NYC Closing Out Its Bloodiest Year in Nearly a Decade as Killings Spike Amid Pandemic, Unrest

Heralded as the safest big city in America in recent years, New York City is closing out its bloodiest year in nearly a decade, grappling with a surge in homicides and a pandemic authorities say has helped fuel violence.

The city had recorded 447 killings as of Tuesday, a 41% increase over last year and the largest number since 2011. The number of people shot has more than doubled last year’s total, nearing a 14-year high.

Among the victims: a 1-year-old boy sitting in his stroller at a summer cookout; a 53-year-old teacher walking his dog; and a 43-year-old mother looking out the window of her child’s third-floor bedroom. All three were killed by stray bullets.

Hillsong Church Faces New Allegations of Abusive Behavior

Leadership for the megachurch Hillsong was responsible for the “abuse of volunteers and real, amazing people,” according to a new New York Post report. Nicole Herman told the tabloid that in her experience founding Hillsong L.A. in 2013, she was beneath the senior pastors but “did everything.”

According to the Post, Herman put out a call on Instagram on Saturday to hear from “a million other amazing people who left this cult,” telling the outlet that her inbox has since been flooded. Yolandi Bosch told the tabloid that she attended Hillsong College in Australia after a representative for the school convinced her to give up a career in film and move there from South Africa—and asked her to sign a non-disclosure agreement saying that she wouldn’t speak about her experiences at the college without approval.

Bosch didn’t sign the NDA. She told the Post that the church required a pastor’s permission to date and that her behavior was monitored by fellow students at the request of school administration. “It felt like a reality show—it’s really a cult,” Bosch said.

Elderly woman dies after being smacked for not social distancing: sources

An 86-year-old woman awaiting treatment for bowel blockage at a Brooklyn hospital yesterday died after being punched by a fellow patient — for not engaging in “social distancing” amid the coronavirus, law-enforcement sources told The Post on Sunday.

The death of Janie Marshall of Williamsburg appeared to be the first potential crime in the city sparked by fears over the deadly contagion.

Marshall was in the Emergency Room at the city-run Woodhull Medical Center when she was smacked in the face by a 32-year-old patient, who was awaiting psychiatric treatment and got out of her nearby bed to launch the unprovoked attack, sources said.

Marshall was knocked off her feet and cracked her head on the floor shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, sources said.

My Mother Tried to Stab My Queer Lover With a Steak Knife

My mother tried to stab Magdalena with a steak knife. There, I said it.

For years I’ve wondered if I might have imagined the moment when my mother picked up the knife she’d been using to saw through a not-quite-defrosted Entenmanns’ coffee cake and attempted to plunge it into the flesh of my good friend and occasional lover Magdalena.

People Think It's an Interesting Coincidence That Stephen Hawking Died on Pi Day

Some people on the internet think Stephen Hawking couldn’t have calculated a better day to die.

The 76-year-old theoretical physicist, one of science’s most famous luminaries died on March 14, also known as National Pi Day — an annual day for scientists and mathematicians around the world to celebrate the value of pi that even includes deals on pizzas and actual pies. Suffice it to say that the noteworthy coincidence was not lost on the internet.

Why don’t we talk about the choice to not have children? One filmmaker thinks she has the answer.

The decision to not have children has long been a taboo subject in our society — but Maxine Trump thinks it’s time for us to embrace the conversation.

“If you imagine going to a bar and somebody is saying to you pretty directly, ‘Are you gonna have kids,’ it’s quite an intimate question, and how do you answer that?” she said.

Trump, a documentary filmmaker (with no relation to the first family), told Mic it used to embarrass her to talk about the fact that she had no desire to have children. But that all changed as she filmed her latest movie, To Kid or Not to Kid, a documentary that dispels some of society’s most toxic myths about women who choose not to be mothers.
