Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes (2024) Howl

Some of the mythological addendums are making me question my perception of its meaning. The path for everyone is bleak and backwards. What happened to the apes that weren't kept in cages and ran free, sometimes with humans? They must have another view. Wouldn't other countries have different ways of dealing with superior apes because of how many tribes worship them? The apes haven't accomplished much. Most still stutter, they haven't learned anything about spices or cooking and they spend all their free time collecting birds. The humans are kept in the shadows, with little speak and subservient representation. It's one-sided, it thinks it's fair but give us minimum time to explain. It would have been epic to parallel human hope against animal survival. We have to apologize for being god's descendant. In the real world we would have blasted every single one of them and sold their meat on sale at Wally World. When Lady Echo said she was searching for a book that would teach all humans to talk I thought she was talking about the bible. That would have been most likely. Humans didn't save any worthy technology, like I-Phones? This movie says we suck. The movie brought cinema magic and bewilderment, technological elegance, story of interest and the golden touch of a director. My feelings differ from my enjoyment. 12-Aug-2024

Throne Of Blood (1957) Full Moon

Kurosawa's imagining of Macbeth was intoxicating. He lingered until we felt the character's desperation. The background was still and intimidating. The actors wore silent film faces with impassioned speak. Toshiro Mifune was a beast royale as MacBeth. Isuzu Yamada was fabulously haunting as his Lady. The rustle of her dress, the scary predictions, the make-up and bouts of violent madness. She was a favorite thing. Deaths were choreographed with coherent math and geography. Inspiration is achieved. Masterpiece recreation is impossible because the best things in it happened by accident. 28-Mar-2022

Shang-Chi & The Legend of Ten Rings (2021) Woof

It opens with a sober mythological tale. The action sequences lift our feet off the floor. Awkafina is refreshing. She makes corny scenarios funny. Simu Liu is a ripped pocket ass kicker. The story crumbles when daddy issues arise and Marvel wokeness and grandstanding are inserted. Motivations are vague, the writing can't keep up with the tech and by the end, the movement becomes an oncoming train. 21-Nov-2021

Curse Of The Golden Flower, The (2006) Howl

Drop dead gorgeous. That's what I thought at the time I first saw it and its what I affirm now. I devoured and appreciated the crazy amount of artistic work that Zang's imagination and his crew realized. The story was simple and intoxicating. The empress is married to a punishing emperor obsessed with perfection, war and revenge. The empress is mother and stepmother to three boys who are next in line for the crown. Empress is in love with her stepson. He's grown up and doesn't want mama or to be emperor because he's in love with the servant daughter of the doctor that is helping the emperor to secretly poison the empress with enforced medicine. Daddy is back from battle hyped to finish his family war. Traditions are broken, inconsistancy becomes normal, traditions feel like enslavement and people are ready to revolt. Chow Yun-fat knows how to stomp his foot, wield a sword and kill a son. He's intimidating. Gong-Li is that unattainable thing that becomes easy prey once prized and possessed, thrusting her into a vengeful future because she is second in command. She serves gorgeous "Meryl Streep" face.

It's a slow burn to the battle sequences but they are worth it. Action was dressed, mapped and showcased exquisitively and the bloodbath was enervating. Men versus equally matched women with children by their side. Ouch. Amen. 22-Apr-2021

Swiss Family Robinson (1960) Howl

Swiss family travel the high seas to claim new land and eco-trash it. Pirates attack their ship as they sleep, all the passengers jump to safety and nobody bothers to awaken them. Were they not liked? They were probably snooty. TG they left an animal farm, nails and enough ammo to kill an army. Shipwrecked. The Ewoks would have barked at the unrealism of the family tree palace but it's fun Disney magic. As they settle into tranquility the parents ponder the future of their three sons. The boys would inherit nothing without women to love lest they do the animals or worst, each other. A trans boy makes it onto the island and Cain and Abel are awakened to some sexual clarity. It's preposterously gorgeous, impossible, animalistic, adventurous, violent and joyous. 28-Feb-2021

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil (2019) Arf

Jolie's Maleficent is a sublime creature that never got a good movie written about her. Her work remains unmatched. Jolie, learning etiquette, was funny and bright. The dinner choreography didn't make sense. Maleficent overreacted when the prospective in-laws hadn't hit her soft spot yet. Her denial of murder should have been the catalyst. Once the scene is set, it skits, stalls, enchants and sentimentalizes. It's better than the first one.

