Kicked out, spat on and abused, new UK shelter helps LGBT+ homeless

LONDON, May 15 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Apart from being spat on and urinated on when he slept rough in London for over a year, 52-year-old Chabahn had to contend with another daily threat: being abused and attacked for his sexuality.

Chabahn, who is gay but kept it hidden on the streets, said living with HIV was an additional burden that some mainstream shelters did not have the capacity to support him with.

"When it comes to being LGBT, the amount of discrimination on the street is rather high. There is no safety, you have to fend for yourself," said Chabahn, who declined to give his full name.

"You have to become a very good actor and you have to be someone that you are not."

Eight Arrested for Hacking LGBTQ Activists to Death

Eight members of a radical group with ties to al Qaeda have been charged with the murder of two LGBTQ activists in Bangladesh, several media outlets reported today.

Xulhaz Mannan, founder and publisher of Bangadesh’s first gay magazine, Roopbaan, and actor Mahbub Rabbi Tonoy were hacked to death at Mannan’s home in Dhaka, the nation’s capital and largest city, in April 2016. Ansar al Islam, the regional arm of al Qaeda, claimed credit for the attack. Its members gained access to his home by pretending they were delivering a package.

Watch this woman suddenly demean & spit on a gay man as he tries to ride the subway

A bystander on the Jubilee line of the London Underground caught a homophobic attack on film as one rider used anti-gay slurs and spit on another passenger.

The video of the apparently intoxicated woman, originally reported by the Daily Mail, was provided by an unnamed onlooker who said that the attack was unprovoked..

The short clip shows the woman shouting at a passenger while several other riders look on.

At the beginning of the clip, she tells the man, “because you’re gay I’m gonna be like, ‘nah, he’s gay, just let him go?’ No! Because you’re gay, even more, I’m going to violate you.”

Most Jamaicans want to keep same-sex activity illegal

New research has showed most Jamaicans want to still keep the ban on gay sex.

LGBTI organisation, the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG), commissioned the research.

It found between seven and 30% of the population identified as LGBTI. The research also found that 97% of people had very little understanding of trans people and trans issues.

‘Over the last couple of years, we have seen some improvement in the situation where LGBT people are concerned. I think there is respect and tolerance for the community, but we are still a very far way from where we need to go,’ J-Flag’s executive director, Jaevion Nelson told a Gleaner forum.

Nelson said bullying and discrimination was still a huge issue for LGBTI people. But he felt heartened by findings that 68% of employers and 88% of politicians would report violence against LGBTIs. But only 34% of the general public would do so.

Why do so many gay men feel lonely? A life coach gives the unfiltered truth

The gay men I work with range from their 20s to 50s. The guys in their 20s are often more attuned to coaching. They’re proactive about their growth and preempt problems by making informed choices. They can be savvy about the need for personal investment.

For older guys, certain issues come up regularly. They include learning to thrive as a gay man as they get older, finding meaningful work and creating authentic connections.

Greg Berlanti Says Gay Execs Stopped Him From Casting Gay Actors

GREG BERLANTI OPENED UP ABOUT HOLLYWOOD’S INTERNALIZED HOMOPHOBIA.

LGBTQ representation on television is at an all-time high. Sadly, many queer actors are only cast as characters that match their identities. For that reason, many out creatives advocate for reserving those roles for queer talent. Without saving those roles for LGBTQ actors, many gifted queer actors would never get cast at all.

Transport for London bans adverts from 11 countries over anti-LGBTQ laws

Transport for London has banned adverts from several countries with poor human rights records.
According to the Evening Standard, a total of 11 countries are affected by the ban, which comes into place after Green Party London Assembly member Caroline Russell wrote to Mayor Sadiq Khan with concerns about them.

Last month, it was reported that the transport network would remove adverts promoting Brunei after the south-east Asian nation implemented a strict new law that will see LGBTQ people killed for same-sex relations.

This notoriously homophobic pastor has been caught running a hellish private school

A Christian school in Harlem has been feeding students rabid homophobia for years.

