Bittersweet Love (1976) Arf

They dealt with incest by sudsing, name dropping and securing an actress of "natural" superiority. Points were made and evaluations considered. Celeste Holm didn't waste her legend, the compassion was still in her eyes. 07-Jun-2018

Wild Oats (2016) Woof

It's an exercise for supreme legends to exert acting muscle and add elegant effervescence to maturity. 16-Feb-2018

Boulevard (2014) Woof

It emphasizes how gullible and unprotected we are when we halt truth until late in life. The trip isn't easy or comfortable and Robin's lingering sadness only intensifies it. Kathy Baker assists beautifully when allowed. 16-Jan-2018

Dreamboat (2017) Woof

We party like children, we fuck like it’s historically relevant and we crash in tragedy.

The titillation dissipates as soon as these diverse and brave men lament in a society hellbent on cementing themselves to a merry-go-round that hasn't gotten us anywhere.

They grabbed me. 10-Dec-2017

Whales of August, The (1987) Woof

Legends are tasked with breathing life into characters that are mostly nostalgic and withering. Its not an easy ride because we are saddened by the resolution of a star's stellar life. Since motion is an enemy, the words could have been kicked up to make up for it, but by end their candle will flash a little sweetness before it becomes extinguished. 17-May-2017

Kiss Me, Stupid (1964) Whimper

One word in the title professes what this hopped up and squat sitcom is. Dean Martin plays a faux version of the many Dino personas he created via his Rat Pack ties. He's star credited with guest star appeal that he seems suitably comfortable with. I was surprised how little dignity Billy Wilder had for character, women or principality. Ray Walston is saddled with being forefront, unsympathetic and manic while Kim Novak coaxes a Joan Rivers inflection to portray a hooker. It's offputting because it doesn't resemble her persona but by end her star has allowed us inside the character's soul that we can accept it. The comedy relies heavily on the premise that women are owned and subservient, to be shared with other men for the betterment of marriage, all men and pursuit of happiness. Wilder moves it at a cartoon pace which most of the support called home. 05-Apr-2017

Don't Breathe (2016) Arf

Stephen Lang cuts a menacing figure. The movie bathes in the glow of newness and distraction for half of its run as it refuses to end or let anyone die. It splinters the welcome as it limits its nerve and there is no one to root for. The ending should have been more ironic and slamming. Someone should have carried the burden of a killer's child. 28-Mar-2017

Catered Affair, The (1956) Full Moon

It takes a few scenes before you get accustomed to Bette's accent but once it happens you are converted and transported by an actress who rarely took anything for granted and whose talent was just as big as her persona. Debbie Reynolds sparkles beautifully as the conflicted daughter and Borgnine epitomizes the tired working man of his era. The script keeps the action minimal and the truth scathing whilst Richard Brooks gives us the setting then points his camera towards the actors who make the story gust. It has become a past delicacy that is now a new favorite. 24-Mar-2017

Towering Inferno, The (1974) Arf

The movie has its place in history and I remembered it as it was perceived for its time. Unfortunately, technology does not allow for the tweaking of effects that would provide the present with resonance. Had it not relied so heavily on its tricks it might have thrilled but all I can see is the hard work, I can no longer feel it. Its only power is gazing at an abundance of stars some of which fare, others which just beg. Faye Dunaway who spends a lot of time licking on Paul Newman, predates Mommie Dearest but still acts like Joan Crawford which makes you question if her Joan was a revelation or was she always swiping from her? Of the two Alpha blondes, Steve and Paul, MacQueen proves that only his gets fondly yanked. 12-Mar-2017

Cocoon: The Return (1988) Whimper

They still can't get it right. Just because they are largely casing lives of elders doesn't mean the pacing has to be so slow. The only hearty moments come from the pros constant outreach. The production constantly lets them down and the aliens are still undisturbingly dizzy. 02-Feb-2017

Cocoon (1985) Whimper

The idea is worthy of exploration but Howard has no interest in inflicting it with personality. His direction is slow and clammed up like the cocoons laying at the bottom of the pool. It's up to the old timers to ratchet the drama and corral the sentiment. The aliens are stifled, Tinker Bell inspired and pending. Howard does nothing to propel any of the interesting themes or actions presented beyond being an enabling father who thinks children can parent themselves. Its a disservice to everyone and it kills the opportunity for classicdom. 03-Jan-2017

Fugitive Kind, The (1960) Howl

Nobody ponders the world like Tennessee Williams and no one inhabits their inner demons like Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani. Lumet could have bound a few scenes to loosen up the attention needed for later consequences but what remains is still beauty of word, atmosphere and act. 15-Nov-2016
