Doctor Sleep (2019)
The exploration of the past was literary.
Alex Essoe's spot on Shelley Duvall is impressive because it harmonizes with the film's recognition of Kubrick's obsession with perfection.
It pays homage to the past but the film frees itself from Kubrick's grasp and becomes its own thing, maybe something King had in mind.
I was not impressed by the magicians until they ate a child.
Kids that are special get eaten.
Ewan embodies the spirit of a child.
The cast is multi-verse, the action rips and even though the story veers into its own thing, the return is pretty exciting. 28-Jun-2020
Ad Astra (2019)
Universal travel, planet saving and soaring daddy issues.
The director feeds us unique vistas and exhilarating action but makes us feel like we're riding a bullet train. It spins by, it's amazing, I'm glad I saw it but it didn't mean anything. It had no attachment to the story.
Pitt attacks like it's his story to tell. He's exhausted, full of gruff and self analyzation. It was a most personal rendition.
Tommy Lee is "grand" daddy to everything Pitt did. 22-Jun-2020
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)
Star Wars is one of the most challenging series to keep alive. Each post iteration appearing shiny and new with ardent fandom, bounteous clamor and no history or relevance to match any of the original three. They are only embers of the force.
JJ dropped the soap. Politics clenched the dynamic and criticism quelled his enthusiasm. He did not lend his panoramic to anything past what we would see in a video game.
It spent too much time preaching the force and little time explaining anything else.
Kylo Ren worked better with his mask on. (He was more intimidating.)
Zori Bliss would have worked better with her mask off.
Lando and the phantasms of veteran greats brought the force but the new power was missing a united purpose that would compel them to overcome the awkwardness. You can't expect much from an actor whose belly is full.
Everything old as new is delight, everything new and unthought of is bah...everything new and shiny, rusts. 20-Jun-2020
Misunderstanding the mythology of the "pod people" and mishandling how to apply it to this generation. They twinkled it, legitimized it, repeated it and fudged it.
Social Media is our pod and we are its people.
It arrives from a dead planet. An alien-camouflaging organism that can only do so, temporarily with the environment. It needs a human to survive. I know, I know... make Mexicans immune! You want to scare us, don't you? 20-Jun-2020
Toy Story 4 (2019)
The toys still wonder, crack smiles and grant blessings of a childhood institution from a very long time ago. The adventures became more human, the suffering became internalized, everybody grew up and moved on. Bittersweet. 12-Jun-2020
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Mr. Rogers was part of my baby ghetto but I was never aware of being a fan. He relaxed me, informed me, and chimed the right bells to put a baby to sleep. The movie depends on Tom Hanks delivering the persona of a man who defies goodness. Hanks is perfect in intonation, style and determination but he adds an element of creepiness that only comes with voracious study and involuntary realization. I kept waiting for him to go Joker and annihilate. It ruined it for me. 12-Jun-2020
Uncut Gems (2019)
I feel about jewelry like others feel about watermelons.
The film consisted of many genres, high broiling, at improbable levels. Sandler steadies the flow, not allowing the top to blow off and steering the steam back into action. Talking over each other annoys, the pitch was trembly, the support were emblems, the coincidences were easy to spot and the finale was extensive. It zapped my brain. 28-May-2020
Goldfinch, The (2019)
Boy suffers the loss of his mom, who dies in an explosion, but gains a piece of priceless art. Sarah Paulson has a moment as a bimbo and Nic adds an elegant presence to an adoptive mom but the characters have no foundation for any actor to stem from. The boy, in particular, acts as the scene needs, not as his character would. Ansel achieves a spark because he's trying to understand it as much as we are. It's a hard sell because the mystery doesn't amount to a life altering choice, it just is. A sweet sentiment with absolutely no sugar. 26-May-2020
Chosen Ones, The (2015)
Conning underage girls into sex trafficking by boys/men realizing the fairy tale expectations that mothers inculcate. The subject is severe but the director does not exploit it. He keeps it creative with unseen cuts and human sounds that make the heart race. The heroes are also victims of an establishment that will never recognize a woman's purpose and therefore are powerless to do anything but abet the enemy or become one. Real and disturbing. 20-May-2020
Lighthouse, The (2019)
A psychology whose study is based at its present moment. Dafoe arghs and puffs with superiority and a seasoning of humanity. Pattinson is learning, maturing and blowing things up. A beautiful coupling. 03-May-2020
Frozen II (2019)
Its beauty is deceptive.
There is no thought or flourish to the story and no realism to the dialogue. Children have deeper conversations than this.
They are constantly bombarded by magical things, yet still wonder at the next.
The songs are its enemy. The songwriters write songs for talkers not classically trained singers. The musical artists could not wrap their talent around them. The words weren't tonal or melodious. (A thesaurus might have helped.) Each song was a giant whoopee cushion to the ear.
I wished the snowman had melted. (I'm sorry, I've spent too much time with Gervais.)
The presentation is built to make a grown man cringe.
If it weren't so gorgeous, I'd stop fucking it.

We The Animals (2018)
Neglectful, abusive parenting and the unruly children it creates. Papi squishes to no avail and mama ponders daddy dick so mightily that she relegates the boys to tools of diversion. The boys are cold specimens meandering the world fantasizing in it or fucking with it because they have no life skills. In the end, we are supposed to celebrate a sexual awakening that smells of molestation. I'm not good with that. 26-Apr-2020
I dreaded watching what appeared to be a Harriet Rambo adaptation that would diminish the heroism of a woman determined by life to save others. It does not succeed in bringing either woman to life. Cynthia Erivo has built too many walls to ease comfortably into suffering. The accent wasn't pure because her modern thinking interrupted it. Ms. Erivo forgot that heroes are badass after the fact. The direction is confused, insecure and skittish. You can't do nods to legends (Spielberg, Color Purple) without proper understanding of their work. The music was lovely, but it was constant and better suited for a video game. The performers weren't feeling it, it's not even a good TV film and it should have been a musical. 25-Apr-2020
It: Chapter Two (2019)
The adult actors cannot fulfill the innocence and vibrance of the youngsters which further diminishes the investment in a fretful conclusion. Skarsgard is a sure thing but Muschietti's insistence in piling disconnected scares that belong to a Freddy Krueger franchise, shoves his monster icon status to the shadows. The mumbo was a jumble, the Spielberg didn't fit and the sap broke the vine. 23-Apr-2020