The Atlah World Missionary Church is run by Pastor James Manning, who is best known for some of his appearances on The Daily Show where he claimed that Barack Obama was “Hitler” and that Starbucks puts “gay semen” in its lattes.

The church is listed as an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

San Diego LGBT Center Urged to Hire Armed Guards After Hate Attacks

Following two separate shootings — both seemingly targeting marginalized groups — an influential San Diego City Commissioner is calling for the city's LGBT center to hire armed guards.

Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez grew concerned following this weekend's shooting at a San Diego-area synagogue where one woman was killed, as well as a shooting in February at a San Diego restaurant heavily patronized by LGBTQ customers. The former shooter was an anti-Semite and the latter had written antigay comments on his Facebook page.

United Methodist Church Affirms Anti-LGBTQ Policies

The United Methodist Church’s Judicial Council has upheld the anti-LGBTQ policies adopted by delegates to the denomination’s General Conference in February.

The so-called Traditional Plan maintains the church’s ban on the ordination of what it calls “self-avowed homosexuals,” even though there are many gay United Methodist clergy members, largely closeted. It also retains the denomination’s opposition to same-sex marriage. Clergy members who perform same-sex weddings can be suspended without pay the first time they do so and can be expelled the second; this is the first time penalties have been spelled out.

The plan adds an exit mechanism for congregations disagreeing with these positions. They can leave the denomination if two-thirds of members vote to take such action and if the congregation meets certain financial obligations.

How the Supreme Court Case on LGBT Rights Could Set Us Back Decades

It’s been almost four years since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage for everyone, and yet, anti-LGBT discrimination remains a real problem in much of this country. In a majority of states, LGBT folks can be fired or otherwise discriminated against for no reason other than their sexual orientation or gender identity. That may change though, as yesterday the Supreme Court agreed to hear three cases that could fix this problem — or possibly set anti-discrimination law back decades.

How is it that anti-LGBT job discrimination is still allowed? Well, we can blame Congressional Republicans for that. Every time Democrats have attempted to change Title VII — the federal law that protects against discrimination in employment — to include sexual orientation and gender identity, they have been met with fierce opposition from Republicans.

Bisexual high school baseball player calls out opponent for gay slur

My name is Sam Culwell. I’m a straight A student, I play baseball for Rondout Valley’s varsity team, and as a matter of fact I’m the captain. I’ve played baseball since I was 4, and I’ve loved it ever since. Training year round is fun to me, and there’s nothing like going up to the field with my teammates after school for a game or practice. 13 years of playing baseball and I was fortunate enough to find a great college program that I feel comfortable playing at.

Last year I came out as bisexual, and in a small school like mine, it came with it’s struggles. Luckily enough, I have helped to change my friend’s and my school’s views on sexuality and sports.... that is to say there’s no reason to discriminate against an athlete for this reason, and I want to be judged based on my abilities, sportsmanship, and effort. I’m better than I’ve ever been because of hard work both on the field and in learning to accept myself. Today my team played Marlboro, which is our biggest rival. I came in to relieve our pitcher after he threw 4 1/3 great innings. We were losing 4-1 and as expected, I was pitching well and got out of the inning.

Next inning rolls around and my coach came out to the mound to just give me a breather. At this point I had already struck out one batter and as my coach comes up to talk to me all I hear from the opposing dugout is “tell him he’s a failure and a faggot” it took all of my composure to not break down on the spot.

Neighbors come together after Charleston family's pride flag is burned

A family in Charleston, South Carolina, said their rainbow pride flag was torn down from the front of their house and burned in their driveway last weekend.

“We were taken aback and thought, ‘Wow, somebody must be really bothered by this to go to this end here to do this.’ But we called the police to let them know about it,” the homeowner, who lives with his wife and three young children, told NBC News.

“There's people on our street that have South Carolina flags, United States flags, different college flags, garden flags … obviously the rainbow is what attracted them to ours,” the homeowner, who asked that his name not be printed to protect his family’s safety and privacy, added. “I wouldn't be surprised if the people who did this didn't even know who we were or who lived in the home, that it was just the fact that it was a rainbow flag, and they didn't agree with that.”
