Majority of LGBTQ people report being sexually harassed in the workplace

A report published yesterday (May 17) on International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia revealed that the majority of LGBTQ people in the workplace have been sexually harassed.

The report surveyed 1,000 LGBTQ respondents and 68% said they had faced one type of sexual harassment at work. A lot of these were inappropriate jokes and probing questions about their sex lives.

35% of LGBTQ women reported having experienced unwanted touching, and a further 21% reported some form of sexual assault. A further 12% said they had been either seriously sexually assaulted or raped at work. When compared to men, only 7% reported having been seriously sexually assaulted or raped.

These figures increased significantly when it came to black or minority ethnic women. Out of these, 54% experienced unwanted touching, 45% reported having been sexually assaulted, and a further 27% reported either serious sexual assault or rape.

Here's exactly how restricting abortion harms public health

This week, Alabama’s governor signed the most extreme anti-abortion bill in the country, effectively banning the procedure. It’s just one of a host of new laws restricting abortion: including one by the Missouri senate which passed a bill banning abortion after eight weeks, and one signed by the governor of Georgia banning abortion after six weeks, before most people would know that they’re pregnant.

Even though they’ve been signed by the governors, the Alabama and Georgia laws are not yet in effect—people can still get legal abortions in these states. And there is still a constitutional right to abortion in the United States. However, access to safe abortion varies widely across the country: Some states have laws that restrict the number of clinics that can provide abortion services, for example, or require people to wait a certain amount of time between a counseling appointment and the procedure, which is medically unnecessary. As these laws are challenged and the abortion conversation continues, it’s important to recognize that restricting abortion can have significant repercussions for people who can become pregnant.

A Look At The Staggering Sexual Harassment Numbers In The Legal Profession

A new international survey reveals that sexual harassment in the legal profession is truly at epidemic proportions. The survey, with almost 7,000 respondents, was conducted by the International Bar Association and market research company Acritas and asked both lawyers and nonlawyers in the legal profession from 135 countries questions about sexual harassment and bullying within the industry. The results are disheartening, to say the least.

Over a third of women — 36.6 percent of women and 7.4 percent of men — say they’ve been victims of sexual harassment. When in comes to bullying nearly 1 in 2 women say they’ve been a target, compared with 1 in 3 men who say the same.

Colorado police officer who pulled gun on black man picking up trash quits force

A white Colorado police officer caught on video pulling a gun on a black man who was picking up trash outside his home has resigned, officials said Thursday.

Boulder Police Officer John Smyly quit the police force after an investigation found he violated department policy when he drew his gun and attempted to detain 26-year-old Zayd Atkinson in March, according to officials and a police department internal affairs report.

"While the finding likely would have resulted in suspension or possibly termination, Officer Smyly resigned prior to the conclusion of the disciplinary process," a statement released by the City of Boulder on Thursday reads.

A police internal affairs report obtained by ABC News shows Smyly's decision to attempt to detain Atkinson "was not supported by reasonable suspicion that Mr. Atkinson was committing, had committed, or was about to commit a crime."

Kicked out, spat on and abused, new UK shelter helps LGBT+ homeless

LONDON, May 15 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Apart from being spat on and urinated on when he slept rough in London for over a year, 52-year-old Chabahn had to contend with another daily threat: being abused and attacked for his sexuality.

Chabahn, who is gay but kept it hidden on the streets, said living with HIV was an additional burden that some mainstream shelters did not have the capacity to support him with.

"When it comes to being LGBT, the amount of discrimination on the street is rather high. There is no safety, you have to fend for yourself," said Chabahn, who declined to give his full name.

"You have to become a very good actor and you have to be someone that you are not."

Homophobes Attack Congressional Black Caucus Over Equality Act

A right-wing group aims to spark outrage among black voters over an impending vote on the Equality Act.

Organizers for the Gone 2 Far Movement released an open letter through Christian Newswire attacking leadership from the Congressional Black Caucus.

The bizarre rant, signed by failed Congressional candidate Stephen Broden and right-wing radio host Randy Short, suggests the “Gay Equality Act” will set back minority rights.

The letter singles out Rep. Karen Bass, CBC chair, and other caucus members for refusing to “defend the real purpose of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as a scam to make 'Gay the New Black' wherein pedophiles, sodomites of all stripes, and persons of debased fetish needs are accorded protected class status akin to Blacks and women.”

