Everyone Really Hates Anti-Vaxxers and Keto

Okay, everybody, the Worst Wellness Trend of the 2010s Tournament has officially drawn to a close, with anti-vaxxing claiming the number one slot once and for all. To be honest, we're not totally surprised. Parents who choose not to vaccinate their kids are, after all, notorious for lifting rhetoric from the reproductive rights movement and pretty much completely responsible for the revival of once-dead diseases like measles. Wellness rocks!

To stop climate disaster, make ecocide an international crime. It's the only way

The science is clear: without drastic action to limit temperature rise below 1.5C, the Earth, and all life on it, including all human beings, will suffer devastating consequences.

Wilson No-kill dog shelter faces closure after repeated violations

"The inspection staff is trying to ensure the animals in a shelter facility are receiving humane care. Humane care is defined as the provision of adequate heat, ventilation, sanitary shelter and adequate food and water, consistent with the normal requirements and feeding habits of the animals, size, species and breed," the department's website states regarding these inspections.

Medieval Diseases Are Infecting California’s Homeless

Jennifer Millar keeps trash bags and hand sanitizer near her tent, and she regularly pours water mixed with hydrogen peroxide on the sidewalk nearby. Keeping herself and the patch of concrete she calls home clean is a top priority.

But this homeless encampment off a Hollywood freeway ramp is often littered with needles and trash and soaked in urine. Rats occasionally scamper through, and Millar fears the consequences.

Infectious diseases—some that ravaged populations in the Middle Ages—are resurging in California and around the country, and are hitting homeless populations especially hard.

Cruise ships still pose a health disaster threat

Montgomery was among the first to get ill. “I started feeling sick on March 9th, a week before it spread throughout the ship,” she said. “I kept telling my managers that I think we have COVID on board and they’re just giving people cough medicine and sending them back to work. They just thought I was being a dramatic woman.” (Requests for comment from Carnival have not been returned.)

Why Everyone Is So Rude Right Now

Of course, it’s the people-have-lost-their-everloving-minds incidents that make the news, but they are also a reflection of a deeper trend; Americans appear to have forgotten their manners, especially with those whose job it is to assist them. Lawyers are reporting ruder clients. Restaurants are reporting ruder clients. Flight attendants, for whom rude clients are no novelty, are reporting mayhem. (FAA fines for unruly behavior have already exceeded a million dollars this year.) So legion are the reports of discourtesy that some customer-facing businesses have been forced to play Miss Manners.

Children Cannot Parent Other Children

A fundamental truth about children is that they have needs they cannot themselves fulfill. They need people who acquire and prepare food for them, and people who look out for their safety and cleanliness. Beyond those material needs, they also need people who care for them emotionally, tending to them when they are sick and supporting them through tough times. Normally these duties fall to parents, but they can also fall to relatives, family friends, babysitters, teachers, or social workers. At the border, in detention centers, they are falling to other detained children, a harrowing detail in a sea of harrowing details now being reported.

Lawyers who visited a border station in Clint, Texas, this week told the Associated Press that during their visit, they encountered small children who had been taken from their parents under the Trump administration’s family-separation policy, some of them infants and toddlers, who are receiving little time or attention from adult caregivers or supervisors. Instead, some detained children receive affection and care—such as being held, rocked, bathed, fed, and even changed—only from other, slightly older detained children. As the AP reported Saturday:

People Are Furious After Dermatologist Tells Woman to Stop Wearing Sunscreen Because It’s ‘Too Greasy’

You would think that by now, the vote on whether or not to wear sunscreen would be just about unanimous. Research shows that SPF is a vital step in protecting against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause skin cancer and premature aging. So you can imagine that if a dermatologist told you that you could ditch the sunscreen, you might be a bit confused.

“Recently I went to a dermatologist for the 1st time and while discussing my skincare routine, he told me to not wear sunscreen because they're all too greasy and that Asians have a very low chance of getting skin cancer,” she wrote in her post.

These robots were built to be punched, stabbed and cursed. Here's why you might want to oblige them.

It’s no secret that technology can drive us batty. Between glitchy apps, social media outages and data breaches, the only thing stopping some people from smashing their personal tech is the exorbitant cost of replacing it.

Now a trio of researchers say they’ve found a way to use technology to channel our rage rather than provoke it. They’ve created robots designed not to perform tasks but to serve as our personal punching bags.

The research team, based at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, says the so-called “cathartic objects” are designed to be hit, stabbed, cursed and otherwise abused. The bots don’t complain or fight back, as seen in a video, but they do respond by flashing lights and flailing around.

Why should we take our anger out on robots? The researchers say it’s all about catharsis, the process by which people give full expression of their negative emotions as a way to curb them.

'Hundreds of bugs' in child's backpack leads to Florida mom's arrest

A Florida woman was arrested last week after her children's poor hygiene at school prompted a sheriff's office inquiry revealing living conditions unfit for children.

Jessica Stevenson, 33, of Milton, was arrested Friday and charged with child neglect without causing great bodily harm. Her bond was set at $12,500.

According to her arrest report, a staffer at Bagdad Elementary School reported on three siblings who attended the school to the Florida Department of Children and Families.

The employee said she’d noticed a second-grade student wearing the same clothing for an entire week in April and that the child’s body odor was hard to ignore, the report stated

The employee questioned the second-grader as to when their last bath had been, the report stated. The student replied they did not know.

Amputee who says United Airlines took his scooter battery takes battle to court

A 68-year-old man with amputations says a United Airlines employee left him crawling on the floor during a vacation after a security agent stopped him from taking his scooter’s batteries onto a flight.

Now, the Canadian man will ask a judge next week for the nation’s human rights commission to hear his case.

"Having to crawl across the floor in front of my wife is the most humiliating thing that I can think of," the man, Stearn Hodge, told the CBC, calling it “pathetic.”

Stearn told the network the incident occurred two years ago, in February 2017, when he and his wife arrived at Calgary International Airport for a flight to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Before boarding, a security agent asked Hodge to remove the $2,000 lithium battery needed to power his scooter, according to the CBC.

Hodge called for an agent from United Airlines, he said, noting the airline had approved the batteries in an earlier phone call. But the United employee agreed with the agent from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, the CBC reported.
