Indiana School Board Member Says 'Cry Me a River' Over Trans Suicides
Activists in Evansville, Ind., caught a school board member on video appearing to dismiss their concerns about safety for LGBTQ kids.
This week, ten members of the Tri-State Alliance — a social service and educational organization serving LGBTQ communities in southeastern Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky — attended a board meeting of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County School Corporation to ask for greater protections for queer students.
After the meeting, the activists confronted school board members, according to posts on the group’s Facebook page.
The Tri-State Alliance says board member Ann Ennis claimed there was no support on the board for addressing suicide concerns among trans students.
On a video posted to the group’s Facebook page, Tri-State Alliance President Wally Paynter can be heard calling Ennis transphobic.

South Carolina school rejects 4th grader’s essay supporting LGBTQ rights
Elizabeth Foster, the principal of Anderson Mill Elementary School — a public school in the town of Moore, South Carolina (population 13,739) — reportedly rejected the inclusion of a 4th grade student’s essay promoting LGBTQ-acceptance from a book of student essays “on society.”
The principal believed the 10-year-old student’s essay would “make other parents upset … due to the type of school this is, the people that work here and the students and families of the students that go here,” creating an “undesirable situation at the school,” according to a lawsuit filed in federal court by the child’s parents.

Woman Held Captive for 10 Years in 'Basement of Horrors' Speaks Out: 'I Thought I Was Going to Die There'
A Pennsylvania woman who was held captive for 10 years in what has reportedly been described as a “basement of horrors” is sharing her story seven years after she was rescued.
“I thought I was going to die there,” Tamara Breeden told local TV station WCAU in an interview this week of her time imprisoned in the basement of a Philadelphia home where she and several other developmentally disabled adults were kept.
The group was eventually saved in 2011 and their captor, Linda Weston, along with three co-conspirators were sent to prison.
Breeden, now 36, told WCAU that in addition to being physically abused and kept in torturous conditions — without light, a bed or a bathroom — she and the others were forced to urinate in a bucket, wear clothes pulled from the trash and denied showers.

Thousands of people are seeking help after being forced into ‘ex-gay therapy’
In December 2014, a tractor-trailer traveling down Interstate 71 in Ohio struck and killed Leelah Alcorn.
Alcorn, who identified as transgender, had posted a suicide note on her Tumblr in which she described her isolation, desperation, and depression—feelings she blamed, in part, on the “conversion therapy” her conservative Christian parents forced her to undergo. Alcorn’s parents believed their “sick” child could be forcibly turned back into a boy and “cured” of her attraction to males.

CALIFORNIA DIOCESE RELEASES NAMES OF 34 CATHOLIC PRIESTS ACCUSED OF CHILD SEX ABUSE
California’s Diocese of San Bernardino this week released 34 names of the Catholic priests it says have had credible allegations of child sexual abuse made against them since 1978. On Twitter, the church said it was “an action of transparency intended to promote healing.”
Some of the alleged incidents described next to the priests’ names date back to the 1960s. Many of the men have been permanently banned from ministry in the diocese or are deceased. Some priests were arrested or suspended, while others were reported to the religious order.

Ex-cardinal accused of sex abuse living near Kansas school
The friary in remote western Kansas that is now home to a disgraced former U.S. cardinal removed from ministry by Pope Francis over allegations of sexual abuse is just one block from an elementary school.
The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., confirmed in a statement Friday that ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick is living at St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria, a rural town of about 1,200 that lies more than 250 miles (402 kilometers) west of Kansas City. The Friary is within a block of Victoria Elementary School.
News of McCarrick's living arrangement took school officials by surprise, the Kansas City Star reported .

Azealia Banks takes aim at Troye Sivan in series of Tweets
If you’re not with Azealia Banks 100%, you may as well be against her.
And hey, that’s her prerogative.
She doesn’t make it easy to back her all the time — we’ve covered her many beefs time and time again.
Now Australian pop star Troye Sivan finds himself fresh at the center of her displeasure yet again, after giving a wishy-washy answer to Andy Cohen about what he’d say to her if the two happened to be riding an elevator together.
To back it up, Sivan was asked in January if there are any rappers he’d be interested in working with.
He answered:
“I mean, I was a huge Azealia Banks fan. That all just kind of like went south a little bit. It’s just one of those annoying things where you just want to support [her] so bad, and it just doesn’t work out like that.”

BEN SHAPIRO: WHY IN THE NAME OF GOD IS THE MEDIA PROTECTING POPE FRANCIS? / OPINION
In 2003, The Boston Globe won a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on a massive sex abuse cover-up inside the Roman Catholic Church, led by the archdiocese of Boston. The Pulitzer board praised the newspaper’s “courageous, comprehensive coverage of sexual abuse by priests, an effort that pierced secrecy, stirred local, national and international reaction and produced changes in the Roman Catholic Church.” Hollywood made the Oscar-winning movie Spotlight about the effort.
In 2018, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, former Vatican ambassador to the United States, released an 11-page memo alleging that Pope Francis and other top members of the Vatican had reinstated Cardinal Theodore McCarrick to a public position despite credible allegations of sexual abuse of seminarians and minors. The memo rocked the Catholic Church; Pope Francis refused to comment; other sources came forward to back Vigano’s claims.
Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago made the near-unbelievable claim that Pope Francis shouldn’t comment, since he has “a bigger agenda. He’s got to get on with other things, of talking about the environment and protecting migrants and carrying on the work of the church. We’re not going to go down a rabbit hole on this.”
So, did the press leap to investigate Vigano’s claims? Did they demand answers from Pope Francis? Did we see the same type of courageous, comprehensive coverage of Francis’ activities that we saw from the Globe team circa 2003? Of course not.

Frontier Airlines Suspends Pilot Accused of Threatening Trans Girl
Since a group of parents declared it was “hunting season” on transgender people in response to news that a 12-year-old trans girl used the women’s bathroom at her school in Achille, Okla., the school shuttered its doors over the violent threats and her supporters held a silent demonstration. Now Frontier Airlines has suspended a pilot who allegedly threatened the young girl known only as Maddie, according to Oklahoma TV station KOCO.
The pilot was accused, along with several other adults, of threatening to do harm to Maddie simply for using the women’s restroom once when she couldn’t access the faculty bathroom, as she was told to do.
While the airline would not name the pilot involved with the incident, it released a statement confirming the pilot was suspended August 13 and condemning his actions.
