Landlords skirt COVID-19 eviction bans, using intimidation and tricks to boot tenants

Cash-strapped renters nationwide say their landlords tried to skirt COVID-19 eviction moratoriums by changing locks, removing trash containers so waste piled up and – in one case – attempting to unbolt the front door right off an apartment.

They told state attorneys general that they were kicked out of their homes after landlords accused them of violating tenant rules, like smoking cigarettes inside their units or failing to take the hitches off of their mobile homes.

Like Heidi Stach, who lost her job due to the pandemic and fell behind on rent, they assumed they were protected. But Stach says her landlord found an end-run to Wisconsin’s eviction ban: Instead of starting a court process, he sent her a notice to vacate this summer because he was not renewing her lease.

Brother of Family Fortunes contestant reveals his sister’s X-rated answer to ‘something you put in your mouth but don’t swallow’ (and – yes - it was the rude word most viewers guessed)

A Family Fortunes contestant left viewers stunned with her unexpected and x-rated answer on last night's show.

Kash Popat, 23, of Harrow, left her family in stitches and host Gino D'acampo speechless on the ITV reboot of the family-friendly show when she uttered her answer in a hurry.

Last night's show saw the Wilson family, from Worcester, face off with the Popats of Harrow.

Each family member had to play against someone on the opposite team, and the question Kash and her opponent were asked was: 'Name something you put in your mouth but don't swallow.'

Indigenous woman films Canadian hospital staff taunting her before death

Disturbing video captures nurses in Canada taunting and berating a dying Indigenous woman in the last moments of her life.

Joyce Echaquan, a 37-year-old mother of seven, died Monday after being admitted to a Joliette hospital for stomach pain two days prior. But before her death, she managed to start a Facebook Live video capturing the vitriol, CBC reported.

“You’re stupid as hell,” a nurse says in French as Echaquan squirms in pain, according to the outlet.

“You made some bad choices, my dear,” another nurse says, according to the Guardian. “What are your children going to think, seeing you like this?”

Number of coronavirus cases linked to Maine wedding rises to 123

The number of coronavirus cases linked to an indoor wedding in Maine earlier this month has risen to 123, state health officials confirmed to CBS News.

The Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said early this month that a total of 24 people had contracted COVID-19 linked to the wedding. That number progressively increased to 53, then 87, and now 123 linked infections.

The wedding has also been linked to one death last week from the virus so far.

The Aug. 7 reception was attended by about 65 people, surpassing the state’s 50-person limit. Officials are also investigating if the venue, Millinocket’s Big Moose Inn Cabins and Campground, was in compliance with state health guidelines.

Georgia teen charged with killing her 66-year-old grandmother

A Georgia teen has been charged with murdering her grandmother, authorities said.

Alisha Kianna Pompey, 17, was arrested early Monday after Fayette County deputies found the teen’s grandmother, 66-year-old Dorothy Pompey, dead in the family’s residence at the Four Seasons Mobile Home Park, The Citizen reports.

Deputies were sent to the location for a medical call, but investigators determined domestic violence factored in the elderly woman’s death, Sheriff Barry Babb told the newspaper.

Indians Forced Into Quarantine Are Dying in Lockdown—but Not From Coronavirus

No one noticed when an 82-year-old man, forced into quarantine after returning from a trip to another state, died in his home in the village of Mohammadpur Khala in Uttar Pradesh.

His neighbors, who had refused to go near the man’s house out of fear he had brought back the coronavirus with him, only noticed something was wrong when the stench from his decomposing body became overwhelming.

Elsewhere in India, farmers are taking their own lives because they can’t get laborers to harvest their crops. Police are accused of beating lockdown violators to death. Migrant workers are dropping dead after being forced to walk hundreds of miles home. Alcoholics are dying from drinking methanol because all alcohol sales have been banned. Children are dying of starvation.

Millennials Don’t Stand a Chance

Hello, lost generation.

The Millennials entered the workforce during the worst downturn since the Great Depression. Saddled with debt, unable to accumulate wealth, and stuck in low-benefit, dead-end jobs, they never gained the financial security that their parents, grandparents, or even older siblings enjoyed. They are now entering their peak earning years in the midst of an economic cataclysm more severe than the Great Recession, near guaranteeing that they will be the first generation in modern American history to end up poorer than their parents.

Recessions are not good for anyone, from infants to the elderly. Nor are pandemics. Americans born during this calamity will be more likely to have low birth weights and to be in poor health generally, with lifelong effects. Children will not just endure this trauma—manifested in lost months of schooling, skipped meals, housing volatility, and increased abuse—but will carry it with them. Zoomers graduating into the recession will die sooner because of it, suffering increased incidence of heart disease, lung cancer, liver disease, and drug overdoses in the coming decades; they will also earn less over the course of their lives. The elderly are likely to be the most economically insulated group but are facing the most terrifying health consequences.

Among adults the news isn’t good, either. And particularly not for those youngish-but-no-longer-young adults who came into this crisis already vulnerable, already fragile, already over-indebted and underpaid. The Millennials were left with scars during the Great Recession that never quite healed, and inherited an economy structured to manufacture precarity for the young and the poor and black and brown, and to perpetuate wealth for the old and the rich and white.

