Salvation Army slaps ‘gag order’ on employees so they don’t talk about LGBTQ issues

“If you run into a Salvation Army bell ringer this Christmas season, don’t strike up a conversation about President Trump or gay marriage,” warns FOX News host Todd Starnes is telling his audience.

Starnes says employees “have been told to stop posting their opinions about gay marriage, abortion or anything political on social media because it might reflect poorly on the organization.”

The far right pundit says he has leaked copies of internal memos from the home office to staffers instructing them to keep mum about controversial topics.

The religious charity has come under fire in the United States over the past decade for their atrocious record on LGBT rights. To attempt to stem the ongoing outrage over the group’s previous stances on LGBT issues, they started a public relations campaign to deny that they are anti-LGBT while never acknowledging their history.

Customers Are Opting 'Out' of In-N-Out After $25,000 Donation to Republican Party

Opponents of the GOP are calling for an In-N-Out boycott after the burger chain donated thousands to the California Republican Party.

According to a public filing on the California Secretary of State’s website, the fast food corporation gave $25,000 to the state’s Republican Party on Tuesday. However, the news of the donation didn’t start to go viral until the filing was tweeted out by Washington, D.C.-based reporter Gabe Schneider the next day.

It’s Not Just Abortion, Birth Control Coverage Is Also in Jeopardy

But something that’s not getting as much attention is the fact that a more conservative court could rule against employers having to cover birth control and family planning clinics having to offer it. The potential intersection of reduced access to birth control and restricted abortion rights could set up a perfect storm of more unintended pregnancies and fewer places for women to access safe, legal abortion. Maternal death rates in the US are already too high, and the combination of some women being forced to carry an unintended pregnancy to term and likely delaying prenatal care and some women seeking abortions from unsafe providers could lead to even more women dying—particularly women of color and low-income women.

Supreme Court rules for faith-based pregnancy centers, blocks California disclosure law

The Supreme Court on Tuesday blocked enforcement of a California law that requires faith-based crisis pregnancy centers to notify patients that the state offers subsidized medical care, including abortions.

By a 5-4 vote, the justices said the disclosure rule likely amounts to compelled speech that violates the 1st Amendment. The court did not strike down the California law, but sent the case back to lower courts with instructions that enforcement of key provisions be immediately blocked while the legal challenge continues.

The Next Time You Crave Chicken, Remember That Chick-fil-A Is Still Very Much Anti-Gay

In September 2012, after years of publicly opposing same-sex marriage and donating millions to anti-LGBTQ groups, Chick-fil-A — the Christian-founded fast-food chain known for their chicken sandwiches and billboards of half-literate cows encouraging folks to “EAT MOR CHIKIN” — said that it had “ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights.”

According to ThinkProgress, the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s most recent IRS filings from 2015 reveal hundreds of thousands in donations to anti-LGBTQ groups. They gave $1 million to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a religious organization with “a strict ‘sexual purity’ policy, prohibiting any ‘homosexual acts.'”

They also donated $200,000 to the Paul Anderson Youth Home, a Georgia-based group that runs a “Christian residential home for troubled youth.” The organization believes that the “sexual, physical and mental abuse of children” resulted in “the explosion of homosexuality in the last century.”

Tennessee store puts “no gays allowed” sign back up after Supreme Court’s wedding cake ruling

A Tennessee hardware store owner is celebrating the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple by posting a "no gays allowed" sign in front of his business.

Jeff Amyx, who owns Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies in Grainger County, Tennessee, initially put up the sign in 2015 after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage but later removed it following public backlash.

But the "no gays allowed" sign returned this week after the recent Supreme Court's decision, WBIR reports.

Noted Competent Man Scott Pruitt’s Latest Scandal Involves Chick-fil-A

Beleaguered Environmental Protection Agency Chief Scott Pruitt — who’s currently under more than a dozen ethical investigations surrounding everything from travel expenses to lobbying rules to housing arrangements to mattress purchases — at least thinks of others from time to time. Today, the Washington Post reports that among the slew of potential ethics violations committed after he took office, Pruitt once enlisted an EPA aide to try to land his wife a Chick-fil-A franchise.

According to WaPo, Pruitt requested a meeting with Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy. Though that phone call never took place, Pruitt did speak to a member of the Chick-fil-A legal department to express “interest in his wife becoming a Chick-fil-A franchisee,” company representative Carrie Kurlander told the Post. Marlyn Pruitt apparently started, but never completed, the official application.

Planned Parenthood cancels abortions in Arkansas after restrictive law is reinstated

Planned Parenthood has been canceling abortion appointments for women in Arkansas this week, after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to a state law restricting the procedure.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday effectively let Arkansas' law restricting medication abortions — in which women are given pills that cause a process similar to a miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy — go back into effect, making Arkansas the only state to restrict use of the abortion pills.

