Designing Women (1986 - 1993)
The characters are strong, the funny keeps you laughing, the writing was pensive, passionate and controversial, the originals were fabulous and a black man in a girl's dress is always funny. Once Suzanne and Charlene depart the sizzle and purpose is gone. A talented trio of actors become shadows of the characters they were replacing without a voice of their own. The fatter Delta Burke got the funnier she became. You can feel the antagonism in the writing though. She was saddled with savage criticism and disdain but her talent was her shield. We could have done with less Julia fits but nobody could sell it like Dixie Carter. She was legs, elegance and conviction. Annie Potts liberated herself and her character. She sounded like she could give birth to a McConaughey. Jean Smart aced dumb and won our hearts. The last two seasons are somber and desperate. TG Alice Ghostley and Mr. Taylor are there to be irreverent and hilarious. 30-Dec-2024
Super Password (1984-2014)
Season One. The season ended as soon as a new vibe was being created. Bert Convy never had a guest star that could surpass him. They were fading stars biding their time until the next best thing. Betty White was a legend never too large for the little people. A trooper of respect and salacious charm, she seemed confused by the new rules. It wasn't her best. I understand. I have a list of horrible words I never want to hear either. The players learned to cheat their way out of complicated puzzles by rhyming. Arf! I can listen to dings, buzzers and RPG town music all day. Bert Convy made us care as soon as he dropped his pretty boy facade and embraced his dirty boy bitch. I will miss you, my afro queen. 13-Mar-2022
The birth of the RPG musical score. 11-Mar-2022
At 14, I entered a beauty salon and asked the stylist to give me an afro like Bert Convy. They took me to an "out of the way" room where special lights constantly fried my hair. Twenty minutes later... with a whiff of matches and dreams of electrocutions, a dingy staff returned to inform me that my afro was done. No warnings. No stylings. They gifted me a pick to take home and train my hair to kink. I did not know burning hair was necessary for "the perfect appropriation." I felt my scalp shrinking. WTF. It precipitated baldness. My fro did not end up "hot," it was very Buckwheat. I preferred being in-between like Bert Convy. Another dream ruined by too much culture mis-awareness. 08-Mar-2022
Nobody game-showed Hamlet like Bert Convy. The whitest host to sport an afro becomes addictive. I must have been "living life" during this era. I remember none of this. The clues are atrocious and the game is fucking difficult. WTF. I don't understand them. Yo, but check out the afro on that white host. He's so cute. 06-Mar-2022
Love Boat, The (1977-1987)
Love Boat existed to keep old Hollywood cranking, practicing and competing. If you were a nice Hollywood legend and the people liked you, it warranted a return. The captain was a snob with a penchant for girl grabs, trans sex and unwarranted political views. Lauren Tewes was a drug inducer whose smile and social activities denied it. Ted Lange kept the drinks shaking and rhyming to romantic beats. Fred Grandy was aptly named Gopher as was Charo. All animals and children have a chance at "coochie coochie" on the high seas. Cruises are meant for cheating not confessing. Why ruin a good marriage over a fuck? Not recommended for children or parents across the world. Beauty is a factor, ugly gets laid, poor people smell, old women drink, gays pretend, extensions don't exist, cultures commiserate, men are pigs, sex is free, meat was eaten, everything is beautiful and all is forgiven. 06-Jul-2021
Married With Children (1987-1997)
I never realized how much female input there was in scouring the marriage of an alpha fucker and our mothers. 15-Apr-2021
Invitation To Hell (1984)
A film better tolerated in the present but a victim of its limitations.
There are golden nuggets:
Wes Craven kept it tight. The spacesuit caper and some action sequences spit art
Soleil Moon Frye does a spot-on imitation of Golem, before his time
La Lucci is a playful and committed demonic force. Tacky with hilarity, bitchiness and nerve
Robert Urich was pretty, in charge and in demand. 26-Jan-2020
Gidget's Summer Reunion (1985)
Little girl feminist revamp. They don't exhibit likeness to any of the original characters but "the feel" is intact. Men prevailed short shorts, everyone oozed good health and greater hair. The environment exuded flexibility. 27-Feb-2019
25,0000 Pyramid, The (1974-1991)
Shelley Smith was a gorgeous brain and the vampire was condescending. 17-Sep-2018
It's a documentation of history. I am awe-struck by how quick witted and intelligent we once were. 09-Aug-2018
Burning Bed, The (1984)
A guideline for women on how impossible it seems for a man to cork violent rage. An artistic awakening for Farrah. 18-Jun-2018
A Very Brady Christmas (1988)
The actors get to spoof their own and nobody owns "so bad, it's good" like the Bradys. 26-Dec-2017
Webster (1983-1989)
It relied on the agreeableness of an adorable moppet. It was blind to color, height, age and privilege. The surprise was the weighty themes the show stockpiled onto the shoulder of its child character and the many hands slapping each other to ride on his success. There are moments when the family starts to mesh and affection becomes inherent but then hand slaps are instituted again and the family dynamic is fully separated by series end as Webster is turned into a bit player. 24-Jul-2017
Cheers (1982-1993)
Endearing wickedness, courtesy of top notch cast and writers. 21-Jul-2017
I'll have a drink with them. 21-Jul-2017
Seinfeld (1989 - 1998)
It fell off my top list because it eschewed a lack of humanity in sitcom that spilled into everyday life. 29-Jun-2017
I rewatched all the seasons except the first one because its irrelevant. The second season is not so great either. There are two and half seasons of greatness and then it coasts and tires. Waiting for something funny and smart to arise again becomes insufferable. Larry David wrote the worst "fuck you" finale ever but who is it directed to? The audience, production or the cast? That is the question. 19-Sep-2015
Simpsons, The (1989-)
Bright, endearing and colorful sabotaged by no end. 15-Feb-2017
Soap (1977-1981)
Mostly Jessica Tate. 21-Jul-2017
Roseanne (1988-1997)
A few bad seasons aside, blue collar badness. 21-Jul-2017
