More than 80 women sue San Diego hospital alleging secret camera recordings

More than 80 women have filed a lawsuit against Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa alleging they were secretly recorded while undergoing medical procedures in labor and delivery operating rooms.

Patients were filmed without their consent in three private rooms from July 2012 to June 2013, according to the lawsuit filed last week in San Diego County Superior Court. The women allege hidden cameras filmed approximately 1,800 patients undergoing medical procedures — including births, dilatation and curettage to resolve miscarriages, and hysterectomies.

Engineer, David Xu, accused of poisoning colleague's food and water

A California engineer accused of trying to poison his co-worker by spiking her food and water for more than a year was arrested and charged with attempted murder last week.

David Xu, an engineer at Berkeley Engineering and Research Inc., a consulting firm, is accused of adding the poisonous metal cadmium to co-worker Rong Yuan's food and water starting in October 2017, according to court documents filed in Alameda County last week. He kept trying to poison her through March of this year, the documents said.

For months, Yuan noticed that food and water she left unattended in her office had a strange taste and smell, the documents filed Thursday said.

She "reported suffering immediate and significant health problems after consuming this water and food, at times requiring emergency care at a hospital," the court filing said.

Arizona police officers forcibly removed 2-year-old boy with fever from home, video shows

An Arizona lawmaker is questioning a local police department's use of force in removing a feverish child from a home after a doctor reported the parents to the state's Department of Child Safety.

On Feb. 25, the mother of a 2-year-old child, who is not vaccinated, took the child to a naturopathic doctor with a fever of 105 degrees, ABC Phoenix station KNXV reported.

The doctor instructed the mother to take the toddler to the emergency room as soon as possible, but since the child's fever later broke, she took him back to their home in Chandler, about 25 miles southeast of Phoenix, instead, according to a statement from the Chandler Police Department.

When the doctor learned from the Cardon Children's Hospital that they parents never showed up with the child, she called Arizona DCS, who then contacted the Chandler Police Department for assistance, an incident report shows.

Transgender man claims Catholic hospital refused to perform a hysterectomy on him. Now, he’s suing.

A transgender man has filed a lawsuit against a Catholic hospital for refusing to perform a hysterectomy on him for religious reasons, Newsweek reported.

The lawsuit filed Thursday by the American Civil Liberties Union claims that St. Joseph Hospital in California discriminated against Oliver Knight because he is transgender.

"The refusal of St. Joseph to allow a doctor to perform a medically necessary procedure because the patient is transgender is discriminatory," Jessica Riggin, a lawyer who is representing Knight, said in a statement. "This is a hospital that is open to the general public so even though it's religiously affiliated, it's illegal for them to turn away someone based on gender identity. Everyone should be able to get the care they need."

Illinois lawmaker introduces bill to punish doctors for providing health care to trans people

An new bill in Illinois bill would punish doctors for providing transgender youth with any transition-related health care.

Rep. Tom Morrison’s (R) bill, the Youth Health Prevention Act, would prevent doctors from giving hormone prescriptions, providing transition-related surgeries, or even referring trans youth to another doctor for transition-related health care. If a doctor does, it’ll be considered “unprofessional conduct” subject to discipline, and they could have their license suspended or revoked.

The parking lot suicides
Veterans are taking their own lives on VA hospital campuses, a desperate form of protest against a system that they feel hasn’t helped them.

Alissa Harrington took an audible breath as she slid open a closet door deep in her home office. This is where she displays what’s too painful, too raw to keep out in the open.

Framed photos of her younger brother, Justin Miller, a 33-year-old Marine Corps trumpet player and Iraq veteran. Blood-spattered safety glasses recovered from the snow-covered Nissan Frontier truck where his body was found. A phone filled with the last text messages from his father: “We love you. We miss you. Come home.”

Miller was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidal thoughts when he checked into the Minneapolis Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in February 2018. After spending four days in the mental-health unit, Miller walked to his truck in VA’s parking lot and shot himself in the very place he went to find help.

