Board rejects curriculum that mentions Harvey Milk
Proponents of the ban say Milk was a sexual predator, referring to a disputed claim that the gay rights icon had an inappropriate relationship with a minor. Opponents say changing the curriculum four weeks before school is scheduled to start would unnecessarily throw teachers’ lesson plans into turmoil.

Young Folk Don't Believe in Fairy Tales
As many as 90 per cent of young people believe that the tales are old-fashioned with 89 per cent of people surveyed saying they perpetuate gender stereotypes.
Seventy seven per cent believe that the classic stories are sexist while a quarter of parents said they wouldn't read 'offensive' tales to their young children at bedtime.
But parents have hit back, saying that fairy tales showed them both sides of life and that reading them to their young children was an experience they loved.

Here, more than 100 years after his death, Tony Jackson is still recognized as one of the all-time great ragtime musicians. He ran the musical circuit of the Storyville section of New Orleans way back in the late 19th/early 20th century, influenced everything musical legends to pianist fashion, and was out and proud while doing it.

Turns Out Prince Was a Gay-Bashing Homophobe
“When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, ‘God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot: I'm only granting one-on-one interviews to journalists of color
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Wednesday that she will grant one-on-one interviews to mark the two-year anniversary of her inauguration solely to journalists of color, saying she has been struck by the “overwhelmingly” white press corps in Chicago.
“I ran to break up the status quo that was failing so many,” Lightfoot, who is Black, tweeted, also issuing a detailed letter to City Hall reporters on her decision. “That isn’t just in City Hall. It’s a shame that in 2021, the City Hall press corps is overwhelmingly White in a city where more than half of the city identifies as Black, Latino, AAPI or Native American.”
While the move isn’t unprecedented in recent years, it drew fierce scrutiny among the city’s press corps and beyond with members of the media quickly taking Lightfoot to task for her decision.

NY Public Library keeping Dr. Seuss books in circulation
The New York Public Library will keep six controversial Dr. Seuss books on the shelves despite this week’s decision to cease their publication due to racist imagery.
The library, which serves Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, said it does not censor books and will keep the controversial titles in circulation until they are no longer in suitable shape to lend out, a spokeswoman said.

Stories written by children are far more likely to feature MALE characters – regardless of whether the writer is a boy or a girl
They found that regardless of age boys and girls were more likely to write about characters with a traditionally male name.
With only half of girls writing about boys in their stories, the researchers say it shows boys will continue to write about their gender as they grow up, but girls will still write as much about boys as they do their own gender.

Acclaimed US novelist Joyce Carol Oates slams Brandeis University for banning phrases like 'picnic' and 'you guys' for being 'oppressive'
An award-winning novelist has slammed students at a Massachusetts liberal arts college for banning phrases like 'picnic' and 'you guys' for being 'oppressive', and even outlawing the term 'trigger warning' for its association with guns.
Joyce Carol Oates flagged the inclusion of the word 'picnic' on the list produced by Brandeis University, tweeting: 'What is strange is that while the word ''picnic'' is suggested for censorship, because it evokes, in some persons, lynchings of Black persons in the US, the word ''lynching'' is not itself censored.'

‘GRINCH Act’ introduced to protect children's books from cancel culture: ‘No one is safe’
Rep. John Joyce, R-Pa., is fighting back against the cancel culture and argued no one is "safe" from the "woke" movement.
The Pennsylvania lawmaker is introducing the Guarding Readers’ Independence and Choice (GRINCH) Act to safeguard children’s literature from being "canceled." The GRINCH Act will cut off government funding for agencies that censor books.
"The reaction has been so positive...the cancel culture is rapidly attacking our American institutions, our libraries, our school," Joyce told "America’s Newsroom," Friday. "I'm alarmed at the left's attempt to cancel historic books characters."

Dr. Seuss Sales Bonanza Shows Why Wokeness Will Lose
It’s now been nearly three weeks since Dr. Seuss erupted into the news. Yes, the eruption is a bit strange, as the famed children’s book author died three decades ago. And yet the story is important because in it we see two things: First, the zealotry of left-wing cancel culture, which made the choice to pick this fight, and second, the power of center-right backlash in response. Yes, when confronted with the abnormal, it’s necessary for normal people to fight back.
Moreover, as the Seuss Saga plays itself out, we are seeing that while the left can win the first battle, the right can win the war.
In fact, in the case of Dr. Seuss, Americans have been actively defending their right to read. In the days after Dr. Seuss’ cancellation, his books soared to the top of Amazon’s best-seller list; indeed, as the Associated Press reported on March 11, Dr. Seuss sold 1.2 million books in the first week after the partial cancellation, more than quadruple the total from the week before.
This is how Trump gets reelected, by the way. Cancel Dr. Seuss, cancel Abe Lincoln, melt down Mr. Potato Head’s private parts and throw them at the Muppets. That is his path to victory the next time around.

Can gay people whistle? John Waters doesn’t think they can.
Can gay people whistle?
Add John Waters to the camp of people who don’t think they can.
It’s one of many subjects the filmmaker, writer, and gay icon has been pondering while in quarantine because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Waters said he recently read British author Julian Barnes’ latest book, The Man in the Red Coat, a biography about surgeon and sex addict Samuel Jean Pozzi and life in England and France during the Belle Epoque. He said he was surprised to read that people back then supposedly judged others based on whether they could whistle.
“There was a thing in the Oscar Wilde days that people believed that gay people couldn’t whistle,” Waters said. “And it’s true. Gay people can’t whistle. I’ve asked every gay person I know and they can’t.”

Jim Carrey Says Renée Zellweger Was “His Last Great Love”
Twenty years after they dated, Jim Carrey still has very fond memories of his short-lived romance with Renée Zellweger.
In an interview on The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM on Tuesday, Stern asked the actor about his semi-fictional book, Memoirs and Misinformation based on his real life, and how sincere he was in writing that Zellweger was “his last great love.”
“She definitely was special to me, very special, I think she's lovely,” Carrey confirmed. Stern added, “You have poetic license because it's fiction, but you're saying, ‘Man, the great love of my life was Renee Zellweger’ and that was quite some time ago, and it was almost like you were saying I shouldn't have fucked that up. That was the one, whatever happened, the one that got away.”

10 Gruesome Original Stories Behind Disney Movies
The recent outrage over Disney's casting of black actress Halle Bailey to play Ariel in the live-action Little Mermaid film has taken over social media, but people crying foul over the entertainment giant "changing" the source material have another thing coming. First of all, as author Tracey Baptiste points out in an article for The New York Times, mermaids have always been black. Second of all, there are plenty of fairy tales that Disney has changed over its 80-plus-year movie-making career, and I've got 10 of them explained for you below.
Book nerds should know by now that no page-to-screen adaptation can be 100 percent faithful to the original. Everything diverges from its source material in degrees, and fairy tales are no exception.
