In any other year, a glittering homecoming dance in McDonough, Georgia, wouldn’t be controversial.
But during the raging coronavirus pandemic, from which at least 257,072 Americans have died, Ola High School had no plans to host a mass gathering of singing and sweating teenagers. So parents in the town about 35 miles south of Atlanta did it themselves, with few precautions, on Nov. 14.
“It’s my daughter’s senior year, so I hosted a dance,” one parent, Beth Knight, told The Daily Beast over Facebook messenger. “It was terrific.”
“We sold over 300 tickets, but only about 250 kids actually showed up because they were warned by teachers and coaches that they should not attend because of the virus,” Knight added. “The kids who came had fun.”

Millions of Americans are carrying on with their travel plans ahead of Thanksgiving weekend despite the CDC's urgent warnings to stay home as the number of daily cases and hospitalizations in the country continue to hit record highs.
Confirmed cases in the U.S. for the disease topped 12 million on Saturday as more than 193,000 new infections were recorded in the US on Friday. This broke the previous record for the largest single-day spike on Thursday - and over 82,000 patients are now hospitalized across the country.
Daily deaths also skyrocketed to 2,015, the highest number of fatalities per day since May during the initial peak of the virus, according to health data from Johns Hopkins University.
The alarming surge shows the nation is facing a second wave of the coronavirus this winter that could be more dangerous and widespread than the initial outbreak earlier this year.
'When you look at what's happening now, the rate of rise is dramatically different,' White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator, Dr Deborah Birx told CNN. 'This is faster. It's broader. And what worries me, it could be longer.'
It has also sparked fears among health experts that Thanksgiving travel and holiday gatherings next week will only fuel the spread of the virus and prolong the length of the pandemic.

Homicides skyrocket across U.S. during pandemic, while robberies and rapes plummet
In Greensboro, N.C., the violence has gotten so extreme that a shootout erupted in front of the county courthouse the other day, across the street from the sheriff’s office, leaving a 20-year-old man dead. Greensboro set a city record with 45 homicides last year, and, as of Friday, already had 54 this year.
“We’ve always had a level of gang activity,” Greensboro Police Chief Brian James said in an interview, “but it’s more prolific now. I’m not sure what’s changed, but the offenders are more bold than they’ve ever been.”
Some police commanders say the twin impacts of the coronavirus and civil uprisings against police violence caused them to redirect their officers away from proactive anti-crime programs, whether due to virus-related budget cuts or strategic redeployment of forces to handle the unrest. Other officials point to job loss and other stresses of the pandemic as fueling tension and leading to violence. And with many schools shuttered, police say, many areas have seen a rise in violence involving juveniles.
“We haven’t seen numbers like this since the ’90s,” said PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler. “We’ve had 20 years of steady declines in crime. Is this just an aberration, or does this portend something for the future? This has been under the radar because of the pandemic, but something’s happening across the country in the most serious crimes. Cash-strapped renters nationwide say their landlords tried to skirt COVID-19 eviction moratoriums by changing locks, removing trash containers so waste piled up and – in one case – attempting to unbolt the front door right off an apartment.
They told state attorneys general that they were kicked out of their homes after landlords accused them of violating tenant rules, like smoking cigarettes inside their units or failing to take the hitches off of their mobile homes.
Like Heidi Stach, who lost her job due to the pandemic and fell behind on rent, they assumed they were protected. But Stach says her landlord found an end-run to Wisconsin’s eviction ban: Instead of starting a court process, he sent her a notice to vacate this summer because he was not renewing her lease.

Gay and bi men in the US had an average of 2.3 more sexual partners at the height of the first wave of the COVID pandemic.
Meanwhile the men reported sharp rises in their levels of binge drinking and drug use.
That’s according to a study by the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities, University of Michigan in the USA. The authors published the study in the AIDS and Behavior journal.
They found only half the men recognized that you could get coronavirus through having sex. But 64% didn’t think they needed to reduce the number of sexual partners.
In fact, most men recognized that kissing is the highest risk for passing on COVID-19 and knew anal sex is comparatively safer.
He noted that while 94% recognized you could pass on the virus through kissing, half believed you couldn’t pass it on through anal sex.
He concluded: ‘If half the gay men in this study were any stupider we’d have to water them once a week.

SNL executive producer and creator Lorne Michaels was known for employing several of young female assistants — who the Saturday Night Live cast members called the “Lornettes.” And eventually, he married one of them.
A New York Magazine profile on SNL from a seemingly ancient era of the sketch series — the mid-’90s — painted a fascinating picture of the show’s working environment, dictated mainly by how Michaels operated as Saturday Night Live’s executive producer.
Apparently, in every entryway in Michaels’ office area, “a blond wicker basket of warm kernels precedes him, usually delivered by one of several blonde female assistants in their early twenties.”
These assistants of Michaels were so pervasive — and identical — that other SNL staffers had a unique name for them.
“Cast members call these high-strung women the Lornettes,” the magazine reported.

Among crimes related to victims’ sexual orientation and gender identity, a majority of the cases were antigay, followed by antifemale and antitransgender.