“The fact that my brother, Justin, never left the VA parking lot — it’s infuriating,” said Harrington, 37. “He did the right thing; he went in for help. I just can’t get my head around it.”

A randy man has told how he heard a loud crack while he was having sex when his penis snapped in half.

He writhed around in excruciating pain while his bent penis swelled up with blood until it was the “size of a bottle of wine.”

Two men convicted in teen's deadly allergic reaction to takeout

A former restaurant owner and an employee were found guilty of manslaughter Friday in the death of a British teen who suffered an allergic reaction to takeout from the eatery.

Megan Lee, 15, who was severely allergic to peanuts, died on New Year's Day 2017 — two days after eating a meal of onion bhaji, a seekh kebab and a Peshwari naan from the Royal Spice Indian restaurant in Hyden, Lancashire, England.

None of the items were supposed to contain nuts.

Thousands of people are seeking help after being forced into ‘ex-gay therapy’

In December 2014, a tractor-trailer traveling down Interstate 71 in Ohio struck and killed Leelah Alcorn.

Alcorn, who identified as transgender, had posted a suicide note on her Tumblr in which she described her isolation, desperation, and depression—feelings she blamed, in part, on the “conversion therapy” her conservative Christian parents forced her to undergo. Alcorn’s parents believed their “sick” child could be forcibly turned back into a boy and “cured” of her attraction to males.

Culture, Not PrEP, Linked with Nationwide Rise of STIs in Gay/Bi Men

A new study from UCLA's Williams Institute may have found a new reason why STI's are on the rise among gay and bisexual men in the United States.

While some hypothesized that the STI rise could be linked to the use of PrEP, the drug for preventive HIV treatment, the report shows that's not the case.

"Our data don’t support the idea that we can attribute the rise in STIs to PrEP use, at least not in a direct manner. I personally don’t think that’s what’s happening," Professor Phillip Hammack, the study’s lead author, told Los Angeles Blade. Hammack believes there is a “culture shift about sex.”

Brad Pitt built dozens of homes in New Orleans after Katrina. Now they're falling apart and residents are suing.

Kamaria Allen had no plans to return to the Lower 9th Ward after losing everything in Hurricane Katrina. But then she saw the new houses.

Billed as flood-safe and futuristic, the Make It Right homes towered over vacant lots in pops of teal, lemon and lavender. Houses like that just didn’t exist in the working-class, mostly black section of New Orleans that Allen’s family had called home for four generations — and definitely not for $130,000.

“I called it my Mardi Gras float,” Allen says of 1826 Reynes Street, the roof deck-topped home that now sits abandoned — mushrooms growing from its split siding, wooden boards propping up its sagging roof. Allen bought the house in 2011 from the Make It Right Foundation, a charity formed by Brad Pitt to help Lower 9th Ward residents return home after the hurricane.

Mom Fights Back After Nurse Body Shames Her 13-Year-Old Daughter: 'She Is Ignorant'

Julie Venn is teaching her daughters that “strong is beautiful, and weight means nothing” — so she was frustrated when a nurse body shamed her 13-year-old during her yearly checkup.

The personal trainer and mom of two went into the appointment excited to see how much her younger daughter, Riley, had grown in the past year.

“The coach in me has loved seeing her strength and size finally come along and the mom in me has loved watching this beautiful young girl begin to become a young woman,” Venn, 48, wrote in a Facebook post.

But when the nurse practitioner came into the room, Venn said that she immediately started questioning Riley — who plays softball and basketball — about her diet, exercise, sleep habits and school, before asking, “Tell me Riley, how can you explain all of this weight you’ve gained?”

BURT REYNOLDS
LIVED OUT LAST DAYS ON FAMED ESTATE
... Thanks to Loving Landlord

Burt Reynolds was able to live out his final years at his longtime Florida estate thanks to a loving landlord who helped him out of a financial crisis.

Here's the backstory -- Burt sold his home in 2015 to his friend and neighbor Charles Modica after years of money woes and a decade-long struggle to unload it, but Charles allowed him to stay there for the rest of his life ... similar to Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.
