Black Doctor Repeatedly Questioned About Credentials on Delta Flight While Trying To Help Ill Passenger

A doctor who helped a passenger on a Delta flight Tuesday said she believes flight attendants who repeatedly questioned her credentials even after she showed them her medical license did so because she is a black woman.

Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford was on a Delta flight from Indianapolis to Boston when the woman next to her started hyperventilating, according to NBC News. When Stanford started to help the passenger, a flight attendant came up to ask her if she was a medical doctor. She showed the woman her license without being asked because, she told the New York Times, she knows she “doesn’t look the part.” Stanford, a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical school, said she carries a wallet-sized version of the license at all times for that reason.

New York City Renamed 'Jewtropolis' in Anti-Semitic Snapchat Map Attack

Map features in Snapchat and other popular mobile apps, including The Weather Channel and Citi Bike, referred to New York City as “Jewtropolis” on Thursday in what appears to have been an anti-Semitic act of digital vandalism.

Each of the affected apps uses mapping company Mapbox for their mapping features. Mapbox in turn relies partially on user-generated information, apparently opening the door to such attacks.

The Shiloh Scandal Is Even Worse Than It Seems

A federal court has given the Trump administration until Friday, Aug. 10, to figure out a plan for the 28 immigrant children still detained at the Shiloh Treatment Center in southeast Texas. Any child who is not deemed to pose “a risk of harm to self or others” must be transferred to a less restrictive facility, per Judge Dolly Gee’s July 30 ruling in a lawsuit filed earlier this year. She also addressed the lawsuit’s claims that residents at Shiloh have been given forced injections and prescribed antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotic drugs without consent. The government must stop this practice, she determined, and make sure that psychotropic drugs are given to detainees at Shiloh only in accordance with Texas child welfare laws and regulations.

For weeks now, this misuse of psychiatric medications has been cited as a prime example of the White House’s “despicable,” “reprehensible,” “inhumane and unconscionable” border policies. “President Donald Trump’s zero tolerance policy stands to create a zombie army of children forcibly injected with medications,” said the article from the Center for Investigative Reporting that first brought the allegations to light. “The president has to be ordered not to give children psychotropic drugs, but I’m the one that’s tripping?” one Democratic candidate for Congress said a few days ago, in defending progressives’ call to defund U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Papa John's founder John Schnatter is "not going quietly," according to his lawyer Patricia Glaser.

And he didn't want to work with singer Kanye West, he said in a letter sent to the board of directors Saturday.

Schnatter doubled down on claims he made during a television interview Friday in which he said media consultant Laundry Service tried to blackmail the pizza chain for $6 million to keep quiet about his use of the N-word during a May conference call.

Restaurant employee calls 911 on African-American family

A Georgia restaurant owner says he is investigating after an employee called 911 on an African-American family who had stopped for dinner during a vacation.

WSB-TV reports that Felicia and Othniel Dobson of North Carolina on Monday had stopped for dinner at a Subway in Newnan with their four children, ages 8 to 19, when a restaurant employee called police.

DELTA FLIGHT ATTENDANT ALLEGEDLY REMOVED SEVERAL PEOPLE FROM PLANE OVER CELLPHONE AIRPLANE-MODE ARGUMENT

Delta Airlines flight attendant reportedly removed several passengers from a plane at Fort Wayne International Airport in Indiana after an argument with a customer over a cellphone.

Robyn Rodgers, also known as DJ Reborn, posted to Instagram that she was “unfairly rejected” from Delta flight 4257 on Saturday after a female flight attendant asked her if her cellphone was in airplane mode. According to Rodgers, the flight attendant stood over her as she switched her phone to airplane mode.

"I told her 'I know how to turn on airplane mode, you don’t have to stand over me,'" Rodgers wrote in her Instagram post on Wednesday. "She became agitated and said, 'If you’re gonna act like that we can go back to the gate and you can get off.' I held up my phone to show her that airplane mode was on."

Here's what happened when Starbucks closed all of its US stores for racial bias training

Coffee behemoth Starbucks (SBUX) closed all of its 8,000-plus U.S. stores for four hours on Tuesday afternoon so its 175,000 employees could participate in company-wide racial-bias training.

“I don’t know of another company in the history of American business that’s done anything remotely like this,” executive chairman Howard Schultz said.

Closing all U.S. stores comes at a price. Bloomberg estimates it could result in $16.7 million in lost sales, which compares to $22.4 billion in revenues the company had in fiscal 2017. Starbucks will also be paying all employees participating in the training.

