Firstborn (1984)
Michael Apted takes a serious and realistic approach to the venomous step-parents that single parents bring home because they're lonely. Terri Garr adds manic depression to a woman whose future options are crumbling. She latches on to leeches that pay her false attention. The brothers do a great job of conveying how invasive "new dad" feels at different stages of a boy's life. Real dad is fucking twinksies and getting them pregnant so he can replace them. Peter Weller's lips were artistically meant for masks and unmentionable things. Unmasked he's hair, eyes, hips and wickedly intimidating. He dispenses sexual tension and satisfaction whenever he punishes the boys. Scary uncle syndrome. Baby Corey was the younger brother whose life as a victim made him stronger than he thought. Baby Jessica Parker aced acting classes but failed the fashion academy. I don't know if Baby Downey Jr.'s character was supposed to be gay. If they intimated it I missed it. Boy acted like he was trolling for dick. 06-Apr-2024
Chosen, The (1981)
Jewish boys entangle friendship with identity, religion, tradition and politics. It's a pensive film that details opposing sides of a general consensus. They want their culture to thrive. The boys are genuine. Robby Benson casts his teenage dream aside and aces a cold and precise believer. The parents make some good points. A boy can't become a man without tremendous change. 07-Nov-2021
Hell House (1981)
An unaccomplished masterpiece disguised as a fraud. The fright was fraught with reason. Background was eerily traced. Twinks were luminescent and Linda Blair never flinched but the budget limited its art. 04-Nov-2021
Deadly Friend (1986)
Boy genius, pal robot and single mom move to a new town. Boy makes friends, robot becomes creepy but boy finds "where his heart ought to be." Bullies, pranks, killings and deaths erase his best friend and "where his heart ought to be." He puts the robot chip into girl brain and revives her, except "where his heart ought to be" is hollow. She is overprotective, wifed and destructive. There is no balance as to which mentality is winning. She's a killer robot. The movie's charms outweighed its incomprehension. Anne Ramsey rained Halloween as a tormented neighbor who hated everybody. Matthew Laborteaux kept things hairy. Kristy Swanson kept things calm. Wes Craven signed it. The basketball was everything. It's stupid trash with enough bits of imagination to create enjoyment. 20-Oct-2021
Seventh Sign, The (1988)
God was so angry with us in the 80s that he sent seven signs to warn us he was on a path of annihilation and made Demi Moore and her baby carry the burden. If she can fulfill enough of God's contracts she can accomplish the "save the world" prophecies in the bible. Moore's luminescence and chemistry is wasted on shitty creators. A man can protect the world but only a woman can save it. 04-May-2021
Where The Boys Are (1984)
Cis men will get a hard-on during. 75%. Gay men will get a hard-on going. 55%. Women only see what they want to see. 100%. Romance knows no bounds. Hangover. 13-Feb-2021
Mr. Mom (1983)
Mother/housewife interjects freedom when her husband surprisingly loses his job. Whomever gets a job first will be the breadwinner. He's the mommy and she's the daddy. He doesn't whiz parenting but neither did she. The children don't matter much. "Keep them alive and survive another day" is the motto of the day. Michael Keaton and Terri Garr have star watt which zaps most of the blues away. Their wattage is enough to sell it. 22-Jan-2021
Star 80 (1983)
The tragedy of beauty versus beast. The purpose of beauty is to inspire us. If it touches you, you are beautiful in return. It's that perfect thing that exists like a God smack to the earth. The men want to devour it, the women prefer to absorb it and forget it but the younglings want to marry it at first sight. The sculptor who attempts to shape it, before full bloom, will burn his hands on the coffin he molds around it to keep it safe. A woman will always wake up. Beauty belongs to the world not encapsulated by a man who thinks he's just as beautiful because he licensed it. Fosse snips from Citizen Kane and gives it the hutzpah the classic lacked. Fosse's mastery is beauty, movement, thrill and dash. Eric Roberts gets inside our heads and makes us understand that hot greasy ass motherfucking psycho crooked legged cowboys with great hair have feelings. Fosse resoundingly echos him. Mariel Hemingway is neither thunder or lightning. She is a cloud of beauty that doesn't need announcement. Mariel's innocence allows the tragedy to happen and unfold. It has an ending Tarantino wouldn't touch and the original footage is brutal, salacious and true. Absolutely psycho. 12-Sep-2020
Go Tell It On The Mountain (1985)
Exploring the unity a church provides to a community struggling to stay afloat.
