Biden declines to say where he stands on BLM-backed BREATHE Act

President-elect Joe Biden has been silent on his stance on the Black Lives Matter-backed BREATHE Act, despite pushes from the progressive wing of his party to pass sweeping legislation aimed at social justice reform in the first 100 days of his administration.

The BREATHE Act was introduced by Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and has been a flashpoint for BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who has urged Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to meet with her soon to discuss the future of Black communities under the new administration.

Despite repeated requests for comment from Biden's transition team, Fox News did not get a response on whether his administration supports the reforms suggested in the bill, and whether he will make its passage a key priority once assuming the White House come January.

Oregon governor tells residents to call cops on people violating COVID restrictions

As the nation cracks down on group activities so close to the Thanksgiving holiday, Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat, has told Oregon's residents to call the cops if they see coronavirus violations.

“This is no different than what happens if there's a party down the street and it's keeping everyone awake,” Brown said in an interview Friday. “What do neighbors do [in that case]? They call law enforcement because it's too noisy. This is just like that. It's like a violation of a noise ordinance.”

“Oregon is on a steep and stark slope of rising coronavirus cases,” said Patrick Allen, director of the health department. “But we aren’t powerless in the face of this virus. Because it depends on us to slow the spread. Your choices make a difference.”

'REIMAGINE JUSTICE' BLM calls on Biden and Dems to back bill that could lead to prisons being ABOLISHED dubbed ‘love letter to black people’

The proposed bill – titled the Breathe Act – is described by Cullors as a "legislative love letter to Black people" in the op-ed.

She explained: "Practically speaking, the BREATHE Act is a landmark civil rights bill.

"It takes bold, progressive steps to build public safety systems that work for all of us, no matter what community we come from."

The legislation will provide organizations with "funds to create public safety systems uniquely tailored to their community’s needs and incentivize states to decarcerate and defund."

‘Married at First Sight’ Fans Feel Fed Up With the Current Experts

Married at First Sight fans are starting to get frustrated with the Lifetime show’s so-called experts. Seasons 10 and 11 have both featured couples that seem to have nothing going for them — fans of Season 10 will probably point to Mindy Shiben and Zach Justice as an excellent example, and those watching Season 11 are currently irritated with Brett and Olivia as well as Christina and Henry. Now, after watching these two Season 11 pairs crash and burn, fans are wondering if it’s time for the series to find new matchmakers.

Married at First Sight fans are taking these mismatched couples as a sign that it’s time for Lifetime to reconsider its experts.

“How are these people getting matched!? It’s not too hard to find out when and if someone wants to have children. Ditto if they are a physically demonstrative, affectionate person or not!” posted a frustrated fan on Reddit.

“This show could be such an awesome sociological experiment but it seems some couples are just being matched for the potential reality TV drama they might create. These are real people they are messing with, in real LEGAL marriages!” they added.

“The experts don’t seem to pay too much attention to what the people are looking for in a partner. They are matching them based on their ‘knowledge’ and are failing miserably. I think it’s definitely time for a change in experts,” opined a commenter on the thread.

Ask Amy: Am I a busybody for telling her what her 13-year-old is doing?

Dear Amy:

Recently, I noticed that the 13-year-old daughter of some close friends has been posting sexually provocative photos of herself on Instagram.

This is a public account, and strange men make sexual comments on her posts and she responds with lewd remarks that couldn’t be printed in a family newspaper.

I find it alarming, and so I notified the girl’s mother (who’s not on social media) and she thanked me for speaking up, but she also gave an excuse along the lines of “she’s just precocious.”

Meanwhile, the content continues. I think this is dangerous for the girl, but I also feel like it’s in the parents’ hands now. Is it right to continue to stay silent, once I’ve said my piece?

'It's everything wrong with everything': Bethenny Frankel slams Kylie Jenner's 'back to school' snap of Stormi, two, wearing $12K Hermes backpack

Bethenny Frankel is leading a chorus of disapproval regarding Kylie Jenner and her two-year-old daughter Stormi Webster's very extravagant school uniform.

Yesterday, Kylie - who is worth an estimated $900 million - posted a back-to-school-style snap of her toddler, sporting a light pink Hermes Taurillon Clemence Kelly Ado Backpack, which retails for an eye-watering $12K.

Bethenny, 49, took issue with the picture, writing on Instagram: 'I never say anything about this stuff but this is the most transparent humble brag I've seen yet. It's everything wrong with everything.'

However, after receiving some backlash, Bethenny defended her comment on an Us Weekly Instagram post, adding: 'I'm no stranger to an @Hermes_Paris bag & have a daughter & luxury cars, but flaunting (under the guise of a back to school post) during a pandemic & the greatest unemployment crisis in our lifetime is a choice.'

The brother of the driver who was assaulted by a group of Black Lives Matter protesters in Portland is raising money for his sibling’s recovery and destroyed property — and to potentially allow him to move out of the city.