The letter compares a vote for the Equality Act to the biblical story of disciple Judas Iscariot betraying Jesus Christ, though its unclear how many pieces of silver were exchanged or who will be crucified should the legislation pass.

‘Let’s go, keg stand!’: Fraternity under investigation after forcing puppy to drink beer

The small caramel-colored dog with floppy ears stands on a table and wags its tail. Then, a voice commands, “Go.”

In one swift movement, the man gripping the dog by its midsection lifts it up and turns it upside down over a silver keg.

“Let’s go, keg stand!” someone bellows as another man holds a black tap near the dog’s mouth. The now-squirming canine kicks its paws in the air. Suddenly, a stream of foamy liquid squirts from the tap, hitting the dog in its face.

A grinning bystander doubles over and covers his mouth. Someone else lets out a loud peal of laughter.

But the incident, which was captured on video and shared to social media over the weekend, wasn’t funny to the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or to Hofstra University administrators.

LGBTI incels: what it's like to be queer when no one will sleep with you

What is it like when no one will have sex with you? Months and years go by with no success on dating apps. Facing a sea of ‘no’s at bars and parties.

What does that do to a person?

The answer is complicated if you’re a sexual person. For some, it’s just a part of everyday life.

For incels, it is everything.

The involuntary celibate community spawned on the internet two decades ago. It is as multi-faceted as it is confusing to outsiders – boasting their own belief system and vocabulary.

But where do LGBTI people fall within the incel community? Mirroring ‘normie’ society, many incels reject LGBTI folk. Yet that hasn’t stopped them from existing. Instead they’ve created their own group – and a unique way of being incel.

Watch this woman suddenly demean & spit on a gay man as he tries to ride the subway

A bystander on the Jubilee line of the London Underground caught a homophobic attack on film as one rider used anti-gay slurs and spit on another passenger.

The video of the apparently intoxicated woman, originally reported by the Daily Mail, was provided by an unnamed onlooker who said that the attack was unprovoked..

The short clip shows the woman shouting at a passenger while several other riders look on.

At the beginning of the clip, she tells the man, “because you’re gay I’m gonna be like, ‘nah, he’s gay, just let him go?’ No! Because you’re gay, even more, I’m going to violate you.”

Sexual health campaign that’s ‘unapologetic, black and gay’ hits London

Phil Samba is ‘unapologetic and black and gay’ and he has inspired other gay, black men to take better care of their sexual health.

For the past two years Samba has co-developed and starred in a unique campaign to make sure London’s gay, black men are not only more educated about sexual health, but also more comfortable in getting tested.

‘Some black communities consider being gay a white thing so black men are erased,’ Samba tells Gay Star News.

‘Seeing themselves (in campaigns) will make them more comfortable and see that they need to take care of themselves.’

Most Jamaicans want to keep same-sex activity illegal

New research has showed most Jamaicans want to still keep the ban on gay sex.

LGBTI organisation, the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG), commissioned the research.

It found between seven and 30% of the population identified as LGBTI. The research also found that 97% of people had very little understanding of trans people and trans issues.

‘Over the last couple of years, we have seen some improvement in the situation where LGBT people are concerned. I think there is respect and tolerance for the community, but we are still a very far way from where we need to go,’ J-Flag’s executive director, Jaevion Nelson told a Gleaner forum.

Nelson said bullying and discrimination was still a huge issue for LGBTI people. But he felt heartened by findings that 68% of employers and 88% of politicians would report violence against LGBTIs. But only 34% of the general public would do so.

Gay couple film themselves being turned away from restaurant in Mexico

A gay couple in Mexico captured footage of a restaurant owner refusing them service.

Rubén Veliz, 29, and Edwin Contreras, 27, had gone to dine at Pozole Y Tacos (#1200-B Coloniza Colinas de San Jerónimo), Monterrey, Nuevo León, at around 5pm on Sunday (28 April). Veliz tells Gay Star News he has visited the establishment several times previously.

However, on this occasion, on seeing the men holding hands, the restaurant’s owner refused to serve them.

He allegedly screamed at them over holding hands, calling it ‘bullshit’, and insisting he had every right to refuse service.
