Why do some people stop embracing new music after the age of 28?

Take a moment, dig deep inside and ask yourself: who are your favourite musical artists? Not that buzzy hot new release, or the names you like to drop socially, but your true musical soulmates and desert island discs? The audio comfort blanket you turn to in your darkest days, or the act you’d fly halfway across the world to hear?

I’d happily wager you first encountered this music in your teens, or your early 20s, at a push. The chances you discovered your most treasured tunes after the age of 30 are precisely zilch. Or so says a new study, anyhow, which claims to have identified the exact moment listeners stop embracing new music: 27 years and 11 months. After that, our ears apparently shrivel up and we turn inwards, condemned to an endless repetitive homage to our younger selves. The so-called onset of “musical paralysis” certainly goes a long way to explaining today’s lucrative gold rush of reformed nostalgia tours, anniversary reissues and tribute acts.

The National

I visit and respect classic music but if I had to freeze my palette it would cause a cacophony of emotions that don't reflect or bode well for my present. I prefer forward movement.

(I regress to 27 and 11 months for a little while longer.) 29-Jul-2018

Bono Reveals What He Learned from 'Almost Dying' – and Says 'Music Has Gotten Very Girly'

Bono admits he had previously thought he’d “let go” of his fear of death, but reveals it was the exact opposite.

“I thought I already had, but this was the next installment in trust. You know, people of faith can be very annoying,” he said. “Like when people on the Grammys thank God for a song and you think, “God, that is a shite song. Don’t give God credit for that one – you should take it yourself!” I am sure I have done that myself. And someone’s like, “I got this directly from the mouth of God!” And you’re thinking, “Wow, God has no taste!”

How Janet Jackson changed the conversation on LGBT rights 20 years ago

I’m sorry if this makes you feel old, but it was 20 years ago last month that Jackson released Velvet Rope, an album about intractable longing that showed the singer was still in control — not only of her voice and her brand, but of what was right and wrong.

Just as 1993’s janet. advanced the national conversation about safer sex, so did Velvet Rope help breakthrough taboos surrounding gay issues. The singer calls out homophobes and celebrates gay and lesbian love on the track “Free Xone,” and the reliable tearjerker dance jam “Together Again” goes out to friends Jackson lost to HIV/AIDS.

Queen Of The Underdogs: 5 Reasons Pink Is an Underappreciated Gay Icon

The androgynous star has been a longtime advocate for LGBTQ rights.

Ask any gay bar patron in Hell’s Kitchen or WeHo who their favorite pop diva is and you’re likely to get one of four responses: Madonna, Britney Spears, Beyoncé or Lady Gaga. Older audiences may throw in Cher or Janet Jackson, while youths may stan for Ariana Grande or Rihanna. One thing’s for sure, though: it’s unlikely you’re going to find someone who ranks P!nk as their ultimate diva. But why is that?

Despite all the beef and the sometimes problematic lyrics, the rap game is a whole lot more inclusive than you thought. There are several out and proud gay rappers who are absolutely killing it with diverse, sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant lyrics that you should definitely be vibing along to. From Mykki Blanco to Young M.A, these are artists who deserve your attention and support as they rally for visibility as queer artists and absolutely bangin’ MCs.

Trey Pearson Announces Debut Solo Album & Premieres 'Love Is Love' Lyric Video

Trey Pearson, former singer of Everyday Sunday, famously left the Christian rock scene after coming out as gay last year. Now, he’s gearing up for his first solo album by releasing its title track “Love Is Love” today (fittingly on National Coming Out Day). Billboard is premiering the song’s lyric video.

Sakima's Dirty Pop: Meet Music's New Queer Voice

London artist Sakima was first attracted to a boy when he was 6: “I remember very distinctly a group of girls laughing at me and weirded out that I fancied a guy,” says the electro-R&B musician born Isaac Sakima. Though the feelings weren't reciprocated (“He was straight, as far as I know”), his childhood crush serves as the namesake for the 26-year-old’s Ricky EP (out Oct. 13). Through the seven songs, the singer-producer fetishizes daddies, rejects heteronormative traditions and explores the lexicon of Polari, a coded language used by gay men in Britain in the 1950s and ’60s, when homosexuality was illegal.

Tom Petty used his final tour to show support for the transgender community

It came as a shock to many, as Petty had only recently finished his latest tour, a 40th Anniversary celebration with his band The Heartbreakers.

He had hinted that this may be his last circuit, saying “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was thinking this might be the last big one,” but many believed it to be an empty threat.

Midway through the tour, however, Petty made news for what was seen as a show of support for transgender rights.
