Barb And Star Go To Buena Vista (2021)
Unusually mild comedy about 2 "glue factory" pals realizing they can live life and talk at the same time. Wiig has difficulty transferring her TV magnitude to the big screen but her amiability is intact. McLendon adds bitchiness to her evil. Pretty boy Dornan had me checking for Alzheimer's and wanting earplugs every time his accent veered. The musical numbers fell flat due to lack of training. The only line that made me laugh was about Florida smelling like Red Lobster. The rest was a grab bag of immature silliness. It's not about anything. It's a Sesame Street friendship. 10-Jul-2021
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
So stupid, it's funny. 22-Jun-2021
Ten years have passed since her husband's death. The widow has moved on and is celebrating her engagement to a new beau when it's disrupted by an unnerving 10 year old who shows up and claims he is the spirit of her dead husband. His presence causes family uproar as they try to unmask a poverty-stricken child in love with Lady Nic that claims she shouldn't re-marry. The boy's unflinching demeanor is squirmy as Nic's is artistic. The director shot a continuous pan of Lady Nic giving beautiful stoic face but didn't clinch it with an ironic exclamation. He tried the same trick with the boy on the bench but the boy couldn't sit still. Lauren Bacall established herself. Danny Huston spoke for everyone as the jinxed and insecure groom who wanted to bash "returned husband's" brains out. Lady Nic doesn't unfurl until the end but it's strong. When Anne Heche blew up she exploded fantastically. If someone claims to be a lost loved one, you have to listen, even if it's ludicrous. 03-Jun-2021
East Side West Side (1949)
Tricky dick (James Mason) happily married to a lesbian sophisticate is tempted by the return of his tempestuous alpha lesbian lover. Barbara Stanwyck and Van Heflin have comaraderie and the camera loved Ava Gardner and Cyd Charisse but the crime caper is overdone. The cameos from Fred Mertz as an ironic sober bartender and the best female cocksucker in Hollywood under an assumed name, lend it Pokemon status. The girls were fabulous, the film was okay. 28-May-2021
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Patty Jenkins went on a shopping spree with the film's budget. Did she leave most of it home? It opens with baby Diana discovering clever ways to somersault at the White Female Olympics. She's unbearable, I mean unbeatable even as a child. Cue applause and adoration. There should have been a lot of irony in a woman raised to best everyone, even in goodness. Years of not belonging in the world would have brought her detachment from it. She wouldn't fall apart over Steve Trevor and she definitely wouldn't pine for him for over a 100 years. Compassion is a side effect of a movement. Coldness is a statistic of war. Everything you hate about the movies is in this one. The older maidens are given minimal time. (They didn't study their accents, again.) Cheetah might have been intriguing as a black character with white superiority issues. Yes, make it a race thing. Pedro Pascal left his guts on the floor while Ms. Jenkins took a nap. Steve's explanation for existing in the future was best established on the 70s TV series. Future Steve could have been the great grandson of dead Steve. Incestuous hook-ups and emotional consequences. It would have been a great place to establish personal turmoil. Gadot needed to wear some of the tear in Wonder Woman's battle history to find her strength because it ain't crying.
Patty Jenkins killed Wonder Woman. 14-May-2021

Separate Tables (1958)
The Beauregard Hotel is home to longevity, money, secrets and fraud. Deborah Kerr plays a mousey spinster constantly swooning over a mature army captain (David Niven) full of braggart. Her mother allows her breath but no life. Rita Hayworth is the classy lady of diminishing beauty checking in to recapture her ex-husband before he marries again. The ex-husband is Burt Lancaster, always snarling and whispering sweet nothings in a woman's ear. He is torn between his ex and the hotel manager. Primrose Path (1940)
Tomboy receives her first kiss from a Tractor Daddy and it compels her to dress like a lady (tramp) and stalk him. He doesn't want a woman in his life he wants the shy saucy mouthed little girl he met. They marry, manage a cafe and are adorably happy until a family dinner with her family wrecks it. Tomboy's father is of honored intelligence with no job, lots of drink and no hope for a future. The mother is the ex famous beauty on the hill who gave up her dreams to feed her mother, two daughters, lousy husband and herself. Men with money escort them upstairs while the ladies snatch it. Grandma is a tacky invasion and the youngest is a brat spoiled by presents and groceries only an expert mother can bring. Ginger Rogers was swell proving she can do things herself, Joel McCrea was a giant worth looking up for and every character played to our sympathies. Fuck you, parents! 01-May-2021
Curse Of The Golden Flower, The (2006)
Drop dead gorgeous. That's what I thought at the time I first saw it and its what I affirm now. I devoured and appreciated the crazy amount of artistic work that Zang's imagination and his crew realized. The story was simple and intoxicating. The empress is married to a punishing emperor obsessed with perfection, war and revenge. The empress is mother and stepmother to three boys who are next in line for the crown. Empress is in love with her stepson. He's grown up and doesn't want mama or to be emperor because he's in love with the servant daughter of the doctor that is helping the emperor to secretly poison the empress with enforced medicine. Daddy is back from battle hyped to finish his family war. Traditions are broken, inconsistancy becomes normal, traditions feel like enslavement and people are ready to revolt. Chow Yun-fat knows how to stomp his foot, wield a sword and kill a son. He's intimidating. Gong-Li is that unattainable thing that becomes easy prey once prized and possessed, thrusting her into a vengeful future because she is second in command. She serves gorgeous "Meryl Streep" face.
