpiece recreation is impossible because the best things in it happened by accident. 28-Mar-2022

Halloween Kills (2021) Arf

Oops. Laurie and Mike are not the brother and sister alluded to in Halloween 2. It was a myth and a modern waste of a great arc. 21-Mar-2022
It assembled an historically amiable and able cast. Laurie Strode wasn't it's focus and I accepted that. There will always be a boogeyman stalking baby breaths and heroes willing to fight to keep them that way. The remembrances are welcome, the music is everything, the recreations worked but the constant reminder of Mike Myer's significance was hokey. The presentation screamed mythology over-identification. Michael Myers craned his neck in sympathy when he watched victims die. He ignored some but not others. It's tacky to make him talk but WTF? Is he a robot? I want to know what he's thinking. Give him voiceover thoughts or grunts. A showdown is brewing between brother and sister. It would be appropriate that before judgment is cast upon him that we get to hear his interpretation. 01-Mar-2022

Humoresque (1946) Howl

Like Batman I focused on a minor detail that should have gotten someone fired and the picture burnt. Ms. Crawford's leg looks beat up. Is it make-up? Is it black nail polish? Did she fall down a flight of stairs? Are those surgery scars? Is that why she's sitting? Was she secretly dirty? It looks awful. 14-Mar-2022
Should you expect payback for endorsing a genius? The film ponders it and applies solutions. John Garfield was born to play broke hot daddies with genius and obsessive compulsions. Joan Crawford always "manned up" to cure them. Ms. Crawford was almost comical until she put on a pair of glasses and blossomed into a bona fide artist. It was classic thespian. The parents' interjection seemed appropriate to the traditions of a hard working family. The family worked to establish a genius and survive. Mama and papa were the mama and papa that lucky children got. Papa looked out while mama cared a lot. Flashbacks were insightful. Ms. Crawford was fashionably tailored to her specifications. The story happens. Oscar Levant was the wisecracking loser that coasted from genius because he failed on his own. He spoke the uncomfortable words the "damned" never listened to because he wasn't "hot." Funny. 04-Mar-2022

Diary Of A Madman (1963) Woof

Hordas are turning confused souls into killers. Hordas are hard to describe. They are ghostly, invisible, well-spoken, manipulating, manly and turn your eyes green before possessing you to avenge their thirst. Vincent Price is a magistrate trying to rehabilitate a killer Horda being legally beheaded because of incriminating evidence. The killer confesses to murder but not being himself. His eyes turn green and threatens a Horda curse. Price fights for his life and accidentally kills him. Price becomes distraught. Things at home are out of place and he's having Venom type conversations with a Horda that lost its home. Counseling convinces him to leave law and punishment and return to sculpting. His first love before his wife and child died. A married goldigger entices Mr. Price to model for him. The bitch that tried to steal Darrin Stephens from Samantha is the model. As soon as she sniffs how affordability can accommodate luxury, her panties wet faster than his clay and her "hot" "poor" husband becomes a blur. The green eye effect is hilarious. It's someone flashing a green light on the actor's eyes and being effective if they never move. They move. They're actors! It's a niche. Gay daddy clinches his part and makes us imagine the rest. "I imagined what kind of gay sex Mr. Price preferred. He definitely smoked like a bandit but I didn't smell much ass action." 16-Feb-2022

War Of The Worlds, The (1953) Woof

God was so angry at us in the 50's that he sent aliens with innovative tech to destroy us. The film details the science and the purpose. Actors are effective. Effects hold up. Its relevance withstands. 26-Nov-2021

Lady Takes A Sailor, The (1949) Howl

Promising businesswoman gets hit by a submarine while sailing. A sunshine spitting mariner reluctantly rescues her. She becomes privy to a super submarine but its captain remains a mystery. Once ashore she galvanizes the press and her business support with the story of her rescue. They think she is lying so they cancel her. Business funding is out, the camera footage proving her truth has been stolen and she's losing followers. Meanwhile, daddy spit sunshine's career is being threatened if the public believes her. It's oneupmanship of a tingly kind, romance of another with two star legends willing to do anything for a laugh and adoration. Eve Arden never hurts. Screwball comedy masters. 06-Sep-2021

Stage Fright (1950) Woof

Killer is setting her lover up to take the blame for her husband's murder. Setup is a tingly nincompoop that obliges the voice of love. Good girl is the bestie with a crush that will find proof to save him. Jane Wyman's talent had me swooning. Alastair Sim was sly and supportive. Richard Todd was psychological. Marlene Dietrich glimmered. Michael Wilding exhilarated. The shots don't disappoint, the puzzle is precise and the whole is enviously entertaining. 06-Sep-2021

