Breadwinner, The (2017)
A delicate portrait of a girl whose challenge in life is not being a boy. There is cruelty in this world because every man is the law and every man enforces it. Women can be beat or killed for showing their face and have no freedom to enjoy life. Becoming a boy helps our heroine to walk ahead, take care of her family and open her eyes. That there is hope in such gloomy circumstances helps the viewer empathize and remain firm in the fight for equality. The girl knows what's right because it beats in her heart and aches in her soul. She doesn't need to follow magic to gain freedom. She just needs to fight back. Heartwarming. 05-Apr-2018
Johnny Eager (1941)
Robert Taylor plays a hood hellbent on street cred by subjugating his past and flaunting his fortitude. Lana is an unappreciated diamond whose badboy fangirl status welcomes tragedy and Van Heflin is a dulcet toned philosopher lackey who farts predictions of everyone with words so striking they agitate the heart.
It's gangster mature that celebrates the completion of man when he embraces his soul.
Taylor hunts and kills for the egg, Lana boils and serves the egg and Heflin eats it. 20-Dec-2017

The ladies are feral as the words are wicked. At first glance, Huston's wig is all there is to character but by end, the piece is sitting comfortably in place as she absorbs it and becomes the black cat. Watch on the Rhine (1943)
The best thing Bette did was to acknowledge that the writing and the ensemble were very important to how the story plays. It's not her movie and she serves it by making her case with little flamboyance. The story preserves the heroism and the uprise that existed before the Nazi obliteration. At heart, its all play and as such it didn't need to be bombarded by strings, the actors were accomplishing their task without it. Paul Lukas holds bravery steady and Lucille Watson steals it because her tongue lashes. 26-Apr-2017

Rear Window (1954)
Perfection in moviemaking proliferates from a director who embraced the simplicity of cinema. He never made it difficult for us to understand to seem smarter. Hitchcock utilizes the camera as an unseen dominance that can manipulate the story, the characters and the mood. Details are abundant as the nuances of its leads, Stewart, Kelly & Ritter unite and triumph as they unveil them. A man who never feared a moving camera is a director that inspires art. The missteps we are blind to because the art shimmers emphatically. 06-Mar-2017
Jungle Book, The (2016)
It's as if Favreau had resurrected a film story from the embers of decaying copies of The Jungle Book. Everything enchanting you might expect gets emancipated onscreen. Neel Seethi adds luster because he's a real boy being asked to perform an overwhelming and desolate task. Pet peeves are minor. In an otherwise well voiced film I think it would have soared had Kaa been interpreted by a singing diva who would have added more seduction and dread as well a much needed showstopper. But Favreau and crew keep the childhood memories intact whilst lifting us up of our feet for a while. Job well done. 25-Oct-2016
Donnie Darko (Director's Cut) (2001)
Every actor is onboard to respect the story and to weave themselves into it without nibbling at the star that created them. At the center, a young Jake Gyllenhaal provides the psychological burnout of himself, his world and the human mysteries of the universe. Kelley sets the movie to boil on medium and entrances us with a sprightly soundtrack, kool versed videos, wit snit and inquest. All fine points, little irritants and time manipulations are eerily resolved as the gilt-edged topper is revealed. Its a slow-burn singe. 17-Oct-2016
Every attempt at modernizing Carrie fails because she is not seen as the rainbow representative that King submits and DePalma insinuates. Every retell needs to stigmatize a generation, a minority or disenfranchised group. Carrie should never be limited to being the awkward white girl created in a bubble by a sacramental beast disguised as a parent. She represents my gay evolution at infancy as I struggled with a mother alike in the machinations treading God-lightly and wrong and diluting innate powers that sheltered and desolated my world.
We have a Shakespeare tragedy honored by Hitchcock. No whitewash or credibility necessary because the story is so general and the characters so responsive and timeless that all of DePalma's devices just regulate and beautify the terror. A lot of classic art is formulated by accident. DePalma is not afforded extravagance therefore the art flourishes because of his limitations and the sustenance he feeds it. DePalma uses imagery and music to invoke the cruelty and the dread King depicted with words.
Sissy and Piper inhabit the mother daughter dynamic with grand dimensionality and a swat of bravura. The words cut because the women are acting in a play more monumental than the stage.
The support from fated topliners is unrivaled and expended.
The oft transcribed ending endures because of its truth, recognition and fear. 03-Oct-2016
