Celebrity quarantine posts are inflaming tensions between the haves and have-nots
In recent weeks, Anatasia Army, 33, has kept tabs on celebrity social media exploits from the safety of her Brooklyn apartment. She saw when billionaire David Geffen shared his hope that “everyone is staying safe” in an Instagram post uploaded from his $590 million superyacht. And when comedian Ellen DeGeneres compared quarantine to “being in jail.” Most recently, she watched House Speaker Nancy Pelosi inadvertently reveal in a TV segment that she owns two industrial refrigerators, each reportedly worth $12,000.
“As soon as I saw that number, I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I could live on that,’” Army, a babysitter, says. While public displays of wealth have often elicited backlash, the coronavirus pandemic has changed the context almost overnight. A luxury kitchen appliance, Army says, “takes on a new tenor” when lines for food banks stretch for half a mile and the nonprofit hunger relief organization Feeding America estimates that an additional 17.1 million Americans may soon be struggling to eat.
The internet has provided many of us with a much-needed tether to other people and places in the midst of the pandemic, but social media is also playing another role: It has become a catalyst for anger as it exposes the growing chasm between the haves and have-nots. For every video call with a loved one, there’s accumulating evidence of unfairness as people in quarantine reveal their starkly different isolation experiences.
We Are Living in a Failed State
The virus should have united Americans against a common threat. With different leadership, it might have. Instead, even as it spread from blue to red areas, attitudes broke down along familiar partisan lines. The virus also should have been a great leveler. You don’t have to be in the military or in debt to be a target—you just have to be human. But from the start, its effects have been skewed by the inequality that we’ve tolerated for so long. When tests for the virus were almost impossible to find, the wealthy and connected—the model and reality-TV host Heidi Klum, the entire roster of the Brooklyn Nets, the president’s conservative allies—were somehow able to get tested, despite many showing no symptoms. The smattering of individual results did nothing to protect public health. Meanwhile, ordinary people with fevers and chills had to wait in long and possibly infectious lines, only to be turned away because they weren’t actually suffocating. An internet joke proposed that the only way to find out whether you had the virus was to sneeze in a rich person’s face.

Pharmacist Allegedly Refused To Fill Teen’s IUD-Related Prescription
Just before she was slated to get an IUD last summer, a teenage girl in New Mexico was prescribed three medications by her doctor: a pain-reliever, an anti-anxiety medication and Misoprotol, the generic name for a drug that is used to treat stomach ulcers, but sometimes used to prep the cervix before an IUD is placed, particularly in women who have never been pregnant. It is also one of the two medications that, taken together, make up what is commonly known as the “abortion pill.”
But when the girl’s mother went to her local Walgreens, only the prescriptions for the mild pain reliever and anti-anxiety medication had been filled. When she asked why, she was allegedly told that Misoprotol was in stock, but the pharmacist on duty would not fill it because of his “personal beliefs.”
A Mother Stabbed Her Son to Death Because He Was Gay
This is heartbreaking. According to Fox News, a mother in Brazil has admitted to hiring men to beat up her son and then later stabbed him to death. The reason? Simply for being gay.
On December 29, Tatiana Lozano Pereira lured her 17-year-old son Itaberli Lozano to their home. After kicking him out over a disagreement, Pereira pretended that she wanted to make peace with her son and welcomed him back home. Instead of a peace offering, she had hired two “thugs” waiting for him when he arrived; Pereira had hired them to beat him up and “teach him a lesson.”
After deciding this wasn’t enough, she ordered the two teenage boys to kill him. They refused, so she took the knife herself and stabbed her son to death.
With the help of her husband (the boy’s stepfather), they carried the body to a field near Highway José Fregonezi in Cravinhos and burned it. Lozano’s grandmother reported his disappearance and began to suspect the mother’s responsibility. Authorities discovered the teenager’s charred body on January 7.
Homeless man confesses to killing his older Bronx lover, planned to ‘fry the penis up and eat it’
A homeless man was indicted Tuesday for killing his Bronx lover, authorities said.
Court papers show that Jerry Pagan, 32, confessed in grisly detail to murdering 68-year-old Richard Reed.
He told detectives that, before authorities intervened, he had planned to eat his victim’s penis and chop his head off.“I stabbed him with a knife and hit him over the head with a hammer and cut off his penis and put it in the sink,” Pagan said to cops in a videotaped interview, the court papers show.
The accused killer added that he “was going to fry the penis up and eat it, too.”
Pagan — handcuffed and wearing an orange jail jumpsuit — appeared calm in Bronx Supreme Court Tuesday as he pleaded not guilty to murder and manslaughter charges.

Foster kids say couple ditched them after getting ‘Extreme Makeover’ digs
Bring back the bus!
A pair of foster kids who used to live with a North Carolina couple who were featured on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” claims their parents put on a show for the producers — and then kicked out all five of their adopted children once the cameras stopped rolling.
“What they did to us was just wrong,” explained Chris Friday, one of the youngsters who is now grown.
“[They] threw us all out,” he told WSOC Charlotte. “I know it was all about the money. From the first day, it was all about the money.”
In 2011, Devonda and James Friday, of Lincolnton, both made it on “Extreme Makeover” after producers learned of their seven kids and nonprofit organization called House of Hope.
Five of the children were adopted, including Chris and his biological sister Kamaya, who was 14 years old.
