Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn (1982)
It's an old friend I had no idea I made. It's everything it pretends to be. 12-Nov-2018
Lost World, The: Jurassic Park (1997)
Beautiful dino and Spielberg rampage. 11-Oct-2018
Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005)
The direction zips amusingly, the performers are at peak charisma and the tricked out bug has a personality. It's bubblegum joy. 01-Aug-2018
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Pockets of beauty, CGI amazement and a score that predates the original. What tears from the pockets is an incompleteness of the human voice and a celebration of what is going to enslave us. 10-Jan-2018
Office Christmas Party (2016)
There are moments where saccharin and fraternity are cast aside to serve impish amusement, like Aniston snapping to a bratter to go fuck herself, but it's mostly underwritten sitcom blather incapable of boosting their TV Q. 23-Dec-2017
Finding Dory (2016)
Pretty, precious and preposterous. 13-Nov-2017
Alien Covenant (2017)
The film spends so much time with exposition and alien history when all we demand is a great "monster mash." The lighting is harsh in creating illusion especially for Fassbender's synthetic. He acts like a robot but doesn't have the sheen of one. There's an attempt to give us a Ripley clone breakout, but she has neither heart, voice or strut kick. It's embarrassing.
The aliens are so CGI crisp that their movements don't transport us to SciFi panic or horror but Jurassic delineation.
Ridley might need to give James a turn in order for the franchise to blow up again. 23-Oct-2017
Alien Resurrection (1997)
It continues, finds a genuine gimmick to bring Ripley back and includes all the elements that made the mythology infamous, yet, at every turn, I felt something missing.
The new incarnation of Ripley is kickass monster of little heart and the movie needed the fire the original stirred.
There are sound action sequences, but the pace could have used a kick and the new alien was laughably sorry. 16-Oct-2017
Cameron is detailed in his respect for what Scott birthed. His take is a well choreographed delineation on military combat. Collusion and honor is placed heroically on each soldier's shoulders and the actors add grit and strut to kindling. Weaver is hoisted higher because she has a mother's rage and because Cameron recognizes what she means to us. 29-Jul-2017
Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)
Alba's gifts have been boxed as Statham stuffs the screen with manly bluster and the director with crafty set-ups and action sequences. It doesn't go beyond what's asked for and that may be enough. 24-Apr-2017
X-Men Apocalypse (2016)
The exhaustion emanating from the series is cemented by this latest episode. The actors are rather inspired to connect with their heroes this go round and Fassbender and especially MacAvoy can convince us but it seems most everyone is just filling an established player's shoes. Oscar Isaac does not cut an imposing figure as Apocalypse. You need the gripping presence of mass and he is established as a character whose heavy boots might give. There are stirring action sequences but the constant exposition establishing where everyone was and should be slows the pace and renders it expensive glass. Maybe if the producers can snatch it from Bryan Singer's tight grip it might get transfused and find art again. 13-Mar-2017
Return of the Seven (1966)
Yul Brynner embodied a man and style beyond his time, could snap into his chaps like the mannequin used to create them and no matter the accent he ingratiated and pumped himself into every occasion with grandstanding eloquence. The movie is so busy bowing down to him that they forget to get on an artistic ladder of support to meet him halfway. He's all alone trying to repeat an earlier success. 08-Nov-2016
Army of Darkness (1992)
It seems to be channeling Xena instead of Evil Dead. Campbell has a pretty face with no qualms about contorting it and letting others abuse it for entertainment intent. Bruce is a funny man with a steady quip drawl yet what Raimi asks of him is incoherent and sublimely silly. The segments that work are the ones that tip a hat to its creation and even though Sam didn't want to recapitulate but reaffirm the series, he chose his decade poorly. Some experimental effects can't stop it from being the odd duck of the trilogy whose only glue is Ash and the man who slays playing him. 02-Nov-2016
Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud (2007)
If you can't improve on the cockeyed monster known as Pumpkinhead, why should I trust that their will be anything left of value. When your go to as an outline is The Hatfields and McCoys with a Romeo & Juliet romance, you better make it so bad that its good again. I don't think that's what happened here and since the makers of this franchise refuse to kill it, I did. 26-Oct-2016
S. Darko (2009)
When you can't comprehend the original material its based on you shouldn't bother. No respect. 26-Oct-2016
