Danny Thomas Show, The (1953-1965)

There seems to be silence on the legacy of this classic sitcom. It started as Make Room For Daddy and mushroomed into The Danny Thomas Show. I saw all of the latter and only a handful of the other. The actress playing his wife, in the first half, had disdain for the man and it showed. Her composure did not scream nurturing, romantic or in love. Wrong place for the wrong actress. Danny played a version of himself. He was a singer/comedian who worked nightclubs. Jabbing at Danny's Lebanese culture was open, respectful and knowledgable. Lucy & Desi were his parents (friends) and Dick Van Dyke was his cousin (spin-off.) The show was blessed with energetic ideas, comic genius and non-stop showmanship. Danny must have learned how Lucy did it because he found his cute and sarcastic wit. Second wife was glamorous, vindictive, funny and hot. Marjorie Lord went shopping with Lucy Ricardo, cooked in fashion, got him in the mood and plotted her revenge in a very elegant and comical manner. The son is a scene stealer. Even when he made a mistake he diverted it with more funny. His adorability peaked in his tweens and crashed in his teens but he had a memorable run. Funny as fuck. The daughter was a prime teen that left before her character became unbearable. She had her moments. Louise was the household maid that was played by two elder pros. She got to hug white children, gossip with the wife, celebrate as a family member and sass the boss. A proud black woman. She isn't in all the episodes but the character remained til the end. The guest stars were numerous. The writers succeeded in incorporating them into strong storylines. The topics were basic, like feminism, how men can't do anything right, a woman can do anything men can do, a gift abolishes snarls and make-up sex is her way of accepting an apology. Penny from Lost In Space enters as a cute sister moppet that was supposed to bring adorability and sunshine. She was a work in progress. She laughs during line readings and when Mr. Thomas is doing his thing. She's cute and annoying. He was a great teacher, though. He hands a season to his working buddy and his domineering wife, played by the original Ursula from the Little Mermaid. It was an odd experiment giving supporting players full reign. They had to fill really big shoes and were no longer the sitcom air freshener. Ursula flopped around like she was getting paid to play charades on land. She was a bit too much. Danny was a ham. He sang in almost every episode. He shoved it down our throats but was so adamant and easy going that we learned to accept it and stopped praying that he didn't sing in the next episode. They had minorities galore and a successful run from the 50s through the 60s. Well-written, comical, consistent and timeless. One of a kind. Why don't we ever celebrate it? 06-Jun-2023
I've Got A Secret (1952-1967)

You know you are hooked on greatness when the picture looks crappy but the content is gold. 23-Mar-2022
RuPaul's Drag Race (2009-)

I'm sorry not being able to support or partake of what I hear is a stunning season but we don't get your channel in the pit, not even in the gay one. Regards. See you on a lesser channel, at a different time. 14-Apr-2020
I appreciate the learning but the training has to go with it. 15-May-2019
Heartbreaking sweetness (Ms. Davenport.) I'd take your footage. No, I wouldn't. Maybe. 15-Mar-2019
Gorgeous pretense. Exactly what I needed. 13-Mar-2019

Reunion. It was about gay pride...the real one. 22-Jun-2018
The girls brought me happiness. 18-Jun-2018
The highlight was watching Ru bring adorableness to her drag. 26-May-2018
Good taste in body parts, great camaraderie between the girls and the showdown was built for the audience to stand as the girls bow. 22-May-2018
It was everything the last all-stars forgot this show was about. 27-Apr-2018
Ru was art deco doll, the girls brought fire and fantastical whimsy to drag and an integrated roster of pretty boy. Christina flashed her gay badge which warranted hope for an artistic comeback that only a supreme deserves. I'm excited. 23-Mar-2018
RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars (2012 -2018)
In a season where Ru gave the all-stars every opportunity to strut, they repaid the legend by teetering. Shangela's hilarious lip synch catapulted the show to greatness and the girls finally gave us some soul searching but the next group needs to singe to continue mama's legacy.
The ladies seem in dire need of art inspiration. SNL history has a roster of the most empowering females to celebrate and emulate. Just the thought of them and the characters they slayed should elicit a laugh. 10-Mar-2018
The battle was worth saluting. 24-Jun-2017
Snatch Game is allowing us to ponder. Do the girls not emulate our current divas because there is no access or because such legends are not calling out to them? That's not fun. Our divas need to cause more of a ruckus. 29-Apr-2017
My original review has been changed to reflect that in fun you can disrespect a group and commit error with one unfortunate word. 29-Mar-2017
Reunion. Thank you. 03-Nov-2016
I was a little dismayed how little spectacle and celebration was involved in crowning this year's All-Star. It seemed rushed and gagged of money. Couldn't a club donate their space to the great Ru-Paul and allow her ladies to shine in the atmosphere that bore them? The lift to either cause wouldn't hurt and it would delight us. 14-Oct-2016
Congratulations Ru, you are still Queen of your domain. I met you once as you towered on a float in a NY Pride Parade. My buddy and I followed your float to the tip end of Christoper Street before a turn to disembark and traffic halted and locked you in place. You blessed everyone with a most rousing lip synch and array of dance work. During the storm you created you acknowledged and waved and I welcomed the rain that created a rainbow for the rest of my pride fest. You defined a moment that was never topped. Class act.
The reason this show excels when other realities mimic is because the show and the pretense is in their drag. Drag is in the background of every gay man whether you care to acknowledge it or not. Every contour, shading and hardware is depicting the hardships and the joys our lifestyle can drop. They enact it in exaggeration and a softer guise so the hurt doesn't cut so deep and the joy is longstanding. After much schooling and thought, I respectfully acknowledge that they are more than an accessory, they shine brighter, work harder and fight butchier.
All-stars entertainment value is never in question because even when things are not progressing how we'd prefer you don't stop brandishing or humanizing yourselves.
I was gunning for Alyssa to win because of her insuppressible showmanship, vulnerable heartbreak and cuntilicious coating. Whoever wins the crown, Alyssa can be assured that she won something more palpable, our hearts.
If Ru wanted to create a gasm she'd bring back all her girls and eliminate them one by one along the time allotted as she would have seen fit. Just curious to know what her choices would have been. 07-Oct-2016
Barbra: The Music, The Mem'ries...The Magic (2017)

When legends disappoint it has the ability to obliterate the gifts the talent birthed. Barbra calculates that her audience may arise to such a conclusion as she struts the stage, strings along memories and fidgets classic standards.
Around fifteen minutes in... she anchors, concentrates and overwhelms us with the last breadth of a great stylist, the isms of a superstar and a flash of beautiful recollection. I miss her already. 29-Nov-2017
