House of Flowers (2018)
S3. They smeared dark paint and punched holes into what could have been a masterpiece. Everything we cherished was punished, everything celebrated, got cursed and everything funny, nagged. The backstory was a cheap attempt to keep us interested in the life of a woman that presently doesn't exist. It's hurtful and pointless. Everything gay has become annoyance and everything Paulina De La Mora has been shredded. The only thing left is the frame. 29-May-2020

Miracle Worker, The (1962)
Wild child with disabilities gets reformed by teacher whose demons compel her to impart self reliance. The film's effectiveness relies on protagonist nerve and muscle. Duke and Bancroft, not only slap it, punch it and break it they receive it, just as well. The psychology was that a child that inflicts pain must undergo it to better understand their crime. All the parental rules we dethroned, helped erect the special intelligence of an unidentified child. At end of story, the combatants celebrate the characters and, I hope, each other for a job well-done.
Dead To Me (2019-)
All coincidences aside, its power resonated from the word, the emotion and the performance. Ms. Applegate rocketed to combustion. Good job. 20-May-2020

Chosen Ones, The (2015)
Conning underage girls into sex trafficking by boys/men realizing the fairy tale expectations that mothers inculcate. The subject is severe but the director does not exploit it. He keeps it creative with unseen cuts and human sounds that make the heart race. The heroes are also victims of an establishment that will never recognize a woman's purpose and therefore are powerless to do anything but abet the enemy or become one. Real and disturbing. 20-May-2020
Wicker Man, The (1973)
Christian copper investigates missing child on pagan island. Edward Woodward keeps it desperate and unleashing, the atmosphere is lawless and unethical and the music lilts as well as unsettle. The horror isn't physically evident but mentally, it sticks like gum to a shoe. 19-May-2020
Dangerous Lies (2020)
A windfall may or may not kill you. The beat (director) was persuasive, the concoction (writing) was unique, the conclusion was a letdown but I admired a lot of it. Camila Mendes was level and engaging. Jessie T. Usher was reckless asshole sublime and proud of it. 18-May-2020
Daughter of Shanghai (1937)
Smuggling asians to America for slave labor. It's big on gumption because the makers gambled on a "good eye". There is a jolt of celebration in seeing ourselves being portrayed in a prohibitive era. The film is incomplete, scarcely budgeted and cold in character development. It's not its fault. What blesses it, is Anna May Wong's illumination and a supporting cast that kept it burning. Third Day, The (1965)
Can a man become an enlightened human if an accident causes him amnesia? Not if your mug is still wanted for murder.
George Peppard is grand business daddy, never demurring from blankness while still eliciting great face.
Elizabeth Ashley was privileged bitch wife, with an redemptive opportunity for love and a zestful beauty of another.
Sally Kellerman knew how to turn it on and shut men down.
Mona Washbourne elicited comic wit relief and parental heartbreak.
Roddy McDowell. The best cocksucker in Hollywood actually had other talents.
Arte Johnson crept trying to put a creepy face on a "love me" persona.
Music. It sounded like every summer blockbuster score rolled into one.

Its undoing is its failure to convince us why the robots have so much human emotion. If you can't digitally master it, our brains will not conceive it.
Its spite and success is due to a brilliant presentation, staggering mamas and devastating daddies.
Wood gives Dolores the stature of uniqueness and the stoic elegance necessary to keep her fascinating but it's time for her to get her machine on.
Ed Harris. Daddy cowboy of legend. Gives great face, looks fun in bed and he's a cowboy.
Jeffrey Wright. This is the daddy you get high with. Great ideas and crazy sex.
Thandie Newton. Her act is fit and she'd be the action-figure I would buy if I was twelve.
Luke Hemsworth. A Hemsworth pillow. He's a snuggle daddy with survival skills.
Tessa Thompson. Proud to have her on any team.
Aaron Paul. Delicate daddy with violent tendencies and dedication or Next Door Daddy.
Vincent Cassell. Daddy, "yeah, I'd fuck him."
The fight scenes enlivened, real robots ignited and the future looked bright. (We'll see how they fuck it up.)

