Older LGBTQ workers face special jeopardy from widespread workplace ageism
Last June’s surprising Supreme Court decision granting LGBTQ employees protection under federal law would seem to put an end to workplace discrimination. But if you’re 50 or older, you may still experience an equally invidious form of discrimination: ageism.
According to a 2018 AARP survey, about three in five workers have experienced age discrimination in their jobs. A whopping 76 percent worried that ageism would hurt their job hunting. That fear is well-grounded. An analysis of employment data by the Urban Institute and ProPublica found that half of older workers were pushed out of jobs and 90 percent of them ended up taking a pay cut when they were finally rehired.
Being an older LGBTQ worker can make things even worse. Out LGBTQ workers have already had to deal with much higher levels of job discrimination and wage disparities. Now, despite the promise of job protections for being LGBTQ, they are finding that the pervasive problem of ageism serves as yet another threat to their careers and financial security.
Worsening the problem is the internalized ageism that many older LGBTQ people carry. A 2015 study of 312 gay men with an average age of 61 found that many felt aging was harder due to the perception that gay men primarily value younger men. No doubt, some of that carries over into the workplace as well.

Gay Ex-Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet charged with corruption
BY KAREN OCAMB / The long Palm Spring sun seems to be setting on Steve Pougnet, the one-time fair-haired gay politico who served two terms as mayor and vigorously but unsuccessfully ran for Congress against Mary Bono in 2010. On Thursday, the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office filed a criminal complaint alleging that Pougnet took $375,000 in bribes from two real estate developers in exchange for favorable votes for the two years between September 2012 and September 2014.
Pougnet, 53, is being charged with nine counts of receiving bribes, eight counts of conflict of interest as a public official and three counts of perjury, according to extensive reporting by the Desert Sun. District Attorney Mike Hestrin also said that developers John Wessman and Richard Meaney were each charged with nine counts of offering a bribe and all three are charged with conspiracy to commit bribery. Pougnet faces a possible maximum sentence of 19 years in state prison if convicted on all charges. If they are convicted, Meaney, 51, and Wessman, 78, could each face a potential 12 years in state prison.

With the help of her husband (the boy’s stepfather), they carried the body to a field near Highway José Fregonezi in Cravinhos and burned it. Lozano’s grandmother reported his disappearance and began to suspect the mother’s responsibility. Authorities discovered the teenager’s charred body on January 7.

According to the Albert Kennedy Trust and Stonewall Housing, some young LGBT people are being “beaten out of their homes” while others are being sent abroad in an attempt to cure them of their homosexuality.

A teen who posed for a flip-the-bird selfie from his hospital bed after butchering a high-ranking British civil servant he met on a gay dating app was found guilty of the barbaric attack on Tuesday.
Ben Bamford, 18, who met customs official Paul Jefferies, 52, on Grindr in 2014, stabbed him more than 40 times while “desperate” for money to settle drug debts, The Guardian reported.
Jefferies was found naked in February with a towel over his head lying in a pool of blood on his kitchen floor in Mayfield, East Sussex.

About 9 p.m. March 26, 79-year-old Kuem Soon Cho gave the keys to her 2005 Chrysler minivan to her 13-year-old grandson to help her place the minivan in gear in a parking lot in the 9200 block of Maryland Street, CBS Chicago reports Niles police said at the time.
The grandson shifted the vehicle in reverse and his foot accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, police said. Cho was walking up to open the driver’s side door at the time and was struck by the minivan.

Both men met each other in Malaysia’s Johor Bahru 9 years ago, and the accused moved to Singapore that very same year upon the victim’s request.
However, the relationship unexpectedly deterioriated in 2012, when the accused wanted to be publicly recognised as the victim’s partner. The victim wanted to keep their relationship low-profile, especially from his immediate family.
