LGBTQ students consider quitting college at an alarming rate

More than 1 in 4 LGBTQ college students have considered dropping out of school because of mental health challenges, a survey released Thursday shows.

And a vast majority of LGBTQ students – 92% – say their mental health status has negatively impacted some part of their college experience.

Why are people so horrible to each other, especially people in the same community? Experts theorize it's a combination of factors related to the rise of social media, a generation unburdened by the worst of the AIDS epidemic and changing laws and acceptance of LGBTQ+ people. As common enemies and threats fall away gay men may turn against each other to cope with their traumas, from lighthearted memes to cyberbullying to even the aforementioned revenge porn.

‘Many times, elders go back into the closet’

As the LGBTQ population ages, and seeks health services, whether for physical or mental health needs, Moone said clinics and providers that are truly welcoming to the LGBTQ community will be more important than ever. “Providers can’t just slap a rainbow flag on the front door. Sure, that’s a cue about the culture of the provider, but more welcoming avenues are still needed,” he said.

Some of these signals to LGBTQ patients include waiting room images of same-sex and nonbinary couples, literature that provides actionable and appropriate resources on topics relative to health and aging, and accurate language on clinic intake forms.

As an asexual person, I can often feel excluded from the wider LGBTQ+ community. It can feel as if we are tolerated rather than welcomed, and sometimes even like we’re outright rejected. Having our validity disputed by LGBTQ+ peers is the most hurtful form of exclusion I have experienced.

Just this weekend, five men were arrested after a giant brawl broke out on the beach, leaving one person stabbed and another with a broken ankle. Both victims were hospitalized.

Earlier in the week, 32-year-old Jawann Dwayne Garnett, who police say is homeless, was arrested after violent attacks on three female beachgoers. He has since been charged with attempted rape and attempted murder.

America's mass shooting hotspots revealed

America's mass shooting hotspots have been revealed in a first-of-its-kind map — and they aren't necessarily where most people own guns.

Researchers at the University of Colorado looked at 4,011 mass shootings — defined as four or more gun deaths, not including the shooter — between 2014 and 2022.

They broke down the massacres in each state by population size to calculate a rate — to allow for a more fair comparison.

Meat eaters get hit hardest as inflation sees grocery bills soar

Milk is more expensive according to 51 percent of those surveyed; for prepared foods it is 50 percent of those questioned and for seafood 49 percent.

A quarter said they are buying less red meat as a result of the price hikes. Meat prices rocketed by up to 25 per cent last spring, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when meat plans were hit by staff shortages caused by the virus.

They subsequently dropped, but Bloomberg's data suggests shoppers are once again feeling the pinch.

Morning Consult economist John Leer told Bloomberg: 'We’ve got these pockets of inflation without having corresponding wage growth, and that’s going to put consumers in a really tough spot.'

For Hispanic and black Americans, more than 40 per cent report spending more money on food since the start of 2021. For white Americans that figure is 30 percent.

"Hinduphobia"

The cluster of anti-Indian and anti-Hindu incidents come soon after the release of a recent study from Rutgers University’s Network Contagion Lab that found that anti-Hindu feeling is on the rise. In a briefing on Thursday hosted by the Coalition of Hindus of North America, Joel Finkelstein, the project’s lead researcher, pointed to memes and online social cyber signals referring to perceived “dirty” and “scamming” qualities of Hindus, as well as depictions of Hindus being brutalized. Many of the memes, he said, were manufactured out of commonly used tropes against Jewish people, using tilaks, swastikas and bindis to signify Hindu culture.