A psychology whose study is based at its present moment. Dafoe arghs and puffs with superiority and a seasoning of humanity. Pattinson is learning, maturing and blowing things up. A beautiful coupling. 03-May-2020
Bad Education (2020)
The face of the righteous has a melting soul.
Hugh is big daddy, fulfilling a demanding feat. He teases us with his nice boy swag, making us feel comfortable, ripping layers and gnawing at his mentality. He floors like a man realizing his obsession is a sick heart aching for love of any kind.
Janney's gift is to steal acts, to be good or to be great. She is all.
Ray Romano is the grand daddy of kvetch, owning it with common sense and delivering it like a real person.
Geraldine Viswanathan displayed the smarts and determination the character needed.
The support was a menage of cultural brilliance.
Awkward, tricky and... bam!

Extracting a drug lord's boy from the violent clutches of a challenger. Hemsworth is action God with minimal words and a gumption for despair. The writers downplay bravado and sap, injecting touches of humanity and observation to their characters. Director Sam Hargrave meticulously choreographs masterful action, cultural deficiency and human interaction. I was as enervated by the colossal statements as the small. The testosterone shot the action genre sorely needed. 30-Apr-2020
Others, The (2001)
Children and the help, quarantined with a compulsive mother obsessed with the idea of being as great as God. It's made of Hitchcock walls, star quality is legend of old and the understated score unnerves. It's refined spookery. Nic is powerhouse mama alleviator and authoritarian, putting the kids sweetly to bed, one minute and wanting to chop their heads off, the next. The ending is ruined once you know it but the lesson still rings true. Nothing ever is as it seems. 27-Apr-2020
Black Widow (1954)
Befriending pretty young things is bad for a man's health and his marriage. Van Heflin is joy of talent, uncoiling his anger at every surprise turn and thrashing women like an equal. Gene Tierney upholds the confused and doting wife, Peggy Ann Garner adds vulnerability to her con and Ginger Rogers sparkles as an empowered success story, dethroning men and failing at everything except bravado. People ponder with intelligence, the crime keeps flooding and the bitchfest hums. 23-Apr-2020
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Washington ached, Witherspoon gutted, daddy Jacks wrecked and the children revolted. The writing did not relinquish the exasperation caused by raising a family by impossible standards. Blanching racism with hypocritical correctness does not a solution create. The most difficult job on the planet is being a mother because every mistake, detracts years of happiness from their children's future. Good job. 22-Apr-2020

Reese's contentious rejection of her daughter's sexuality induced audience shudders of deviant delight.
Kerry Washington held her own with her child confrontation and then exploded into Olivia Pope during her court scene. Nice.

A young Mia and Elena are introduced with a backstory strong enough to hold its present walls. Young Elena struggles to convey Reese but only because young Reese has been downloaded to our memory banks. Young Mia is studious, observant, respectful and an uncanny joy because she's a pitch and tic perfect Kerry Washington that elicits the heart that older Mia lost. Writing was solid. 09-Apr-2020
A mama cold war, a class distinction an intellectual race riot. It theorizes that women only need to act like a mother to push the children through life. It states that racism's hypocrisy, sensitivity and overreaction will never mend it. The children are at a loss serving as parental investments of an unsettled future while practicing what they learn from them as much as what they hate.
Kerry Washington threw her TVQ out the window to portray a most questionable mother with a permanent scowl on her face, a confrontational outlook and some sort of mental instability. Witherspoon is the mother whose charity she thinks will excuse her parental ditto. She peels enough layers to inform us that she rationalizes that racism is wrong but the safety of her family comes first.
The baby drama is the new focal point and it may be its drawback. The coincidence was grand and mama Mia had no business offering a co-worker, who abandoned her baby, money that would have been better suited for her own daughter. It makes her hard to like.