“Adam was trying to help someone and was then attacked,” Brian wrote on the page that’s received more than $100,000 in donations as of Wednesday morning.

Multiple Portland companies plan to move out of downtown office spaces because ongoing BLM protests have made the area 'unsafe' - with reports of widespread vandalism and 'workers being attacked'

A number of companies based in downtown Portland are set to vacate or sell their offices because on-going protests in the city against police brutality have led to 'unsafe' conditions in the area, reports suggest.

Activists have taken to the city streets for the last 82 consecutive nights to demonstrate under the banner of Black Lives Matter, but some of the rallies have descended into chaos, resulting in violent clashes with police or widespread acts of vandalism.

‘Our downtown properties have sustained significant vandalism and a number of employees and contractors have been assaulted in recent months,’ Standard Insurance's community relations senior director Bob Speltz told KGW.

The two men continue to exchange false pleasantries. When asked how he feels about stepping down, the officer says, ‘I’m feeling great. I’m stepping down from this department. You guys won.’

The officer is asked if he is stepping down because of police brutality, to which the officer says he isn’t, rather he’s handing in his badge because he’s tried of dealing with Black Lives Matter protesters.

Their dialogue is momentarily interrupted when the officer becomes embroiled in a heated exchange of words with another protester who is out of frame.

Fired Below Deck Mediterranean Star Peter Hunziker Rants About Malia White For Alleged Cocaine Use; Says He Took Anxiety Medicine During Charter Season And Didn’t Face Consequences Like Hannah Ferrier Did

Now fired Deckhand, Peter Hunziker decided to call out Malia for some serious hypocrisy. The Instagram account bravosuperfans captured his recent post and shared it. In it, Pete started by saying, “Honestly, let’s talk about Malia’s Cocaine use off the boat?” Oops.

Pete continued to share, “I didn’t get fired, I had panic attacks, I took my medicine, I was fine.” Pause to clarify that he WAS fired, just not for this, which happened post-production. The point is that he took his anxiety medicine without any scandal during the charter season.

He goes on about Malia, “What a ray, let’s air sweetheart Malia’s DRUG history out there Miss I’m so worried about my tickets but I’ll sniff an 8 ball on the weekend.”

Police in Canada have launched an investigation after three brutal homophobic attacks took place over the course of just four days.

Finally, on Monday (August 3), a queer couple were out walking near the intersection of 9 Street and Memorial Drive at around 5.30pm when they were approached by two men and two women on electronic scooters.

The two men proceeded to beat the men using a belt, rocks and a recycling bin. It is believed that the couple were targeted because of their sexual orientation.

The murder spike in big US cities, explained

As if a Covid-19 pandemic wasn’t bad enough, the headlines suggest America is in the middle of a new wave of homicides — from New York City to Chicago to Minneapolis.

The data backs up the headlines, suggesting that homicide numbers are significantly higher in at least some major US cities. But it’s not clear if this is part of a nationwide phenomenon, or if it’s something isolated to urban centers, because we don’t have good data outside the large cities. To make matters more confusing, other types of crime, including violent crime overall, appear to have decreased in many of the same cities.

Still, there’s enough in the three data sets to draw some conclusions: At least in major US cities, homicides are up overall this summer — in some cases, significantly higher. But other kinds of crime, including violent crime overall, aren’t up and may actually have decreased so far this year. There was also a brief spike in burglaries in major cities starting in late May, an increase that was so brief and contained to specific cities that experts told me it was likely due to riots and looting surrounding some Black Lives Matter protests.

Beyond the pandemic, police are going to have more trouble fighting crime — including any current or future spikes — if large segments of the community don’t trust them. That’s where police reform comes into play. It’s a complicated topic, separate from a possible spike in violence this year. But, in short, experts say police should, at a minimum, show the communities they serve that they understand the concerns, acknowledge mistakes, and will change how officers are deployed and targeted.

Otherwise, there’s a good chance that protests against police will flare up, just as they did from 2014 to 2016 and have again this summer. If protests lead to more violence — whether by leading to depolicing, or sowing and exposing distrust in law enforcement — that’s going to create public safety problems.

Showtime fires Paulie Malignaggi over controversial remarks on racism, racial oppression

Showtime Boxing returns tonight (August 1st) from Uncasville, CT with a vacant WBO bantamweight title between Tramaine Williams and Angelo Leo as the main event, but the broadcast will not feature Paulie Malignaggi’s analysis. In fact, Showtime has axed Malignaggi altogether.

Boxing Scene first reported that the retired former world champion was removed from Showtime Boxing broadcasts for comments he made back in April in an IFL TV interview that he apparently refused to apologize for. When the apology wasn’t issued, Showtime gave Malignaggi the boot. Abner Mares will take his place at least for tonight’s broadcast.

Now we get to Paulie. He directly addressed Haney’s comments by saying that through boxing history, the sport has been dominated by different racial/ethnic groups, and he claims that African-American fighters are no longer the dominant force in boxing like they were in the 30-50 years ago.
