Bewitched (1964-1972) Full Moon

...because Tabitha (Erin Murphy) was an adorable moppet
...because Aunt Clara (Marion Lorne) was squishier than my dog
...because Dick York (Darrin) was such the professional that we never noticed the pain he was in 26-Jun-2018
...because Samantha stood for every unappreciated group that the child in me could figure out
...because it can't be sexist if its a "happy couple"
...because even when the fx failed them they never deferred from perfection... because for every three they missed they got one so perfectly right
...because Paul Lynde was a great gay uncle when they weren't allowed to socially exist
...because ever since this show capitalized on what magic should be we have been pretending that magic doesn't exist (except in realistic boring conjuring ways)
...because Gladys Kravitz (Alice Pearce) and the artist who created her epitomized the nosy neighbor until she became understood
...because Endora (Agnes Moorehead) is the lesbian Drag mother-in-law we deserve
...because Elizabeth Montgomery can kick Harry Potter's ass with just one twitch. 21-Jun-2018

A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) Full Moon

The message millions of Americans will deliver but none will process.

I'm not a magic splatterer but when art transcends it, you'll believe whatever you have to believe to see peace. 01-Dec-2017

It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) Howl

Snoopy's "Red Baron" has always seemed like an interruption to me and my feelings will never change. It's an adult's personal reference in a show devoid of any.

What still kicks in is a child's inscrutable magical belief system, when life is not offering any, that keeps him plugged in. Well served. 23-Oct-2017

Julia (1968 - 1971) Woof

I watched Julia as a kid with wild eyed wonder. There was a dark skinned mother making history on TV unlike my own that was representing. Sometimes as a Latin community we forget that all the shades we are borne from that the familial take for granted, the rest of the world compartmentalizes. I allowed this TV family to transport me out of the ghetto to a world of interracial harmony and inclusivity. It had inspired me to dream.

I was aware of its history but I wasn't privy to its controversy because I didn't want to watch a show with a one way ticket whose train screeched to a halt at poverty. I never understood how Flip in a dress spoke to the black community whilst Julia insulted it.

Revisiting it as an adult, though details were long lost, the feelings of warmth, innocence and quiet remain. The writers were not adept at making Julia wholly uncontrolled or a heedful parent but Diahann gave her eloquence, ferocity and refinement. If that's all it has to offer...I'll take it. 17-Feb-2017

Brady Bunch, The (1969 - 1974) Full Moon

The show doesn't pretend to be anything but a bubblegum machine. I'm sure good intent and wishful thinking was in its heart and that's why we forgive any ineptitude. When the gum machine crashes and cracks is when the Bradys evolve into unique portraits of family we can extend our arms to. Not because they are so realistic but because they promise a nirvana that I wasn't able to reach in an abused family environment. Like other delusive scripts, I knew they weren't going to part the sea but I could imagine practicing to be the exceptional person these characters/players fancied themselves and maybe recreate parts of it. I wasn't able to turn water into wine but I could do that.

It is on my best list because like bubble gum they are vibrant in color, unique in flavor and everlasting even when the sugar has been exhausted. They chaperoned and safeguarded me against the fear whilst the real adults in my life generated chaos because it allowed my mind to find sense and hope to be parented. 01-Dec-2016

Lucy Show, The (1962 - 1968) Woof

There were embers of the classic still wafting through the air when Lucy and Viv inaugurated this show. When Viv's sidekick and TV family vacate Lucy enlists patronage from familiars to keep the show afloat. Lucy does not succeed in refreshing the sitcom but she dominates as an all-time lovable character, tenacious competent actor and comedy risktaker. I don't know if the writers were limiting her stunt to classic replays or that she couldn't let go and embrace a different character but how great if they could have swayed her into evolving. She was probably afraid that the more Lucille seeped in the less the audience esteem. She was wrong. No matter the iteration Lucy or Lucille will always feel like home (America.) 23-Nov-2016

Dennis the Menace (1959 - 1963) Woof

Dennis never endears himself to us and its either meant to be or North had one too many elocution lessons. It's not easy to binge-watch as there are way too many episodes. There is a time when the kids take a backseat especially for the antics of the first Mr. Wilson. It is a good history lesson. I found out that immigrants actually didn't take jobs away from any adults as those were chores they gave to boys to keep them out of trouble. This is the family conservatives are dying to revive, where retired men spend most of their time playing with flowers, fish and little boys. 23-Feb-2016

Doris Day Show, The (1968 - 1973) Arf

I was more fond of it as I remembered it but not as I binge-watched. It has multiple personalities. Every season contained a new Doris with new friends and less family. I wished it had stayed in Seasons 1 or 2. There was something very pleasant and very Day about those seasons. The only thing that remains is the love for Doris and the only thing that sustains the binge. 23-Feb-2016

Here's Lucy (1968 - 1974) Woof

The hardest working comedian on TV. The show changes and mixes so many times that its hard to pinpoint what its really about but you'll be damned if you don't admire Ball's resilience to perform and entertain us. The last season does settle into a format, mainly because Lucy is too tired but that's when her real talent shines - acting. You realize she didn't need to do somersaults for us to like her...we just did. 18-Jan-2016
