29 million girls, women victims of modern slavery
A new report estimates that 29 million women and girls are victims of modern slavery, exploited by practices including forced labour, forced marriage, debt-bondage and domestic servitude.
Grace Forrest, co-founder of the Walk Free anti-slavery organisation, said Friday that means one in every 130 women and girls is living in modern slavery today, more than the population of Australia.
"The reality is that there are more people living in slavery today than any other time in human history," she told a U.N. news conference.
Walk Free defines modern slavery "as the systematic removal of a person’s freedom, where one person is exploited by another for personal or financial gain," she said.
According to the report, titled "Stacked Odds," women account for 99% of all victims of forced sexual exploitation, 84% of all victims of forced marriage, and 58% of all victims of forced labour.

5 Things Men Do That Are an Embarrassment to Our Gender
I’ve spent a fair amount of pixels, ink and the Houston Press’ money discussing the big problems with patriarchy in the world. How we fail pregnant female veterans, how men use geek spaces to perpetuate rape culture, how we applaud women seeking power in theory but not in practice… all worthy discussions.
Today, though, I want to talk to the guys not about what a sexist world does negatively to women, but to ourselves. Toxic and fragile masculinity is a real problem, and as women continue to gain more and more equality it is only going to get worse if we don’t start addressing it. It’s that same toxic and fragile idea of masculinity that drives the incel community, which birthed the spree killer Elliot Rodgers. It’s what drives the Pick-Up Artist community to turn sex into a game of dominance rather than something people consensually share for mutual benefit.
Here are five of the most embarrassing examples of men’s weakness in affirming their masculinity I’ve run across. Guys, stop doing these. It is having the opposite effect that you think it is.

Study suggests young people hazy on what constitutes sexual assault — especially young men
People might be increasingly aware that sexual assault is a real and widespread problem, but that doesn't mean everyone knows what sexual assault actually means.
Adults — men, especially — are still somewhat hazy on what constitutes sexual assault, according to new data from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, in partnership with YouGov.
In an online poll, the NSVRC surveyed 1,221 adults over a two-day period in March. People largely seem to understand sex without consent is a problem, with more than 80% of respondents saying non-consensual sex and non-consensual touching were sexual assault.
Those numbers alone suggest a positive trend, but there's still work to be done — especially when it comes to educating men, who, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, are responsible for 80% of women's rape cases.

The rise of 'modest' fashion
Modest dressing is a global cultural movement on the rise.
Trend analysts have dubbed what they interpret as a new wave of feminism the "pluri-empowerment" factor, says Iza Dezon, a trend forecaster at Peclers Paris.
"An empowered woman is no longer subject to a specific definition, nor must she live by a specific set of values," she explains. "We're seeing the opening up of what empowerment means, allowing women to create their own definitions."
The modest movement has been gaining steam for a few years now and the hijab has become a recognized symbol. In 2014 DKNY launched a bespoke modest fashion collection. In 2016, Dolce & Gabbana released a line of luxury hijabs and abayas.

Office sexism reaches an absurd new level
When my friend told me that her male colleagues were keeping track of her period, my initial reaction was, “Wait? What!”
When I asked her why, I couldn’t actually believe what she told me.
“They want to stay away from me when I’m PMSing, because I get a bit moody,” she said.
She laughed it off, not taking it seriously because she’s good friends with the man who initiated the “tracking.”
But I didn’t.
She found out her male colleagues were keeping track of her “time of the month” after she had a small argument with one of them, who had asked her if she was having her period.
“I was shocked and said, ‘Yes. How do you know?’” she explained to me.
It turns out he had been tracking her cycle on his work calendar, sending himself reminders of when her period was about to come up. Making the whole thing worse, he’d sent the calendar to all their male colleagues so they could all keep track of her and their other female friends’ cycles.