Also, don't call a witch evil unless she eats babies. 21-Jan-2021

Dumbo (2019) Arf

Everything elephant was precious but the presentation is preoccupied with telling the audience how to feel instead of writing it. If you can't find the words or interactions, add more magic. The pink elephants were successfully woven in. It was happy. 18-Jan-2021

Over The Moon (2020) Whimper

Glen Keane weaves plenty of magic but the story cremates it. The mythology does not resonate as an inspiring fairy tale that would empower a girl by sending her out of the stratosphere. The how to the moon was unbelievable. I know its fantasy but my brain didn't even want to. Doesn't it cost billions to get a man on the moon? The moon is "gummi land" ruled by the protagonist of the mythology. Chang'e is an exquisite piece of animation whose suffering and selfishness make the circumstances obsolete. I liked everything about home. Home is where the magic needed to happen.

Star 80 (1983) Howl

The tragedy of beauty versus beast. The purpose of beauty is to inspire us. If it touches you, you are beautiful in return. It's that perfect thing that exists like a God smack to the earth. The men want to devour it, the women prefer to absorb it and forget it but the younglings want to marry it at first sight. The sculptor who attempts to shape it, before full bloom, will burn his hands on the coffin he molds around it to keep it safe. A woman will always wake up. Beauty belongs to the world not encapsulated by a man who thinks he's just as beautiful because he licensed it. Fosse snips from Citizen Kane and gives it the hutzpah the classic lacked. Fosse's mastery is beauty, movement, thrill and dash. Eric Roberts gets inside our heads and makes us understand that hot greasy ass motherfucking psycho crooked legged cowboys with great hair have feelings. Fosse resoundingly echos him. Mariel Hemingway is neither thunder or lightning. She is a cloud of beauty that doesn't need announcement. Mariel's innocence allows the tragedy to happen and unfold. It has an ending Tarantino wouldn't touch and the original footage is brutal, salacious and true. Absolutely psycho. 12-Sep-2020

Miracle Worker, The (1962) Howl

Wild child with disabilities gets reformed by teacher whose demons compel her to impart self reliance. The film's effectiveness relies on protagonist nerve and muscle. Duke and Bancroft, not only slap it, punch it and break it they receive it, just as well. The psychology was that a child that inflicts pain must undergo it to better understand their crime. All the parental rules we dethroned, helped erect the special intelligence of an unidentified child. At end of story, the combatants celebrate the characters and, I hope, each other for a job well-done.

Frozen II (2019) Whimper

Its beauty is deceptive.

There is no thought or flourish to the story and no realism to the dialogue. Children have deeper conversations than this.

They are constantly bombarded by magical things, yet still wonder at the next.

The songs are its enemy. The songwriters write songs for talkers not classically trained singers. The musical artists could not wrap their talent around them. The words weren't tonal or melodious. (A thesaurus might have helped.) Each song was a giant whoopee cushion to the ear.

I wished the snowman had melted. (I'm sorry, I've spent too much time with Gervais.)

The presentation is built to make a grown man cringe.

If it weren't so gorgeous, I'd stop fucking it.

Bring on number 3. (Sigh) 02-May-2020

Parasite (2019) Howl

The society is comprised of envy, maintenance, labor, guts and unification. Images remain in your head, long after you've dismissed them. The story is absolutely unique, the actors are natural and the suffering for/from abundance touches every base. Trimming would have propelled a much stronger impact but I couldn't stop watching every minute of its extensive length. 23-Mar-2020

Train To Busan (2016) Howl

Zombie apocalypse gets an epic disaster movie treatment. I thought there was nothing left to do with a zombie but I was thrillingly surprised. The zombies are quick, staggering and evolved. Yeong Sang-ho returns as many things as he borrowed, lending it a huge amount of humanity and eagerly expanding the perception of claustrophobic spaces. Daddy mass clobbered, daddy major stepped up and daughter darling broke our hearts. 18-Feb-2020

Fountain, The (2006) Arf

In every corner hangs beautiful art and on every wall there is a story...and a story...and a story. I wanted to hang onto the modern fable that was going to rip into our hearts not the cloak and dagger fantasy that could have been its own film. Hugh Jackman was most guttural. The film's complexity overshadowed the simplicity of life. 14-Jan-2020
