Police launch hate crime investigation after spree of homophobic attacks sees queer folk beaten, spat at and pelted with rocks
Police in Canada have launched an investigation after three brutal homophobic attacks took place over the course of just four days.
Finally, on Monday (August 3), a queer couple were out walking near the intersection of 9 Street and Memorial Drive at around 5.30pm when they were approached by two men and two women on electronic scooters.
The two men proceeded to beat the men using a belt, rocks and a recycling bin. It is believed that the couple were targeted because of their sexual orientation.

The murder spike in big US cities, explained
As if a Covid-19 pandemic wasn’t bad enough, the headlines suggest America is in the middle of a new wave of homicides — from New York City to Chicago to Minneapolis.
The data backs up the headlines, suggesting that homicide numbers are significantly higher in at least some major US cities. But it’s not clear if this is part of a nationwide phenomenon, or if it’s something isolated to urban centers, because we don’t have good data outside the large cities. To make matters more confusing, other types of crime, including violent crime overall, appear to have decreased in many of the same cities.
Still, there’s enough in the three data sets to draw some conclusions: At least in major US cities, homicides are up overall this summer — in some cases, significantly higher. But other kinds of crime, including violent crime overall, aren’t up and may actually have decreased so far this year. There was also a brief spike in burglaries in major cities starting in late May, an increase that was so brief and contained to specific cities that experts told me it was likely due to riots and looting surrounding some Black Lives Matter protests.
Beyond the pandemic, police are going to have more trouble fighting crime — including any current or future spikes — if large segments of the community don’t trust them. That’s where police reform comes into play. It’s a complicated topic, separate from a possible spike in violence this year. But, in short, experts say police should, at a minimum, show the communities they serve that they understand the concerns, acknowledge mistakes, and will change how officers are deployed and targeted.
Otherwise, there’s a good chance that protests against police will flare up, just as they did from 2014 to 2016 and have again this summer. If protests lead to more violence — whether by leading to depolicing, or sowing and exposing distrust in law enforcement — that’s going to create public safety problems.

Showtime fires Paulie Malignaggi over controversial remarks on racism, racial oppression
Showtime Boxing returns tonight (August 1st) from Uncasville, CT with a vacant WBO bantamweight title between Tramaine Williams and Angelo Leo as the main event, but the broadcast will not feature Paulie Malignaggi’s analysis. In fact, Showtime has axed Malignaggi altogether.
Boxing Scene first reported that the retired former world champion was removed from Showtime Boxing broadcasts for comments he made back in April in an IFL TV interview that he apparently refused to apologize for. When the apology wasn’t issued, Showtime gave Malignaggi the boot. Abner Mares will take his place at least for tonight’s broadcast.
Now we get to Paulie. He directly addressed Haney’s comments by saying that through boxing history, the sport has been dominated by different racial/ethnic groups, and he claims that African-American fighters are no longer the dominant force in boxing like they were in the 30-50 years ago.