Here’s What Happens When A Catholic Hospital Won’t Try To Save You

The Trump administration is poised to hand religious conservatives another victory: a slew of new federal rules that would give religious health care providers wide latitude to refuse to treat patients or perform procedures if doing so would violate their religious beliefs.

Some of the most powerful hospital networks in the country have lobbied for these “conscience” rules, claiming they shouldn’t fear a legal risk for practicing medicine according to their religious beliefs. But those same hospital networks are already using religious justifications to place women in life-threatening situations with impunity, documents obtained by HuffPost show.

At a hospital owned by Ascension, the largest Catholic hospital network in the country and a staunch proponent of a rule that would give nearly any health care worker the right to refuse care, doctors refused to intervene as a woman was undergoing a life-threatening miscarriage because they believed that doing so would be the same as performing an abortion, the documents show. Instead, they carted her out to the hospital parking lot so a relative could drive her to a different emergency room, where she underwent a massive blood transfusion and emergency surgery.

People are threatening to boycott Starbucks over its holiday cup's 'gay agenda' — but the controversy was invented by the media (SBUX)

People are freaking out over a Starbucks boycott that has essentially been invented by the media.

Last week, BuzzFeed News published an article with the headline "Is Starbucks' New Holiday Cup Totally Gay?"

The article was based on an ad campaign that came out in late October and featured what appears to be one lesbian couple — among other couples — and fewer than 10 tweets, most of them extremely tongue-in-cheek. Last week, Business Insider could only find a single tweet —with zero likes and retweets — that expressed negative sentiments about what BuzzFeed News called the holiday cup's "gay agenda."

How tax breaks help the rich

President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress hope to give the US tax code its biggest overhaul in 30 years. Trump says their goal is “to make the tax code simpler and more fair for everyday Americans.”

But their plan would keep three tax breaks that benefit the wealthiest Americans: the mortgage interest deduction, the charitable deduction, and the preferred rate for capital gains.

These tax breaks are incredibly expensive. Each year, the mortgage interest and charitable deductions cost the US Treasury $100 billion and $70 billion, respectively. That’s more than we spend on Head Start, the federally funded preschool program, and on Pell Grants for low-income students to go to college.

Cards Against Humanity buying plot of land on border to try to stop Trump's wall

The company that makes Cards Against Humanity is trying to prevent President Trump's proposed border wall from being built by purchasing a plot of vacant land along the country's border.

"Donald Trump is a preposterous golem who is afraid of Mexicans. He is so afraid that he wants to build a twenty-billion dollar wall that everyone knows will accomplish nothing," a statement said on the website Cards Against Humanity Saves America.

"So we’ve purchased a plot of vacant land on the border and retained a law firm specializing in eminent domain to make it as time-consuming and expensive as possible for the wall to get built."

Fox News Revenues Nosedive Despite Trump’s Constant Viewing

Fox News is having trouble keeping its advertisers happy.

Ad revenues plunged 17 percent in September over the same month last year, according to the most recent financial data for the operation.

Statistics from the Standard Media Index, which tracks media income, showed that Fox News took the biggest hit of any cable news operation. CNN, which President Donald Trump frequently describes as “fake news,” lost just 1 percent in revenue, and MSNBC was up 2 percent.

Cable news revenue was down an average of 7 percent for the entire third quarter (July, August, September) over the same period last year, Ad Week reported.

Costs for 30-second advertising spots rose in September over the same month last year for MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show” (up from $3,800 to $4,600), “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” (up from $3,100 to $3,700) and “All In With Chris Hayes” (from $2,700 to $3,300).

Dr. Sanjay Gupta's dire warning on Puerto Rico

In medicine, there is a meeting that takes place behind closed doors, where doctors openly discuss their cases, including any complications or unfortunate deaths.

It's always an indelible experience for me as I watch some fellow physicians defend their actions, while others quickly admit to their mistakes or judgment lapses. No matter the circumstances, though, none of us ever want to hear the term "preventable death."

When that happens, it's an admission of failure and a breakdown of our entire medical system. In all my years of attending these meetings, I've only heard the term on a few rare occasions. Each time, it's caused the room to go stone silent.

Yet in Puerto Rico I have heard the term several times a day, every day, as local doctors, mayors and citizens worry that many of the most vulnerable citizens are at risk, mostly due to a failure of a timely, coordinated response by the authorities, both federal and territorial.

Why Kristen Bell Isn’t Into The Whole Santa Claus Thing

During the interview, she said they don’t plan on pushing the whole Santa Claus narrative on their daughters too aggressively.

“We have to tell our kid that one night a year breaking and entering is OK and that a dude in a jumpsuit is going to come down the chimney and is going to rifle through our stuff, but it’s OK because he’s going to leave us gifts?” Bell said. “That’s a crazy story to tell your child.”