Coronavirus hits poor, minority communities harder

The coronavirus doesn't discriminate, but minorities and low-income families are bearing the brunt.

Why it matters: The impact of the coronavirus is reflecting the racial and socioeconomic disparities of the cities where it’s spreading and the health care system that’s struggling to contain it.

The big picture: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week called the virus “the great equalizer,” because anyone can get it. And while it’s true everyone’s at risk, New York itself is a stark illustration of just how unequal the virus’ toll really is.

The highest concentration of cases in New York City are in neighborhoods in Queens with large immigrant populations and low average incomes, according to city data analyzed by the Wall Street Journal.

And New York is not alone.

By the numbers: Nationwide demographic data aren’t available, and the quality of state and local recordkeeping varies widely. But the clear trend in preliminary data from multiple metro areas is hard to ignore.

The county that contains Charlotte, N.C. is about 33% black, but black residents make up roughly 44% of its coronavirus cases, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Entire senior home in New Jersey, 94 people, presumed to have coronavirus

An entire New Jersey nursing home is presumed to be infected with coronavirus, forcing everyone from the facility to be evacuated on Wednesday, officials said.

At least 24 of 94 residents and patients of St. Joseph’s Senior Home in Woodbridge, about 20 miles south of Newark, have tested positive for coronavirus and the other 70 clients are also believed to have the virus, authorities said.

The first positive came back on March 17 and at least one positive test has come back "everyday thereafter," said John Hagerty, a spokesman for the city of Woodbridge.

Elderly Woman ‘In Tears’ At Empty Supermarket Highlights Panic Buying Crisis

Countries around the world have witnessed unprecedented panic buying at supermarkets and pharmacies due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Aisles have been stripped bare every day as many try to get enough food to last them through a two week self-isolation.

However, there have been some people who have been greedier than others.

As a result, loads of shoppers have been left to get whatever is left and, in some cases, leave nearly empty handed with no idea how they'll get their groceries.

That was highlighted in a heartbreaking picture of an elderly woman in Australia standing in front of cleared out shelves that used to hold canned foods.

Channel 9's Seb Costello shared the picture on social media of the devastating reality that is facing many people across Australia and the world.

He reported the woman was left in tears at the bare aisles.

My Husband Is Very, Very Bad in Bed

Yes, I am in marriage counseling—but our marriage counselor is uncomfortable talking about sex. He’s great with helping us communicate better, but he just does not cover that area of things. Yes, I know there is such a thing as a sex counselor, and no, my insurance doesn’t cover any that I’ve been able to find. Yes, I’ve tried to teach my husband where my clitoris is. We’ve been married for five years, and he cannot be dissuaded from thinking it’s my urethra, which, ow. Yes, I’ve tried teaching my husband to touch me gently, but anytime he tries, it’s not only NOT my clitoris, but it’s also way too rough. He will not learn.

My question is whether all men are like this—because in my dating life, they all were—or whether it’s worth it to try to have an affair. For me, sex has always been all risk and no reward. I have become deeply cynical in this area. But there is a little tiny sprig of hope that makes me wonder: What if there is a reward to be had? What if some straight men are interested in the clitoris and understand how to operate it? What if I can have an orgasm with someone else before I die? That reward would be worth the risk.

Trans Woman Tracy Single Murdered in Houston

Transgender woman Tracy Single has been murdered in Houston, making her death the 16th known homicide of a trans American this year, with all but one victim being Black women.

She was found dead in a gas station parking lot July 30, but she wasn’t identified publicly until later. It took a week for the Houston Police’s LGBT liaison to confirm that she was a trans woman, and activist Dee Dee Watters organized a town hall meeting last Sunday that led to Single being identified by name, the blog TransGriot reports. She was 22. How she died has not been reported, but local news reports said her death was a homicide.

Woman Burns Children Alive, Kills Self After Being Beaten By Husband

A woman set her two children on fire before killing herself after her husband beat her up. The incident took place Wednesday in Ghaziabad, a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Police said the woman, in her 30s, poured a combustible liquid on herself and her two children. She then set herself and the young children on fire. While the woman and her 2-year-old daughter died, her 6-year-old son was able to escape and is currently being treated for burn injuries at a hospital.

Local police were informed about the incident by the neighbors. Police arrived at the scene and rushed the three people to the hospital where the mother and daughter were declared dead. Police officer Naresh Kumar Jadon said the boy was in very critical condition.

Lesbian couple confesses to butchering their child ‘because he wanted to be a girl’

Warning: The crimes these women are accused of are horrific and this article contains graphic details.

A mother and her lesbian partner are accused of castrating and beheading a 9-year-old child “because he wanted to be a girl.” But what the two women did next makes the horrific killing even more shocking.

Mum Rosana Cândido, 27, and Kacyla Pessoa, 28, have confessed to Brazilian police that Cândido’s child, Rhuan, died after extreme abuse. Rhuan’s father told authorities that Cândido fled with the child five years ago.

Reportedly, Rhuan was a product of rape and his mother said she “felt hatred and no love” for the child.

After Rhuan said they wanted to be a girl, the women are accused of castrating the child and ripping off his penis.