Johnny Guitar (1954) Woof

At no point did I strum for Johnny when Joan was the instrument. She cowboy'd up, accomplished some manly maneuvers, looked great, flicked her own and sent the lesbian and her male posse out to the western stratosphere. Pazuzu from "The Exorcist" (Mercedes McCambridge) was the town Karen, interfering in bisexual woman's business by inciting a mob of lawmen to protect the town from unclassified hedonism. Battle ensues as the lesbian pretends she has a soft spot for one of Joan's goons. "Bitch, there's only one man in the room and her name is Joan!" 08-Jul-2021

Primrose Path (1940) Howl

Tomboy receives her first kiss from a Tractor Daddy and it compels her to dress like a lady (tramp) and stalk him. He doesn't want a woman in his life he wants the shy saucy mouthed little girl he met. They marry, manage a cafe and are adorably happy until a family dinner with her family wrecks it. Tomboy's father is of honored intelligence with no job, lots of drink and no hope for a future. The mother is the ex famous beauty on the hill who gave up her dreams to feed her mother, two daughters, lousy husband and herself. Men with money escort them upstairs while the ladies snatch it. Grandma is a tacky invasion and the youngest is a brat spoiled by presents and groceries only an expert mother can bring. Ginger Rogers is swell proving she can do things herself, Joel McCrea is a giant worth looking up for and every character played to our sympathies. Fuck you, parents! 01-May-2021

The lady is introduced to the boy as the butler's "niece." The three go on outings together. Boy likes niece. Boy is having fun. The boy's slip of the tongue tips Mrs. Butler. She plots. Owl And The Pussycat, The (1970) Howl

Lady Barbra plays a hooker with aspirations. George Segal is the bookish wannabe writer whose life she upends. He rats on her for soliciting, she gets evicted and moves in. He inherits a lot of sexual frustration and mental exasperation. Nobody gay bashes like Streisand. (She can bash me all she wants as long as I win her over with my charming personality. That's how you make friends.) She's representing a full fledged character that served the writer well. Why not. If everybody were the same we'd all be Trump. Segal and Streisand are brilliantly funny, introspective, sexy, beautiful and artistic. The words are grand, it flows, we care and it means something. There is a point in your life where you realize that you will never amount to more than what you are. You can at least try to enjoy it with someone in the same boat. 25-Mar-2021

Princess O'Rourke (1943) Howl

Princess that feels like a bird in a cage gets rescued by a pilot when she overdoses on sleeping pills during a flight. The save frees her unto the real world where she suffers from a lack of talent besides waving, dressing fancy and waiting for a royal stallion to impregnate her with boys. The legends are luminous trotting a sound comedy beat and unrolling an escapist romance. The story turns politically dark after the reveal as the man realizes that with a woman in power comes great servitude. 07-Mar-2021

Swiss Family Robinson (1960) Howl

Swiss family travel the high seas to claim new land and eco-trash it. Pirates attack their ship as they sleep, all the passengers jump to safety and nobody bothers to awaken them. Were they not liked? They were probably snooty. TG they left an animal farm, nails and enough ammo to kill an army. Shipwrecked. The Ewoks would have barked at the unrealism of the family tree palace but it's fun Disney magic. As they settle into tranquility the parents ponder the future of their three sons. The boys would inherit nothing without women to love lest they do the animals or worst, each other. A trans boy makes it onto the island and Cain and Abel are awakened to some sexual clarity. It's preposterously gorgeous, impossible, animalistic, adventurous, violent and joyous. 28-Feb-2021

Bedknobs And Broomsticks (1971) Howl

At the age of nine my gay aunt took me to see this film. It was my first time in an American movie theater. Of course mother took me to the theater but it had to be in Spanish and include softcore porn, party music and/or sadistic violence. I saw that shit everyday. I wanted magic.

A witch that needs one last spell to obliterate the Nazis. Awesome education for kids. Show them who the enemy is. Angela Lansbury weaved spells and lulled me soundly to sleep. Charming no-nonsense woman. The spells were clever, the effects maintained the innocence of the time and the magic was reestablished. The writers concocted fairytales from the jumble in kids' heads and made sense of them. The music, the production, the fun and great sportsmanship kept the gift alive. Thank you, auntie. 08-Feb-2021