In Portland, some Black activists frustrated with white protesters
A small group of Black teenage girls carrying megaphones stood in front of the federal courthouse in downtown Portland near midnight on Thursday facing a largely white band of protesters.
“I’m done with y’all focusing on all these white folk,” said 17-year-old Erandi, who asked to be identified only by her first name. “This is a Black Lives Matter movement.”
They are more organic than organized. Protesters chant: “George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Black Lives Matter.” A microphone is passed around to whoever wants to speak. The scenes feel festive at times, with drumbeats and tambourines, and a grill that serves food at all hours. On one night, a man holding a microphone raps to the crowd: “On the Portland streets/We’re taking it back/Wearing a mask ‘cuz they shoot me with gas.”
But the reality on the ground is as murky as the nightly clouds of tear gas had been. There are no clear leaders or structure to these demonstrations, and as midnight looms the focus moves to a small band of mainly white people trying to attack the courthouse throwing fireworks and objects at police and agents over a fence guarding the building.
Riots, Not Protests: The Media Is Gaslighting You / Opinion
Bad-faith media members tell you civil unrest in American cities are really peaceful protests. And when they do actually acknowledge violence, some media frame it as a direct result of President Donald Trump.
You are being lied to. It's an audacious attempt to gaslight the American public, as some media continue their effort to help defeat President Trump.
The Pacific Northwest is under siege. Nightly, riots overtake Portland. In Seattle, there were three costly and dangerous riots over the course of just a week. People are getting injured, and both businesses and public buildings are being destroyed or vandalized. And the media is pretending it's not really happening.
I've covered the demonstrations and they're anything but peaceful. But you don't have to be in Seattle or Portland to understand what's going on. A casual Twitter search yields video after video after video after video of the violence.
So why are we being told the violence isn't happening? It's part of a strategic campaign to push back against Trump's re-election.
Trader Joe's disagrees any of its ethic food brands are racist amid calls to change packaging
While Trader Joe's says it plans to change some of the names and packaging of several of its ethnic food brands, the grocer said it doesn't believe the names are racist.
The company says it has been labeling some of its ethnic foods with variations of "Joe" for decades, including Trader Ming’s, which is used to brand the chain’s Chinese foods, Trader José's for Mexican foods, "Arabian Joe” for Middle Eastern foods, “Trader Giotto’s” for Italian foods and “Trader Joe San” for Japanese cuisine.
Trader Joe's rebuffed reports that a small Change.org petition calling on the company to "removing racist packaging" was what prompted officials to take action.
"We want to be clear: we disagree that any of these labels are racist," the company said a new statement shared with USA TODAY on Tuesday. "We do not make decisions based on petitions. ... If we feel there is need for change, we do not hesitate to take action."
Trump sends 100 MORE troops into Portland and calls the protesters 'sick and deranged anarchists' as the DOJ shares photos of gasoline, bleach and Molotov cocktails confiscated during the chaos
The US Marshals Service decided last week to deploy 100 deputy marshals to fortify security outside the Mark O. Hatfield federal courthouse in downtown Portland, according to an internal email obtained by The Washington Post on Monday.
The email indicated that the marshals began arriving last Thursday, ahead of a heated weekend that saw heavily armed federal troops repeatedly fire tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls into crowds of protesters as they attempted to breach a fence surrounding the courthouse on Saturday and Sunday night.
Protesters set fire to a courthouse in Oakland, California; an armed protester was shot and killed in Austin, Texas; vehicles were set ablaze in Richmond, Virginia; and two people were shot and wounded in Aurora, Colorado after a car drove through a protest.
One Million Moms has launched a boycott against “all things Hallmark” after the network dared to acknowledge the existence of LGBT+ people in its holiday movies.
On July 15 the Hallmark Channel announced 18 new movies for the festive season, and while none of them had LGBT+ main characters, the channel promised that more queer storylines, characters and actors would be on the way.
One Million Moms responded by declaring an oh-so-predictable boycott of literally everything produced by Hallmark, including the TV channel, wrapping paper, greetings cards and Christmas ornaments.

Disturbing video shows teens beating pregnant mom, kicking toddler
A group of teens pummeled a pregnant Illinois mom — and even drop-kicked her helpless tot — during a caught-on-video brawl, according to footage and reports.
The disturbing confrontation circulating on Twitter showed two young women attacking the woman as she stood with her young daughter outside a home Friday in the village of Brooklyn.
Two of the girls are seen in the footage attacking the woman, pulling her hair and pushing her to the ground.
A third girl filmed the attack on the mom, who is pregnant, The Sun reported.
As the group clobbered the mom, a teen boy suddenly ran over and kicked the toddler in the head, the report said.

A black conservative activist took video of a violent Black Lives Matter demonstration at a Dallas restaurant where he was eating with friends over the weekend and narrated the scene as it unfolded into violence — to the point where he said police arrived and deployed tear gas and pepper spray.
As the demonstrators chanted and cursed, Felder noted families seated with young children who were enduring the torrent of verbal abuse and profanity.
"They're out here right now trying to act a fool," he said of the demonstrators who soon began advancing on the tables and the restaurant staff and throwing objects and shoving those in their way.
"Here it is, see?" Felder observed. "They create the unrest, and then they get upset when someone actually speaks up for themselves. That's the problem."
At least 17 people shot in NYC on Monday as gun violence continues to soar
At least 17 people were shot in New York City on Monday — a tally that would be considered high for a weekend day, but is “astronomical” for early in the week, law enforcement sources said.
No borough was spared from the gunplay, but Brooklyn saw the most violence with 10 shooting incidents and a total of 12 victims, sources said.
“Those numbers would be high for a Friday or Saturday, but for a Monday they are astronomical,” said one high-ranking Brooklyn cop.

A man was recorded throwing red paint onto the Black Lives Matter mural that was recently painted on the street in front Trump Tower on Monday.
In brief footage of the incident captured early Monday, the man, whose face was covered, can be seen dumping a can of red paint over part of the mural, days after it was completed. The man, who also doesn't appear to be wearing gloves, then sets the can down on the street and flees.