Thanksgiving Text Hotline Offers Lessons, Responses To Racist White Family Members

A nationwide network of white Americans hoping to weed out support for white supremacy has set up a free texting service, the SURJ Holiday Mobile Hotline, to help people respond and report racist Thanksgiving conversations.

Last year, the Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ) network set up a similar service to text “SOS” in case unruly family members or friends attempted to bring up their support of then-President Elect Donald Trump or bigoted conversation topics. This Thanksgiving and holiday season, the group has expanded the free texting service to call out any openly racist white family members disrupting Thanksgiving dinner. The service hopes to "break silence about race in this country," according to the group website.

Cards Against Humanity buying plot of land on border to try to stop Trump's wall

The company that makes Cards Against Humanity is trying to prevent President Trump's proposed border wall from being built by purchasing a plot of vacant land along the country's border.

"Donald Trump is a preposterous golem who is afraid of Mexicans. He is so afraid that he wants to build a twenty-billion dollar wall that everyone knows will accomplish nothing," a statement said on the website Cards Against Humanity Saves America.

"So we’ve purchased a plot of vacant land on the border and retained a law firm specializing in eminent domain to make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for the wall to get built."

'Asian' Restaurant Changes Name After Charges of Racism and Misogyny

Ryan Vermaak and Fabio di Cosmo, two aspiring restaurateurs based in Johannesburg, South Africa, failed to see anything wrong with naming their yet-to-open “Asian restaurant” Misohawni. “Don’t you just love the name?” the pair tweeted yesterday. (Their Twitter bio says that Misohawni is ‘Cumming Soon’.)

The name is a phonetic spelling of a phrase used by a Vietnamese prostitute in the 1987 war film Full Metal Jacket. In the scene, the woman approaches two American soldiers and propositions them for sex. One of them says he’ll only pay her $10, before posing for a photo with her and calling her a “[racial slur] whore.”

ROBOTS WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BECOME RACIST AND SEXIST—SCIENTISTS THINK THEY'VE FOUND A WAY TO CHANGE THEIR MINDS

In 2016, Microsoft released a “playful” chatbot named Tay onto Twitter designed to show off the tech giant’s burgeoning artificial intelligence research. Within 24 hours, it had become one of the internet’s ugliest experiments.

By learning from its interactions with other Twitter users, Tay quickly went from tweeting about how “humans are super cool,” to claiming “Hitler was right I hate the jews.”

While it was a public relations disaster for Microsoft, Tay demonstrated an important issue with machine learning artificial intelligence: That robots can be as racist, sexist and prejudiced as humans if they acquire knowledge from text written by humans.

Marvel Writer Slammed For Calling Kellogg’s Racially Insensitive

Kellogg’s has decided to redesign its Corn Pops cereal boxes after the United States-based food manufacturer was accused Tuesday of being racist.

Marvel Comics’ Black Bolt series writer Saladin Ahmed made the accusation. He pointed out that though the boxes show other corn pops having fun inside a retail mall, a brown corn pop could be seen working as a janitor, waxing the floors.

'We Do Not Tolerate Discrimination.' American Airlines CEO Responds to NAACP Warning for Black Passengers

"We were disappointed to learn of a travel advisory issued by the NAACP regarding American Airlines," said American Airlines CEO Doug Parker in a memo to employees.

Parker continued: "The mission statement of the NAACP states that it 'seeks to remove all barriers of racial discrimination.' That’s a mission that the people of American Airlines endorse and facilitate every day – we do not and will not tolerate discrimination of any kind. We have reached out to the NAACP and are eager to meet with them to listen to their issues and concerns."

Parker's note follows a statement from the NAACP highlighting what it called “a pattern of disturbing incidents reported by African-American passengers, specific to American Airlines," and arguing the events suggest "a corporate culture of racial insensitivity and a possible racial bias."

With Rise in Racially Charged Incidents on Campus, Colleges Work to Ease Students’ Fears

Less than two months after white nationalists marched with torches across the campus of the University of Virginia, school officials nationwide are still struggling with how to ensure students feel welcome and safe on campus.

On Tuesday, cotton branches stapled to Confederate flags signs were seen posted around American University in Washington, D.C. On the same campus in May, students and officials found bananas hung in black noose-like rope, marked with the words "Harambe bait" and "AKA free," and apparent reference to the gorilla that was shot by Cincinnati zookeepers in May 2106, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

“As a student government president and an upperclassman, I have a duty to make sure this doesn't keep happening to students on my campus,” Dumpson said.
