'Sloshed' New Jersey priest who advises the Pope gets DUI for being found twice over the limit after crashing into pregnant mother on London highway
As a Vatican consultant and a former spiritual adviser to student priests in Rome, you might have expected Monsignor Anthony Figueiredo to be a model of sobriety.
But he was pictured 'visibly sloshed' with his dog collar askew after his hire car hit a pregnant solicitor's 4x4 on the M25. He was more than twice the drink-drive limit.
Figueiredo, 54, who is a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, in the US, pulled over after the rush-hour accident and was photographed in his dishevelled state by the other driver, Olivia Parfitt, on her phone.
THE U.S. CATHOLIC CHURCH IS FACING AN UNPRECEDENTED WAVE OF SEX ABUSE INVESTIGATIONS
In the months since a Pennsylvania grand jury announced the names of more than 300 priests who’d abused at least 1,000 children, authorities across the United States have launched investigations of unprecedented scale into sex abuse within the U.S. Catholic Church.
On Wednesday, Virginia became at least the 15th state where officials have announced a plan to investigate sex abuse allegations within the Church. At the federal level, the Justice Department has subpoenaed records from at least seven of Pennsylvania’s eight Catholic dioceses, the Associated Press reported last week, in a probe believed to be the first of its kind, according to the Survivors Network of those Abuse by Priests (SNAP).

Religion and Sexual Shame
The World Health Organization once estimated that more than 100 million couples around the globe make love during a typical day. Sex is a powerful human force. It’s natural, healthy, normal and wonderful. However, Western religion has spent millennia tainting it with shame, guilt and punishment. Holy men equate sex with “sin.”
The Bible contains 96 verses denouncing “harlots,” “whores,” “whoredom” and the like – branding many females as vile temptresses. It decrees that brides who aren’t virgins shall be taken to their fathers’ doorsteps and stoned to death (Deut. 22:21). It mandates that adulterers, both male and female, must be killed (Lev. 20:10). For gay males, it commands: “They shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them” (Lev. 20:13).
Today, a few evangelists such as Colorado preacher Kevin Swanson still declare publicly that gays should be killed.
Early church leaders ranted against lovemaking.

Will Any Music Awards Show Get Representation For Women Right? None Have Yet.
On last night’s American Music Awards (AMAs), Taylor Swift doubled down on her voter registration message, Ciara and Missy Elliott leveled up, and Aretha Franklin finally got the tribute she deserved. Women were at the forefront of the show, which was a vast step forward from their massive under representation at the Grammys or the MTV VMAs and the number of awards they won was a step up from their Billboard Music Awards treatment. The AMAS did the best job representing women as performers and winners of any music awards show this year. They also showed us how far music has to go to fix its #MeToo and representation issues.
But digging a little deeper, the AMAs also highlight some serious areas that need work. First and foremost, let’s talk about the late XXXTentacion being nominated for two awards, and winning one that was broadcast in the show. Imagine the Golden Globes nominating Roman Polanski (or Woody Allen, or Kevin Spacey, or any number of high profile men accused of sexual misconduct) for an award this year, of all years. Imagine them giving it to him on television. And imagine that later on, when a woman nominated against him lauds his work, saying she’s a fan and it’s an honor to be in the same category as him. That’s essentially what happened with XXX’s win, and Camila Cabello’s subsequent lauding of him in her Best New Artist acceptance speech. XXX, who passed away earlier this year, may have been a talented artist and undoubtedly has legions of fans. But he is also accused of violent, disturbing abuse against a woman. We don’t have to celebrate abusers at our awards show, and to do so only tells women that their pain is not important. It was an especially bitter pill to swallow after weeks of the Kavanaugh confirmation battle. Music seems to think it can continue to exist in a bubble where #MeToo and support for the survivors of abuse are negligible.