It's a slow burn to the battle sequences but they are worth it. Action was dressed, mapped and showcased exquisitively and the bloodbath was enervating. Men versus equally matched women with children by their side. Ouch. Amen. 22-Apr-2021
101 Dalmations (1996)
I never saw this movie before. I didn't want to. I thought there would be overacting and lots of talking animal buffoonery. Though the human relationship evolves very quickly, the establishment of Cruella de Ville and adorable puppies are right. The actors were pitch perfect facsimiles of the animated classic and Glenn Close knitted some fabulous bits. The doggies have their own storyline and its realistically sweet and adventurous. Top family entertainment whence you teach the kids how to pick up after themselves or else they sell their pets and turn them into fashion. 20-Apr-2021
Claudelle Inglish (1961)
Farmer's daughter is in full bloom and her scent is driving all the boys/men crazy. The most beautiful boy in the world yanks the flower from its stem, treats her real nice and gets engaged to her before his deployment. Claudelle's mother is the most disgusted wife in America. She loathes the hard work, 20 years of false promises and humiliating poverty. Claudelle's boy may be beautiful but he's a sucker farmer like daddy. Mother wanted better for her daughter. She deserved gifts, pampering and immunity. Girl doesn't care he's poor. She's in love. Daddy agrees. He is a romantic loser who thinks that memories of courting his wife are enough to survive hardship. Beautiful boy spends a year in the army, romantic letters ensue and tragic news upsets her future. The town boys/men pounce. She negates then accepts. Her scent becomes toxic. Every present a reminder of how far she went. Her room was stacked. Dad humiliates himself by allowing his boss to discuss marriage to his daughter without much confrontation. Mother claimed the boss was the reason they were poor but quickly changes her mind when he comes a courting. I'm assuming that Claudelle slept with every father and son in town except for her dad and the Reverend. My mouth was agape at every sharp turn. Claudelle did as mother said and used sex to liberate herself of men because men are victims of promises they can't keep. 20-Apr-2021
What Lies Below (2020)
The fun begins as soon as Trey Tucker parts from the water. Mother has a new boyfriend. He's a Hallmark envelope with extra glue to lick. Mother may be feeling the olds but she's fucking Trey Tucker! Get out! Daughter wants a piece of him too! A character becomes obsessed and another gets killed? No? The film's personality zig zags. The fun ends when the film changes outlook and the feelings it previously drudges up don't get finalized. Our investment goes unacknowledged. It explores beyond what it needed to, in a cruel manner. 10-Apr-2021
Kitty Foyle (1940)
It commences in the 1900s when women were granted equal rights. It jumps to 1940 to show us what that liberation brought. A portrait of a career gal working to ensure her own future whilst getting bumped by her big dude boss. Dennis Morgan's smile was a spit of sunshine in someone else's face. Love is the wrench that loosens the grip on feminism. Daddy Yum Yum deserved attention and Daddy "Not So Bad" (James Craig) played to our sensibilities. One owns money while the other earns it. "You know who" makes her feel things and "you know what" is a dork. The suds get out of hand but the bubbles are fun. If Ginger Rogers had smeared the paint and allowed the character to be sloppy, it would have freed the character further. The film made observant statements about women (you need to earn your own shit), men (women don't need them) and children (are a woman's future.) Independent woman's last choice exonerates her previous overestimations. 10-Apr-2021
Pleasantries are spoiled by disappointments. It parodies all fairytales then drenches them with honey. Wilmer Valderrama is drawn like a long faced witch with big dick attitude and no substance. The brides are Godzilla stupid but the music is nice and the singing is delightful. Long-faced cartoons are not charming. 05-Apr-2021
Owl And The Pussycat, The (1970)
Lady Barbra plays a hooker with aspirations. George Segal is the bookish wannabe writer whose life she upends. He rats on her for soliciting, she gets evicted and moves in. He inherits a lot of sexual frustration and mental exasperation. Nobody gay bashes like Streisand. (She can bash me all she wants as long as I win her over with my charming personality. That's how you make friends.) She's representing a full fledged character that served the writer well. Why not. If everybody were the same we'd all be Trump. Segal and Streisand are brilliantly funny, introspective, sexy, beautiful and artistic. The words are grand, it flows, we care and it means something. There is a point in your life where you realize that you will never amount to more than what you are. You can at least try to enjoy it with someone in the same boat. 25-Mar-2021
