Patrons of California shop buy doughnuts by the dozen to give owner time with wife

Ever since patrons and community members found out in mid-October that Stella Chhan was ill, they have been arriving at Donut City in Seal Beach, south of Los Angeles, to buy donuts by the dozen. The intent is to allow John Chhan to close his Southern California shop early each day so he can spend time with Stella, his wife.

7 shot at California nightclub during Halloween event dubbed 'The Purge'

Seven people were shot late Sunday evening at nightclub in Southern California, officials said.

The Riverside Police Department received a call around 12:04 a.m. and responded to reports of a shooting inside and outside of Sevilla Nightclub.

Online flyers show the Sevilla Nightclub had advertised a Halloween event called, “The Purge," seemingly in reference to the name of the horror film.

Will Any Music Awards Show Get Representation For Women Right? None Have Yet.

On last night’s American Music Awards (AMAs), Taylor Swift doubled down on her voter registration message, Ciara and Missy Elliott leveled up, and Aretha Franklin finally got the tribute she deserved. Women were at the forefront of the show, which was a vast step forward from their massive under representation at the Grammys or the MTV VMAs and the number of awards they won was a step up from their Billboard Music Awards treatment. The AMAS did the best job representing women as performers and winners of any music awards show this year. They also showed us how far music has to go to fix its #MeToo and representation issues.

But digging a little deeper, the AMAs also highlight some serious areas that need work. First and foremost, let’s talk about the late XXXTentacion being nominated for two awards, and winning one that was broadcast in the show. Imagine the Golden Globes nominating Roman Polanski (or Woody Allen, or Kevin Spacey, or any number of high profile men accused of sexual misconduct) for an award this year, of all years. Imagine them giving it to him on television. And imagine that later on, when a woman nominated against him lauds his work, saying she’s a fan and it’s an honor to be in the same category as him. That’s essentially what happened with XXX’s win, and Camila Cabello’s subsequent lauding of him in her Best New Artist acceptance speech. XXX, who passed away earlier this year, may have been a talented artist and undoubtedly has legions of fans. But he is also accused of violent, disturbing abuse against a woman. We don’t have to celebrate abusers at our awards show, and to do so only tells women that their pain is not important. It was an especially bitter pill to swallow after weeks of the Kavanaugh confirmation battle. Music seems to think it can continue to exist in a bubble where #MeToo and support for the survivors of abuse are negligible.

Insufferable gay Trump supporter hurls racial slurs at Lyft driver, refuses to leave vehicle

Shawn Pepas Lettman is a Lyft driver and father of two from Brooklyn. Last weekend, he found himself the target of a racist attack by gay Trump supporter who refused to get out of his car.

It all started when a passenger leaving a gay club requested Lettman change the music in his car. Lettman declined the request and the passenger became irate, prompting Lettman to pull over.

In the video, the passenger can be seen screaming into his phone at Lyft customer service, hurling racial slurs at Lettman, making offensive threats, and refusing to get out of the car until he is refunded his $8.01 for the ride and police arrive so he can file a report.

Christian NCAA member Azusa Pacific bans all same-sex relationships

Azusa Pacific University, an NCAA Division II school with ties to the Christian church, has reinstated a previously suspended ban on same-sex relationships, sending LGBTQ students, student-athletes, members of the administration and advocates scrambling.

The school’s Board of Trustees late last week sent a notice returning the school’s policy to say “Students may not engage in a romanticized same-sex relationship.”

Some Christians have long held that the Bible bans sex between people of the same gender. This policy goes even further, banning all romantic same-sex relationships, even those that don’t include sex. The school’s policy already bans sex outside of wedlock, this policy simply specifically targets gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and queer people.

God has yet to weigh in on the decision.

Largest Ohio Catholic diocese to expand abusive priests list

Ohio's largest Roman Catholic diocese will join three other dioceses in the state and release a list of priests who have been removed from their posts because of sexual abuse and misconduct allegations.

The Diocese of Cleveland's list will include the names of abusive priests, even if they are now dead, church officials said Tuesday.

The diocese since 2002 has been announcing the names of clerics removed from ministry because of sex abuse allegations, said diocesan spokesman Jim Armstrong. Its website includes 29 names, with some of the allegations going back decades.

"It would be wrong to suggest that the Diocese of Cleveland has not committed to release the names of clerics accused of sexually abusing a minor or that it desires to keep secret the names of such clerics," Armstrong said.

Manager of NYC’s ‘Monster’ Gay Bar Resigns in Wake of Racist Text Uproar

Yesterday we reported that Honey Davenport, a drag queen who performs at the Monster gay bar, an iconic nightclub in NYC’s Greenwich Village, walked out on Saturday night after revealing that she had seen a text exchange in which the bar manager Italo Lopez had told DJ/producer Mitch Ferrino to revise flyers he had produced for the club’s party “Manster” because it looked like they were promoting “black night” and that would be bad for business.

Trump Engaged In ‘Outright Fraud’ To Help Family Save Hundreds Of Millions In Taxes: NYT

U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in tax schemes that included cases of outright fraud in which he and his siblings helped their parents dodge taxes, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The Times investigation, which a Trump lawyer said was inaccurate, showed Trump received the equivalent today of at least $413 million from his father’s real estate business, citing a “vast trove” of confidential tax return and financial records.

The Times reported that much of that fortune came to Trump because he helped his parents evade taxes, setting up a fake corporation with his siblings to disguise millions of dollars in gifts from their parents.

During his presidential campaign, Trump promoted himself as a self-made real estate mogul who started out with only a “very small” loan from his businessman father, Fred Trump.”

$35 million sex-abuse verdict puts spotlight on insular Jehovah's Witness community

A jury ruling this week that the Jehovah's Witnesses must pay $35 million to a woman who says the church covered up her childhood sexual abuse puts a rare public spotlight on the normally insular religious organization, experts say.

The penalty, handed down by a Montana jury on Wednesday, will go to a 21-year-old woman who accused the Jehovah's Witnesses' national organization of telling local clergy members not to report her abuser, a relative who she and another woman say molested them and a third family member. The church plans to appeal.

The Catholic Church Is Rich Enough to Settle Sex Abuse Cases Forever

It sometimes seems as if you could rattle off a list of Catholic sex abuse scandals in perpetuity. The pope, for his part, has barely responded outside of summoning the world's bishops to the Vatican for a meeting this winter to discuss the ongoing crisis.

Considering the unlikelihood of criminal consequences for those at the clergy's top levels, and the fact that many of these sex abuse cases have far surpassed the statutes of limitations, the endgame seems increasingly a financial—that is, a civil liability—question. But can the Church settle with survivors forever? Will it ever, somehow, completely run out of money with which to do so? In settling sex abuse claims, the Church has already reportedly spent or agreed to spend at least $3 billion in the US alone, and about 20 American dioceses have filed for some kind of bankruptcy. There's little evidence that will slow down, or that the price tag won't keep climbing. (In Pennsylvania, for example, bishops said they supported a fund to compensate survivors if they could prove they were abused but, because of the statute of limitations in the state, could no longer file a lawsuit.)