The protagonist is a teenage stepson born out of lust and into parents of mighty faith and little activity. The boy envisions his place in a white world that bestows him educational merit and Hollywood allure. Stepdaddy preacher has white resentment and believes the boy must learn the word of Jesus and disavow all the teachings of the white man so he can claim his benefits afterlife.
Great arguments ensue about what is a sin, enjoyment and a life. Boys don't want to be socked in a church when there is adventure, sex and violence to be had. Fear of community misrepresentation causes the parents to lock children in. (It seems we are always in one prison or other.)
Paul Winfield is the man of sin whose only recompense is Jesus. Blindsided and stubborn he fights to be the master of a household that's always revolting. His authority is frightful, his words are probable and his weapon is God.
The shading of the past to inculcate the steps of the future was tight. When the female actors revolt and exorcise their demons, crazy hungry talent is displayed. The boys were humble with pride.
The end is an exorcism that doesn't coerce any answers but that may be its point. No one knows shit. 21-Jul-2020
Carbon Copy (1981)
A twinkie Denzel catches up with the parental rich white daddy that didn't stay. The daddy is married to a "Karen" that tolerates only forced sex and finds black people a nuisance. It's rude, funny and droll. George Segal keeps racial harmony humming while Washington smashes with broad cymbals. Comfort with a message. 19-Jul-2020
Cutting Class (1989)
Mental health contamination scours a suburban town with blood splatter. The kills work as an after the fact. Neither Brad Pitt's twink beauty supreme or talent could save it. (I figured out the whodunit by studying the killer's arms and hands to no avail. They ridiculously didn't match.)
Trivia: Hollywood's champion cocksucker is in it too. 18-Jul-2020
Monkey Shines (1988)
A fit daddy mentally bound by matriarchy becomes paraplegic. He receives a horrified nurse, a mother pseudo, a no nonsense trainer and a mentally enhanced monkey.
The art of training an animal lives in its soul. The monkey represents the current female to determine his life. The monkey is a frighteningly adorable beast.
George A. Romero packs it with Hitchcock simplicity and sensical horror. Each frame a joy to ponder.
Jason Beghe is an addictive force.
The mother/son spar sliced bluntly.
I lurched, I was engrossed and the end was brutally sweet. 07-Jul-2020
Entity (1982)
Mom is constantly terrorized and sexually assaulted by an unseen entity.
The exploitation becomes void in the hands of Barbara Hershey who issues the attacks with common sense and appropriate care for her children whose humiliation and mental instability is generated by an invasion of supernatural supremacy. She's great.
Ron Silver is smart daddy with precise words, psychological principle and "off the books" consideration.
It scares because the lost of body control is a great one. 27-Jun-2020
River's Edge (1986)
Friendships are unrealized when a mate kills one.
The kids react like chained animals. They're curious, they don't really feel anything but they know it's wrong.
The parents have stopped pretending. The miraculous is a teenager too complicated to bear. The kids may be exploring and exploding in their new life but the parents are just holding on to any kind of life. The parents share their drugs, problems, violence and sexuality. They absolve the kids' of choices they socially incur and never check out what they are.
Crispin Glover was a high that had me swaying all kinds of ways. Good and awful.
Keanu waved his hair back and forth like an urchin destined for greater things.
When the writing goes over, truth reins it in.
The musical score kept the story breathing.
The director pinpointed everything we needed to see and hear. Its aroma was DePalma.
The final analysis for murder is realistic and unjustifiably hard.
Being one of the most sensitive beings in the world does not always grant empathy.
Snitches get laid. (It's a tongue thing.) 25-Jun-2020
Jaws 3 (1983)
The fun stops here. 22-Jun-2020
