Woman Gives Suspect Black Eye While Fighting Him Off During Alleged Sexual Assault Attempt

A teen who allegedly tried to physically and sexually assault a woman on St. Patrick’s Day got a prominent shiner after the woman fought back.

The woman was standing outside El Reventon Sports Bar & Club in Deerfield Beach, Florida when she was approached by 18-year-old Henrry Gonzalez-Thomas, according to the Florida Sun-Sentinel. He allegedly solicited her for sex.

“The victim repeatedly told the defendant that she was not a prostitute and attempted to walk around the defendant to approach the nightclub,” a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest report states, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Parents protesting over LGBT+ lessons in Birmingham told they risk attracting ‘extreme fringe movements’

Parents protesting about LGBT+ lessons at a Birmingham primary school have been warned that they risk attracting “extreme fringe movements”, by the city’s council.

The advice came as hundreds signed a petition supporting the school’s diversity programme.

Parents and staff at Parkfield Community School, where most pupils are Muslim, were urged by the council to “come together” amid a row over teachings on same-sex relationships.

It comes after a number of demonstrations by some parents who claim their children are too young for the topic. Some families took their offspring out of the school in protest.

Catholic Church cardinals implicated in sex abuse, cover-ups

The conviction of French Cardinal Philippe Barbarin for failing to report a known pedophile priest to police deepens the crisis confronting an already discredited Catholic Church hierarchy. The verdict handed down by magistrates Thursday shows the church's once-untouchable "princes" increasingly are judged accountable for priests who abuse children and the superiors who allowed the abuse to continue.

After centuries of impunity, cardinals from Chile to Australia and points in between are facing justice in both the Vatican and government courts for their own sexual misdeeds or for having shielded abusers under their watch..

Here is a look at cases implicating Catholic cardinals, members of the exclusive club of prelates that advises the pope and eventually elects his successor.

White Supremacist Propaganda At 'Record-Setting' Levels, ADL Report Finds

At first, you might not realize the flyer was put there by a white supremacy group.

The poster, in shades of black, white and teal, features Andrew Jackson on horseback. The accompanying text reads: "European roots, American greatness."

Flyers like this, posted across the country by American neo-Nazi and white supremacist group Identity Evropa are popping up far more than they used to. Others feature George Washington. According to a new report by the Anti-Defamation League, white supremacy propaganda increased by 182 percent in 2018 compared with the year before.

The increase in flyers and other propaganda reflects a relatively new strategy for hate groups, the ADL says. Under intense scrutiny, white supremacists are reluctant to show their face in public, so they're relying more on leaflets and posters to spread hate without putting themselves at personal risk, it adds.

PRIEST ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ABUSING MALE CHILD FLEES AMERICA

A priest from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland fled the country last month after he was accused of sexually abusing a male minor.

On January 31, the diocese placed father Alex Castillo on administrative leave upon receiving an allegation against him for inappropriate behavior from a child male victim.

Church officials were able to contact Castillo up until February 21, but after that date, several people were unsuccessful in their attempts to reach the embattled priest, diocese spokesperson Helen Osman told SFGate. The diocese then searched for Castillo in every jail and hospital in the area before they finally reported him missing to authorities two days later, on February 23.

More than a third of millennials share Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's worry about having kids while the threat of climate change looms

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made headlines last week when she suggested that some young Americans are concerned about having children because of the threat that climate change could pose to future generations.

"Our planet is going to hit disaster if we don't turn this ship around ... there's scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult," Ocasio-Cortez said on Instagram Live. "And even if you don't have kids, there are still children here in the world, and we have a moral obligation to leave a better world for them."

The 29-year-old New York progressive went on to say young people are grappling with the question: "Is it OK to still have children?"

Gay man sues Washington Teachers Union for discrimination

A gay former employee of the Washington Teachers Union filed a lawsuit in federal court on Sept. 18 accusing the union, its president, and its former chief of staff of subjecting him to a hostile work environment and later firing him because of his sexual orientation.

Upper Marlboro, Md., resident Barry Hobson, 36, charges in the lawsuit that he was subjected to unfair and discriminatory treatment and harassment by WTU’s then chief of staff, Dorothy Egbufor. The lawsuit says Egbufor served as Hobson’s immediate supervisor shortly after he was hired as a receptionist and office assistant on Jan. 15, 2017.

Hobson’s attorneys filed the lawsuit on his behalf in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. In addition to Egbufor, the lawsuit names as defendants Washington Teachers Union President Elizabeth Davis and the union itself, which represents 5,000 D.C. public school teachers.

Sex abuse scandal in German Catholic Church sparks celibacy debate

For a long time now there has been argument within the church in Germany about the obligation for priests to remain unmarried. The sexual abuse scandal has reignited the discussion. A celibacy debate could tear the Catholic Church apart. But perhaps the impetus for reflection about the obligation to remain celibate is not in fact coming from academic reflection or long conferences of German bishops, but from the other side of the ecclesiastical world.

Anti-LGBTQ Groups Sue Louisiana Governor to Stop Drag Queen Story Hour

In an attempt to stop a drag queen story hour event at Lafayette Public Library in Louisiana, two antigay Christian groups have filed suit against the town of Lafayette, the governor of Louisiana, and the library.

Chris Sevier, who with others filed suit on behalf of Warriors for Christ and Special Forces of Liberty, had previously sued five states claiming he had married his computer in New Mexico and they should recognize the union, reports local TV station KATC. Those suits were a stunt to challenge marriage equality. He has filed several other bizarre, unsuccessful suits -- against Apple, claiming that an erroneous URL caused him to develop a pornography addiction, and against members of Congress who displayed Pride flags.
