Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969)
Daring to deconstruct the parameters we set in relationships and sex. The foursome glow exploring sexual hypocrisies and reciting the truth no one wants to hear. 24-Mar-2019
Princess And The Frog, The (2009)
It's a sumptuous celebration of black heritage in animation. When the frogs are introduced it hazes the celebration. It becomes more about frogs and less about culture. 21-Mar-2019
Steel Magnolias (1989)
Time grants us a reexamination of art. The cast brilliantly transcribed the written word like it was meant for them. Ross creates a world fantastic that you want to suffer in. 17-Mar-2019
Before Night Falls (2000)
A writer depicting the beauty of life is impaired from enjoying it due to oppressive politics and human tragedy. Schnabel practices skittishly and misses cultural opportunities but punches the story forward. Except for Depp's drag, the cameos resist the film's realism. Antonio is gay function, survivalist and poetically melodious. He sells it...and Martinez doesn't hurt. 09-Mar-2019
I came close to forgiving the mounting horror cliches because the aspect of a troubled marriage being revived by isolation is worth exploration. Everything pertaining to the forest degrades it. 02-Mar-2019
Still Of The Night (1982)
Streep's femme fatale is overly conscious and uncertain. Scheider and Tandy squish brighter but cannot bail out the tepid mystery. 27-Feb-2019
Conan, The Barbarian (1982)
Beauty of body, style, music and hard work. James Earl Jones devours as Arnold embodies. Its parts work better than its whole. 13-Feb-2019
Feminine Touch, The (1941)
Sex war rom com served by master wits (Don Ameche, Rosalind Russell, Van Heflin and Kay Francis.) Ameche and Rosalind defy lack of chemistry but Heflin and Francis uplift the back end. All the woman wants is for her man to grow a pair and punch the howlers sniffing at her door. 06-Feb-2019
A Face In The Crowd (1957)
"Bad News" becomes overnight sensation. Andy keeps his character insufferable, Patricia Neal tastefully shifts from intelligent administrator to emotionally duped and Kazan imprints it with raw emotional tremor. It still reverberates because we still apply the same politics without accepting its downfall. 28-Jan-2019
Devils of Darkness (1965)
The ladies strike, big bad twirls and the rest is Hitchcock bargain basement. Our parents partied wild. 26-Jan-2019
Period of Adjustment (1962)
The utters of Fonda and Hutton chanted high. Tony Franciosa kept the octaves low and his charisma forward. John McGiver sets and Mabel Albertson resists becoming the in-law stereotype. They glorified it. Lois Nettleton steals it because she could.
Marriage is deemed a terror, everyone screams their heads off until a surprise gift changes it. It has a loud message but you can still hear it.
Unfortunately, George Roy Hill's absurdity didn't allow Tennessee to be tragic. It's what the writer did best. 03-Jan-2019
Naughty or Nice (1939)
A gifted songwriter can only love when he's drunk. The maid is named Killer and the actors add snap to their wit. It's gay vintage. 29-Dec-2018
Who Gets The Dog? (2016)
You stay for the dog. 26-Dec-2018
Holiday Affair (1949)
A sober Christmas treatise made with no fuss.
It was a forward example.
The Christmas gift was an alpha. 25-Dec-2018
Mathilda May is other world perfection. The story is complete, the make-up impresses and the Brits exalt conspiracy authority. By end, the filmmakers are overcompensating and padding the screen with extras when all we want to see is daddy tackling the destructive seduction of the ideal woman he created. 23-Nov-2018
