Don't vote for our 'homophobic' and 'racist' dad, Missouri candidate's kids tell voters
While most political candidates can count on the unwavering support of their family members, two of the three children of Missouri Republican Steve West have a message for voters in the state’s 15th House District: Don’t vote for our dad.
“I can’t imagine him being in any level of government,” Steve West’s daughter Emily told The Kansas City Star. “He’s made multiple comments that are racist and homophobic and how he doesn’t like the Jews.”
Steve West’s son, Andy, contacted the paper on Tuesday with a similar message about his “fanatic” father.
The facts about Republicans’ hysteria over brown people
President Donald Trump tweeted a new ad that is almost too racist to believe on Wednesday.
The ad from Trump’s campaign, which accuses Democrats of allowing Mexicans and Central Americans to murder Americans, is the latest escalation in Republicans’ very obvious attempts to stoke fear about brown people and distract from unpopular conservative policies. The president’s party is widely expected to lose control of one chamber of Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
While smearing immigrants is a time-honored tradition for many on the right, the president’s efforts to make a major campaign issue out of a migrant caravan traveling north from Central America (and currently 1,000 miles away from the U.S. border) has been echoed by prominent Republicans, Fox News, and numerous other propagandists in conservative media.
But don’t just take our word for it. Let’s dig into the data to show why Republicans’ recent cherry-picking has no basis in reality.

This Is What Happens to Your Body if You Eat Almost No Carbs
In many ways, refined carbohydrates—bread, pasta, white rice—are like fossil fuels. They contain a lot of energy, they’re cheap to produce, and just when it seems as though supply can't keep up with demand, some technological innovation enables us to extract and produce more of them. And like fossil fuels, the scientific consensus is that an over reliance on refined carbohydrates is going to end badly.
Most people who are interested in cutting carbs out are doing so to lose weight. Anecdotal and scientific research suggests that it’s a pretty good strategy to take to drop some pounds. But carbs aren’t just in the types of food I mentioned above. They’re also hiding out in fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, milk, legumes, and plenty else. With that being the case, you can imagine that cutting your carb intake to virtually nothing would be very difficult indeed and—as you'll read in a moment—there’s research suggesting that it’s potentially dangerous. Here are some of the things that would happen if you ditched refined carbs, limited the “good” (or complex) carbs named above and opted to consume butter, bacon, and bourbon to your heart’s content.
Culture, Not PrEP, Linked with Nationwide Rise of STIs in Gay/Bi Men
A new study from UCLA's Williams Institute may have found a new reason why STI's are on the rise among gay and bisexual men in the United States.
While some hypothesized that the STI rise could be linked to the use of PrEP, the drug for preventive HIV treatment, the report shows that's not the case.
"Our data don’t support the idea that we can attribute the rise in STIs to PrEP use, at least not in a direct manner. I personally don’t think that’s what’s happening," Professor Phillip Hammack, the study’s lead author, told Los Angeles Blade. Hammack believes there is a “culture shift about sex.”

YouTube is driving people to white nationalists like Richard Spencer, report finds
YouTube’s business model is powering a network of far-right accounts, by channeling large audiences from mainstream conservative and funneling them to radical white nationalists, according to a new report published Tuesday.
The report by the Data & Society Research Institute, an independent nonprofit, contends that YouTube not only allows the spread of its more extreme content, but actively encourages it.

Mormon fighting to end youth interviews ousted from faith
A Mormon man who led a campaign criticizing the church's practice of allowing closed-door, one-on-one interviews of youth by lay leaders that sometimes included sexual questions has been kicked out of the faith following a disciplinary hearing.
Sam Young read a verdict letter for the first time Sunday that had been delivered to him following last week's hearing with local church leaders in Houston.
Young and his supporters say the interviews where youth are asked if they're following the law of chastity led to inappropriate conversations and shaming.

The Horrific Catholic Church Sex Abuse Scandal Is About to Get a Lot Worse
VICE: After the bombshell report out of Pennsylvania, the attorney general in Missouri announced that he would launch a similar investigation, and the Archdiocese of St. Louis, for one, pledged its complete cooperation. Then, the attorneys general in New York and New Jersey launched similar investigations. Is this something new that we’re seeing—the multiple intensive investigations and the apparent cooperation of the dioceses?
John C. Manly: The scandal has had a few evolutions. The first one was really Gilbert Gauthe, in the late 80s. He was a priest in Louisiana who molested dozens and dozens of children. That was basically the first exposure. And then there was the [Joseph] Bernardin exposure in '92. And then the [Rudolph] Kos case in Dallas—there was a huge verdict. And then the Stockton verdict on [Oliver] O'Grady in '97, which got a whole bunch of press. And [Ryan] DiMaria, my client, a victim who won a huge settlement, $5.2 million, in the early 2000s. And then, of course, Boston, in 2001 and 2002. That spawned Los Angeles, and there was also a tremendous amount of press about Cardinal Roger Mahony.

Troye Sivan: 'Ex-Gay' Camps Tell Kids They 'Have a God-Shaped Hole'
Learning about the harmful messages of conversion therapy for the film Boy Erased led gay musician and actor Troye Sivan to imagine the effect on vulnerable young people, he said Thursday night on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
"When we arrived on set day one, they gave us the resources kids would typically get when they arrived at the [conversion therapy] camp, like actual printed-out resources," Sivan told Colbert. These packets outlined the strict rules LGBTQ youths are given at the camps, including limited body contact as well as a mandatory dress code that required girls to carry purses and wear skirts while forbidding boys to wear tight-fitting garments.

Barack Obama is done holding back.
The former president unloaded on President Trump — by name — and Republicans in Congress during a blistering speech at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on Friday, urging students in the audience to vote in an election he called a turning point.
“It did not start with Donald Trump,” Obama said. “He is a symptom, not the cause.” But he went on to criticize Trump and Republicans in Congress at length, calling out coziness with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Trump’s tweets about the Justice Department investigating Republicans, the president’s reluctance to criticize Nazi sympathizers after the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and more.
“Republicans who know better in Congress — and they’re there, they’re quoted saying, Yeah, we know this is kind of crazy — are still bending over backward to shield this behavior from scrutiny or accountability,” he said.
A rush transcript of Obama’s remarks is below...
California’s housing crisis is so bad people are living in cars
There is a shortage of affordable housing in every state in the country, but it's especially bad in California, where more and more people are discovering the only place they can afford to live is inside a car.
There's only one affordable housing unit for every five extremely low-income households in the state, and the gap isn't just pushing more and more people out onto the streets — it's also creating a new, fast-growing, and hidden class of homelessness.

Few would likely debate the findings of a new study from China and California looking closely at a link between loneliness, depression and high-risk sexual behavior.
The findings show a strong link between men having sex with men facing depression and loneliness and risk-taking among those who are HIV negative.
